Mario Maker 2 has been incredibly addicting since its release. I've been hooked on creating my own stages and learning new ways to utilize the plethora of tools at our disposal. Let's talk about how this sequel upped the ante in terms of teaching and encouraged better game design in its creators.

I think the best thing about the game is just how much they push fairness when creating courses. In so many of the tutorial lessons in the dojo, they repeatedly bash you over the head with making stages that are fair first, difficult later. Feels like they recognised how much people get sick of seeing insane troll levels and, without just outright not allowing them to be made, communicated the idea of making levels fairly and how that can still be fun for people to play and make.

troll levels are still a popular level type tho, it’s just to prevent hot garbage levels like those that start you off with a giant thwomp on your head

The boo feature is a good idea and all but it can also really screw over perfectly talented course makers. All it takes is for the first few people playing your levels to be complete Neanderthals that exit your stage as soon as they fail even once and give your stage a Boo and nobody's going to play your stage after that. Not unless you go around shoving your course ID in everyone's faces and even that's not a guarantee. I don't know how I can make my courses any easier without being patronizing and yet most people can't complete any of the courses I publish.

Another reason that the levels are WAY better because unlike SMM1 where levels IMMEDIATELY get thrown into the level pool upon upload, SMM2 levels enter a New Courses section where they can have a chance to enter the level pool by getting a like and being played. New Courses courses don't appear in the Endless Challenge.

The only problems I have with Mario Maker 2 is that some of the clear condition in Story Mode are not available in the course maker and the multiplayer is still laggy. I know Nintendo said they were going to add Friends Online but the game has been out for a month and we still don't have it yet. Regardless I enjoy this game. My favorite part is playing different levels because I see what people create and it gives me a reason to keep coming back and playing different levels. Its way better than it was in Mario Maker 1.

Don't know why, I watch people play and they get good level after good level and it looks like a lot of fun, then I hop into endless mode and it's an unending marathon of levels designed under the principle of "If I force the player to die unavoidably a bunch of times, it'll make my level's difficulty rating higher".

What I hate though it that making really really difficult levels seem to be viewed as the pinnacle of design. It's not. Anyone can make a really really difficult level. "Hey, let's just take level 1-1 and add a shit load of firespinner everywhere." That is BAD level design. But it's stupid hard, so people think it's good. It's so sad. People lose track of the fun. I really really like mm2 but I also get really frustrated with some additions Like, so many of the additions are interactive and versatile, but the angry sun/moon is so, the opposite of that. It does one thing and that's it, and you can only have one per subworld! Plus, you can't put a sun in nighttime or a moon in daytime. On that point, the way mechanics are forcibly tied to day/night is really bad if I'm honest. Like, it's cute when you see it the first time, but eventually you just start to get frustrated. "I'd like to make this ground level at night" - you can do it but now you're not allowed to place 1-up mushrooms, goombas float in the air, and thwomps chase you "I want to make a sandstorm" - ok but only at night, you fool, you absolute moron "This stage uses the castle aesthetic but I want it to be night-time" - swim time! Did you not want swim time? Too bad, swim time! "can I place the poison mushroom?" - Are you in the ground night-time theme? - "no" - Then how dare you "Ok so I like the look of night-time but I want the music to stay the same" - *knowing smirk* It's just a really bad implementation of some really good ideas. I wish the game was more modular, I wish you could put water, poison, or lava in any level, I wish you could toggle night-time aesthetics, music, and mechanics separately, hell, more than that, I wish the night-time mechanics were a separate option altogether from the theme, and I wish you could use whatever music you wanted for whatever stage you wanted. There's just a lot of problems with modularity. If you want to use the tools in the specific way the devs intended you're allowed, otherwise you're blocked. Only three liquid speeds, only three scroll speeds, no way to set, say, a trigger for liquid to move to a specific place or something like that, no way to permanently change between different sound effect music tracks partway through a stage, only two subworlds, it just leaves me with a lot of frustration trying to put my ideas into action. More than anything the game could really just use like a trigger/flag system, and I hope they add one.

