6:46 is a Hearnshaw Bros, you missed the H. Nice chisels, I'm a hopeless collector of old edgetools myself :)) Never miss a fleamarket...

Sorby confuses me. There seems to be about three different companies with Sorby in their name, but with different forenames and then one is in partnership with Taylor I think it is. Which is is the better one please? I got a couple of Marples morticing chisels, Sharp as anything and I kept the larger one to one side until I learnt to sharpen as good as that. Nearly there now I’ve stopped using a guide, but not quite. They were only a couple of pounds from an 'antique' bric-a-brac place at Ironbridge, also got my first brace and bits there. It was less than £10 for the lot. Great video, thank you and subscribed

That first brand of chisel you showed in the series of pictures is an Alexander Mathieson and sons from Glasgow, Saracen lane toolworks, established is 1822 I think? If your tool is stamped "mathiesons Glasgow" rather than "mathieson and sons" it was made before 1856.

Hmm, yes tool hoarding is a real risk, a disease really, like collecting. But good to see old tools brought back to use rather than chucked or scrapped. Many are sent out to Africa by charities these days.

I'm so envious of you in the US and UK. In india, you can't get half decent chisels to begin with. You can go for soba chisels, which are top of the line here, and hold a brilliant edge no doubt, but they can be a bit pricey when you adjust for standard of living. This poor quality inevitably reflects on the work. The ones you do get are actually decent steel, but the milling is abysmal and they don't come with a handle, let alone an edge. I just spent 15 minutes at the bench grinder trying to set a radius on a 3/4" beveled chisel. Hopefully, my skills will eventually justify the investment in better chisels.
