Thank you for this video. As with all your videos it was very informative. If possible could you make a video on the basics of using the hand tools. I am setting up my workshop as one of my arms is damaged I need to relearn alot of skills. O know my knowledge of using various axes, adez and handsaws is shakey to say the least. Woodwork is going to be both rehab and relaxation for me. Whilst I won't be able to avoid some power tools it is my aim to minimise them. Thank you again. Catherine, UK

I must really like your methods because I've watched this video a few times now. I particularly like how round you are able to get the handles without a lathe. You say patience, I say skill. I could spend a week on just a handle and I doubt it would ever be that round. The finished chisel looks fantastic! Heirloom quality look. If I could thumb up again, I totally would!

InformationIsTheEdge I make mine with a Barlow pocket knife and sand paper. Great for new screwdriver handles too. I often buy old Stanley screwdrivers and reshape the handle to an oval egg shape which really gives super grip in your hand. I hate Philip screwdrivers as they wear out. A blade type can always be restored.
@InformationIsTheEdge7 жыл бұрын
+James Lucas I have a few older wooden handle screwdrivers but I think they were factory made that way. Props to you for being able to carve handles with a pocket knife! I might be able to do it but it would look like crap. Its why I got a lathe.

Here in our country Philippines, most of wood carpenters specialist we are using this type of chisels and the kinds of handled is like this in your illustration. I am a wood carpenters specialist for more than 30 years, the same chisels I used, but only for the quenching methods and techniques we have a different cause we were using the old fashioned and tradition of quenching methods through fire soap and water. This could be done by a good blacksmith who's expertise by quenching methods and technique of bevels edge and sharp of chisels it will prolong when you use it at work and the results is more tested.

@6:18 that's some beautiful grain! By the way, are you a user of LumberJocks? They do all the sorts of things you're doing... a guy from there generously gave me his chisels to clean up, unfortunately they came with handles so it'd be a bit unnecessary making new wood ones for them.

I have made great handles requiring no Farrell for a binding stop at the top of the chisel by using Dogwood or elm. Even after using for years, there is no flare out of the end by striking. A rounded end is far more ergonomically correct as it transfers the thrust far better. Check out your claw hammer. That is why they are never a squared edge. Regarding epoxy ! Never use epoxy to fasten the socket. A proper wedged handle requires none. It will never fall out pull out or bounce out. However, it will very easily come out by tapping it lightly on the side by tapping it on the bench or other surface. Refer to Morse tapers. They are all that it used in machinery such as lathes and mills. They come in different sizes and hold extremely well. A drift pin is common to remove them.