Nice pitch, but with a few mistaken premises. Creators have not gotten better on average. The extra elements offer some possibilities, but uncreative application results in things like on/off speedrun clones and forced waiting on badly arranged snake blocks. Clear conditions are also a potential gain but a practical failure. Also, the main part of what was possible with element interaction in MM1 has been removed. Nintendo has taken a dislike to unintended gameplay and will swiftly delete levels or even accounts that utilize glitches (of which there are many) which actually make the game more interesting or fun. There are definitely interesting interactions in the new elements, but the overall tableau has been stripped of a lot of depth, seemingly to force a greater focus on traditional gameplay rather than item abuse. Speaking of which, p- switches and pows are now easier to jump off of, it's true. But shells and springs are much, much harder. The claw is applied primarily for tedious or taxing purpose; twisters are all but useless in good levels; Yoshi no longer provides power-ups; the koopa car is a hot mess of wasted potential; so on and so on, lots of things have changed for the worse or have very niche use. Dry bone shell is great but almost as op as cape was in smw. Still, there is a lot to be done with what's new; vertical and night themes, for instance. Except vertical only works in subworld, and the night themes repeat, (ghost/water, airship/sky) add nothing to gameplay,(castle, forest), or are misapplied to create hellish nightmares for endless and multi players. On that subject, endless can skip but multi cannot- nor can multi OR endless use filters. If a player doesn't want 3d world today, or DOES want smb1, well, too bad. The boo feature prevents absolutely nothing in the way of garbage purveyance. More is being made than can be booed. On the other hand, it WILL keep up-and-coming creators from being noticed, because the average (read:bad) player's response to a level they can't play is to rationalize the level is bad and boo it. For well-known creators of innovative yet difficult levels such as Panga or Barbarian, the likes and boos don't matter because they are publicized. For the GP making similar levels, get used to anonymity and no plays unless you drum them up yourself. Nintendo's helpful multiplayer algorithm for level seeding will also make sure harder levels are weeded out, in favor of "hold right to win in 5 seconds" or infinite powerup forced basic boss rush" levels made by people with the self-assured genius of a rodent that has figured out which button to press for the cocaine. This makes multiplayer an agonizing wade through loss after unearned loss due to rng rather than skill. Yay. Let's not forget the lag and wifi connectivity issues, because Nintendo doesn't want to pay for server maintenance, although they WILL charge a subscription fee to play. But hey, it's still a fun game- if it wasn't, I wouldn't have played it enough to know all this. Except I sometimes wonder if it's actually not that fun, and I'm just addicted. Either way, Nintendo could have done soooo much better with the title by simply adding quality of life options (restart from cp, filtering for every mode, etc) and functionality(servers for multi, algorithms that select more than easy levels). But Nintendo is the biggest troll of them all, and doesn't care about skilled players. That's why you get a soybean for beating 100 super expert levels in endless. GG, Nintendo. GG.

I think the only things that kinda bother me in Mario Maker 2 is the lack of visual stuff you could add (sometimes) and that the game presets certain stuff for you (examples: low gravity, upside-down levels, etc.) and I wish people would be able to toggle that on or off. An option to set your own amount of lives for Endless Challenges would also be useful (it'd cap at 50 or 100) Apart from that SMM2 is miles better than the prequel

Too bad this game only got two updates and is now pretty dead. One of my favorite switch games, and I still play it to this day, but I hardly know anyone who has it and still plays it.

I'm pretty including the heavy stones and Toad collection levels in story mode was a deliberate choice to act as a teaser for new features yet to come - or features that just weren't ready in time for release; those two stuck me as having the potential to be particularly bug-prone if thrown haphazardly into a level, and they seem to be making a definite point of preventing bugs and exploits this time around.

I like that it's on the switch, but I still wish some costumes were included in the game. When I finally get a mario maker game, I suppose I could make do... I think I'll like the music stages. also the game has a good visual style and fun to watch. And the story mode sounds amusing.

This game is so amazing! That being said, I HATE the "BOO" button. I think the stage have been good regardless. Tired of working hours to make a stage having my points go down because someone can't beat it. I don't add out of sight thwomps or obscure hidden block keys, why should I be punished?

Actually now your level needs at least 1 like to show up in Endless Challenge, that's the reason you haven't seen many bad stages.

They need at least one play, I'm not sure they need any likes, but if they don't get any likes (and especially if they're getting boos) they'll stop showing up before long. I've... Encountered a couple of 0 clears and I think 0 likes in endless. Only improvement I'd like to see in teaching game design is turning Yamamura's Dojo into a more interactive experience in a third game (or a patch) than sitting and watching text boxes explain these things. Make it more hands on.

I feel like the story mode of mario maker 2 is very underrated it teaches the player how to make good courses while also feeling like its own mario maker game and if nintendo wants to add more course parts as DLC i want it to come with more story mode.

One thing I really wish mario maker 2 had was advanced level editing options. There are so many cool level ideas I've had that were completely ruined by the default game options. Like being able to change whether a specific enemy respawns off screen or an enemy's movement speed.
@jvanb1751
@jvanb1751 5 жыл бұрын
Using bombs and blocks could help with respawning off-screen, using a conveyor could help with movement speed. But yeah those are pretty complex contraptions to get right...
