Morning Michon. I saw this segment on the news as well. We spoke before on here. Speaking as a Bmore native and Product of the Public School System here (City College Graduate; class of 04), education starts at home. For me personally, it's simple; they just don't give a damn at North Avenue. Moreover, the parents act like they are helpless but lack the accountability in their own children's education. I came up w/ it and seen it upclose. I deal with many of these kids turn adults at work. It shows. We gotta be honest about it all. They hate Fox 45, Chris Pasit and McKenzie for bringing to light what we have known for OVER 30 years; many children of my generation here are borderline illiterate and many were passed through the system. With that said, many of us had to take control of our own education. I grew up downtown; ten minutes walking distance from the main library on Cathedral St. I spent many years there just trying to improve myself through reading. Overall the issue is accountability w/ the parents. Sonja Santelises doesn't give a damn. Mayor Afro head doesn't either. Knowing what I know about the system here I decided to not teach. It would be an uphill Battle.

Wow... I mean I really wish I could say that I'm shocked but the lack of accountability is displayed 24/7/365 on these KZbin streets. If her son cannot read, that's her fault. She was not reading to him at bed time... she was not sitting with him, sounding out letters... going over the alphabet with him.... it starts in the home.

I was a new Fourth grade Teacher and had students that could hardly read. The white Teacher that had the students before me, didn't tell me anything about the students. I found out by paperwork and having a class talk section, no work for the students. So the Teacher before me didn't care, giving the students 21 words instead of breaking it down to 10 for the slow readers. Also, the principal wanted me to change grades. l fussed her out, Ieft public schools and went back to Childcare. I wasn't going to the Prison Estates, with the staff. It hurt me a lot, because l tried to help the students and my class was doing good. I was never a go along, to get along person.

I quiz, test, have conversations about comprehension of a subject etc. it is MY JOB as a parent to not only challenge and have high expectations of my child, but also myself. I have moved to better school districts multiple times. That too is my job. I have told Women if your area is failing you MOVE to THE BEST school district you can afford, and keep working to do better. I put in at least 3hrs of homework with my kids every day.

If I didn’t have my husband to help me with our two children, I would’ve ended up living I don’t know where, most assuredly homeless, because of my disability. People looking at me and talking to me don’t believe I have a disability., until I work for them, or live with them, and then I would drive them crazy because I would constantly do stupid things. So the only jobs that I could do was clean toilets, clean peoples houses, sometimes work behind a register, very low income jobs. We both worked multiple jobs, leaving one job and going to another, Never having a vacation , to raise our kids, and it was worth it-but those days are gone, I can’t even do that anymore. Believe me I tried college, couldn’t do it. There are some people like me that just can’t be secretaries, or college educated, or intrapreneurs. So they live in areas where they just can’t afford to leave if they want to leave. I’m not saying that’s everybody. I just want people to know that there are people that do deserve to have help or section 8 or food stamps, it just depends on their circumstances.

How about the parents do what I did as a parent every night. I worked with my children every night on their homework. I have a full time job, supported a family of six on a single income and did not receive any financial assistance. I still found time to make sure my children could read, write and do math at their level. Not to mention, as a history buff, I made sure they knew history. Just another fine example of a strong and independent woman that gets public assistance and doesn't raise her children.

Since l live in Baltimore and a retired Teacher from Public Schools and Childcare. Parents keep blaming the Teachers for why their child can't read. It starts at home first and we as Teachers implement a lesson plan. A lot of these parents know their child can't read and some of the parents can't read either. You as a parent can get help for your child reading problems, but rather blame the Teachers for everything. Now the school board complaining the students can't do math. In order for the students to understand the problem, you still have to be able to read. If you want your child to get a good education as a parent you've to put your child in private school. Stay off the electronics and spending money for lace front wigs, tarantula eyelashes, makeup and nail products. Use that money if the father not helping to get your child or children a good education. Now that the students are talking back to disrespect and fighting the Teachers. Just say they're finding other careers and not having to deal with this hassle. It's so embarrassing for parents to complain that their child can't read. What are the parents doing to solve this on going reading problem, without blaming others?

I homeschool my daughter and the very first few things we did was teach her how to read . she can read an entire book by herself of course it’s first grade level book however education starts at home help your kids the success is so much better there’s only so much a teacher can do with 20 something kids for your own child.

I don’t understand why she’s putting so much responsibility on the school. My husband and I are struggling financially yet we make certain our daughter has a tutor cuz she struggles with math. The teachers can only do so much! You work with him at home on math and reading madam!!! Geez!!

My husband and I made a decision early with our children to remove them from HISD because of the poor learning curve the low test scores etc we place them in private schools until we were able to win the lottery to get both our children into charter School college preparatory schools I took the time to work with my children at home at an early age they were very advanced at a young age by the time my children were old enough to go to Head start they already knew their colors their numbers and they were reading as well both my children tested at a high school level when they were only in elementary school
