Here's a take ~ Rio has said to Beth multiple times that it's lonely at the top. And to me, he was clearly referring to himself. i think towards the end of season 1 he started to see her as someone who could rise to the top, with him. Someone he could trust & be his partner ( in more ways than one). During S2, i think that shifted & he developed real feelings for her. He showed it to her in multiple ways ~ everything from the way he looks at her, to the way that he pushes her, to the ( what he thought) was the ultimate gift, Agent Turner. i also think that for him, that was the line that she needed to cross to be the Queen to his King. i think the guy has mad love for her, & Beth has burned him so many times ~ from getting him arrested, twice, to trying to kill him, twice. When he came to her after his final arrest, he says "You did have a choice, you just didn't choose me". Ouch! Someone like Rio doesn't let a person who's betrayed him so many times keep breathing, unless there's something really deep there. As for Beth, i think she's conflicted. i think she keeps betraying him in part because she's angry about the power that he has over her. And he clearly has an emotional, sexual, and...hold over her. One thing she says to Ruby is that she's never looked at Dean the way Stan looks at Ruby. But she does look at Rio that way. Ultimately, though, i think her motivations for betraying him are ~ revenge for his hold on her; power; & her children. She's not willing to sacrifice her kids ( by them losing a mother ) for Rio. And i think that's he's done a LOT of shit to her to keep her in his power ~ and to keep her close. After being subservient for 20 yrs to Dean, belittled & not valued, she wants to come into her own, & doesn't want to give her new found power to Rio. i also think there was a fundamental misunderstanding ~ as he says to brother/cousin " a bitch like that needs someone to pull that ponytail". Sure, she loved that. Until he threatened her children & kidnapped her sister. He literally threatened to kill her family, & is then shocked that she betrayed him? Come on, man! i could be wrong, but those are my thoughts on this.

I agree. I also understand why she shot him at the end of season two. He did a lot of underhanded and manipulative things to keep her in his power that season....and then she discovered that she was, as Ruby put it, "a side piece". Putting a gun in her hands after that was a serious mistake, one that nearly got him killed. I think they have strong feelings for each other, but it definitely stronger on his side. Beth lies to him constantly. She's tried to kill him twice. He appears to simply forgive her each time, then embark on some new scheme which somehow involves her, and forces them to meet on a regular basis. Ordinarily this woman should be dead by now, she has had too many chances. But he clearly enjoys their interaction, and so keeps her around, although he probably isn't consciously aware of why. At the same time Beth turns to him for help constantly. Dean is hopelessly incompetent, and despite his criminal behaviour, Rio is comparatively reliable. Nor does he patronise her as Dean regularly does. And he gives her his full attention, listebn to her ideas, and encourages her, after a fashion. There is an obvious attraction there which Dean has noticed. Beth is in denial about this, however, so when Dean tells her that Rio won't kill something he loves, her reply is that what he loves is money. Dean is not fooled by this, nor is the audience.

i watched that scene a couple times. If you watch Rio's expression, it shifts right after he says it. He goes from kinda smirking, to deadly serious. i just remember the way he looked after they had made the lovin at her house & she promptly dumped him & blocked his number. i think he was hella hurt. In a scene before that talk in the car, he tells her how he's tried to call her repeatedly & she tells him she blocked his #. He replies, with a smile "That's cold". i think he was really hurt by the way she treated him & that's why he said what he did. i see Rio as communicating his feelings in his eyes, not his words.

Beth did the one thing Rio needed since he was a kid: she chose him and chose to protect him over Brother/Cousin. Even Rio speaks about how one rotten egg spoils the bunch. When we first meet him and Nick, the grandmother puts two eggs in the bowl and the rotten one floats. Symbolizing Nick being the rotten egg. When Phoebe and Dave go to Nick and tell him that they will send him or grandma away, Nick says, “Why can’t it be him?” Because Nick again is trying to make Rio take the fall for everyone. Dave responds, “He has something you don’t….” Then they cut to Beth to show what Rio has that Nick doesn’t. Beth chose Rio over Nick, despite Nick’s best efforts to steal her away from Rio (Rio commenting to Nick how he always does that). And at that point, It was a done deal for Rio and his love for her. Because it was the first time she truly had a choice, and she chose him. So, we then cut to them on the bench and Rio placing her hair back and telling her, “You got it, boss.” Because that move from Beth was the one thing he truly needed since he was a kid. And with Beth realizing she won’t want to leave crime, she finally will let bumbling fool cult boy Dean go. Rio will protect her and her kids far better than Dean ever could. I wanted the series to continue, but I’m OK with how they left it. It allows us to find a happy ending in it all. They will get Annie out of prison and all will be fine there. Beth wouldn’t ever allow her to stay, nor would Rio. Annie is family…

Dean needs to be the one to tell Beth that it’s okay, that she can love Rio and be with him. Dean needs to fully let go and allow Beth to be truly happy. She won’t go unless that happens. Plus it’d be so much more meaningful if Dean talked with her. You can see the tension and the unhappiness Beth is under. Dean is trying to hold on to someone that doesn’t feel connected to him anymore. It comes a point in time where you have to let go. And that time is now.

I hate to say, but I think it’s lust. I believe they are drawn to each other because of the high they get from the taste of something completely new from their normal lives. I think Rio has that hood attitude, that showing or saying too much makes you venerable and in his position he can’t afford to and I think Beth is fully aware it could never be anything more than just sex and or business, even if she wanted it to, it would mean she would have to give up everything. plus even though she’s been distracted by Rio I think she’ll always have love for Dean and visa versa. I believe it’s just one of those unfortunate relationships where maybe in a different life time they would of been happily together but not this one.. maybe they are false twin flames?

I know what you mean. She looks tired as hell - that's why I hope she gets her stuff done - what ever that is. Oh and I think the outfits she is wearing in s3 and s4 aren't doing her a favor. She was so good looking in s1 and s2
