What was the fish you lost because you didn’t upgrade your hooks?
@Briggsy4 жыл бұрын
I think a 50kg-100kg+ Yellowfin Tuna, I had 500m of 50lb on a Catalina 6500, cast my 100g metal out and let it hit the bottom, three full speed winds off the sand and instant screaming drag! Dumped 300m of line at around 10kg-15kg drag in less than a minute, the reel was spraying little bits of oil out of it and i kid you not i saw smoke wisp up a few times, strong as smell of burning plastic and any time i tightened the drag it burnt my fingers. The fish stopped and went sideways, i felt massive beats (like I imagine a huge tuna would give you), and as it starts to go again i slowly tighten the drag until pop! I fall over, nothing on my line anymore. Pretty much have to respool my reel to wind the lure back in and sure enough two of the trebles are fine and one is at 90 degrees to where it was meant to be. Devastating yet life changing haha

I've been gluing the soft swimbaits to the leaded jig for 15 years and it's the only way to go. I first wash all the swimbaits (usually do 50 to 100 at a time) with dish soap in cold water to wash the mold release oil off them makes the glue stick better. The glue here in the US I use is a brand called Loctite Ultra Gel their most waterproof and it's a little flexible. I thread the swimbait on the jig hook till it's about a 1/4 inch (8 mil) away from the head then smear a couple of drops of glue on the swimbait push and hold to the head 5 seconds and you're ready to go. I've caught 10 to 15 lingcod on them before they're destroyed. To remove it just grab the jighead and swimbait twist the swimbait around the shank of the hook and it will shear off and ready for another body. Hopes this helps.

Can you recommend a spooling mechanism for 0.50 line? For light line, 0.28 max i found some cheap mechanism ,but for heavy line is not strong enough, i end up putting half the line i should on my reel. I tried the old "wood spoon tru the spool" clamped down with my foot, but it's not linear it's jumping so, yeah ...and going to a shop somewhere it's not viable at least for now. The crab looks crazy with hooks on both claws😱🤙

Oh man, I also learned the hard and painful way that you MUST upgrade the hooks, lost some of my biggest fish because I didn't 🤦♂️ Some others I lost because of others flaws in my setup, like old line and so... Not easy to everything right to land the fish, especially when you don't have enough money to buy the good stuff whenever you need it

Do you think maybe a slightly smaller nomad riptide would be good for tailor? I love your videos Briggsy. I live in the lower western state and that is all I really have access to pelagic wise, any advice from you is priceless.
@Briggsy4 жыл бұрын
Hi Mate, yeah either one! Tailor sometimes hit massive lures but if your rod can't cast that size go smaller. Really big tailor will eat other tailor (knew a guy who used to put out 2kg tailor as livebait and he'd sometimes catch massive 5kg+ Tailor on them) so don't be scared to throw big lures for tailor. Should say you'll prolly get a lot more hook ups on smaller lures but if you want big fellas go bigger lures. Just casting metals for tailor is a pretty good way to target them though if you're not already doing that, cast a mile and cheaper lures if you get snipped!
@ribosome16814 жыл бұрын
@@Briggsy Cheers mate, I usually use metals but have got into surface fishing because it is so fun to see the fish chomp down a lure on the surface ( maybe because I'm a kid), anywho thanks heeps! Hopefully i can get a Riptide sometime soon.
@justarandomguy67434 жыл бұрын
im not realy a fan of this kind of setup, im used to fishing with a hand and reel only, but watching you and cavy use it makes me wanna use it too, but since for this setup you are not realy touching the line by your bare hands, its kinda difficult to feel the tension of the line and play with the drag and pull till the fish get exhausted so you can land it. else youll end up with the line getting snapped or bended hooks making you lose your fish.

As you know by now briggsy I'm binge watching your videos mate. Is it only the stock trebles that are crappy or even in line single hooks like that on the xrap sxrl12... Hi Mate, it depends what you want to use it for. GT on the reef flats PE5 100lb leader, Tuna off the rocks PE3 80lb leader. PE3 is more of a natural fit if you’re talking about Daiwa sizing but you can definitely go up or down from there if you’re doing something unique.
