On my first day in med school, our biochemistry teacher gave us our first homework: to watch "Whiplash". The next day he explained that if we wanted to be doctors we will need the same drive Andrew had for the drums. It was really scary for the majority of my classmates, but I took it to heart. My first semester at med school was pure insanity. I studied hundrends of hours and ended up being first on my class by a large margin. But it was excruciating. There was no one telling me to perform harder and harder as in the movie, except for myself. I treated me like trash, not sleeping well and even started to ruin my relationships. Along with all of these, "The Chain" by Fleetwood Mac was the song I used everyday to represent my path into the end of the semester, where I would eventually succeed. This video touched me because it captured that journey. One that showed me the life I would never want to live (in terms of the intensity and self hate), but also made me appreciate those moments where a human being can become excellent. Always at a cost.

I love how everyone looks at Fletcher as some horrible evil person and yet the end of the movie shows that what fletcher did worked. The problem with the modern society is that we have so much sunshine blown up our asses so often that we think greatness is just something that happens. That we put in just enough and then we’re there and that just being competent is all it takes. It doesn’t. It takes more than just being good at something, or pleasing the average person with your skills. You can’t measure greatness by the reactions of the average person saying “aw man that’s cool”. The average person is an idiot that forgets the movie they just saw five minutes ago and can’t even explain why they like something beyond “it was cool”. The true measure of greatness is when you are impossible to forget. To be so good that your failure is seen as tragic and your success redefines your craft. And the only way that you become great is to be so dedicated to your craft that you have no other life outside it. You practice so much that you bleed. You do the same actions over and over again for hours on end u til you can’t stand the sounds and sight of it and then do it for several hours more. Doing this until it is impossible to even slip up when bedridden or half dead. That level of greatness comes from an instructors hand that is hard. A teacher that doesn’t just push you to greatness with harsh training but by constantly trying to get you to quit. Because once you overcome that harsh treatment and make it clear to yourself and the teacher that you belong there and that you will not backdown, then you have what all great men and women have. True Grit. The will to win no matter what. That doesn’t come naturally. And it damn sure doesn’t come from a pat on the head. It comes from hard training and refusing to fall no matter how much shit he gives you. So to all the people bitching about how evil fletcher is just look around where you are in life for a second and ask yourself how great you turned out. Even if you are the most competent person at your job have you truly achieved greatness?! Has your work been so stellar that there are entire books written about it to the point where you’re work it part of a curriculum in not only you field but in history itself?! You want greatness? Then this is the kind of teacher you need! Fletcher did nothing wrong.

What he did was commit acts of abuse that led to one of his students committing suicide due to depression. None of that is worth creating the next Charlie Parker. There’s a fine line between pushing your students to be better and downright abusing them, and he crossed that line. Which was the point of the film. Even Damien Chazelle the director of the movie suggested that the ending was not likely a happy ending, because Andrew Neiman likely would’ve entered a life of drug addiction due to his severe obsession of being perfect and all the pressures of fame getting to his head Do you want an example of somebody who doesn’t abuse their students who actually does a great job and inspires them to be better? Look no further than Coach Eric Taylor from Friday Night Lights and you’ll see exactly what I’m talking about.

Sure, that 1 person could probably be the best (emphasis on probably) in his field, but that's not the reason to ruin hundreds of other lives.
