I really liked your bit at the beginning about being realistically optimistic. I struggle with this bc in my country (the US) cases are spiking and the president can’t be bothered to do anything about it, so it’s easy to feel like things are never going to get better. But they will. Someday, they will.

Thank you for managing to be so positive, despite everything. Although I am not a professional, I have been involved in amateur theatre and improvisation all my life. My whole life revolves around it, and has done forever. Everything I was going to do, or would have expected to be doing has been cancelled...and it will be a year and half to two years before I can go back to it. That is, if I can get back to it at all. I have been struggling to come to terms with not performing and the prospect of my life not revolving around it. This gives me hope.

Going through these videos and holy shit THANK YOU OLIVER for mentioning Something Rotten in Birmingham, because I’ve wanted to see that show with my dad since it opened on Broadway, and I completely missed that it was coming over here. (Even though it’s still a massive journey for us as we live well up north) THANK YOU

I’m so happy my local theatre company is still doing a performance of Xanadu. I am in it and I had my opening day today on the 16. We had to wear clear masks, the audience how to social distance, and we had a live stream of it as well for grandparents

I done a Les Mis production with a revolve, every rehearsal the director carefully drew it out on the floor in chalk and measured to make sure it was the same dimensions etc 😂 Most of the stage revolves happened at the end of scenes and it was mostly 180 degree revolves so in rehearsals we either performed to the back wall or the front wall depending on where the stage would be when we walked on from the wings. Then when we rehearsed with the revolve for the first time, we went to the same spot and knew the stage would eventually turn so the audience could see us. So yeah, not that big a change for the actors but a real headache for the production team I imagine.

I think they give you ‘real’ metal swords because the weight of them helps with acting... it would be hard to swing a plastic/foam/rubber one convincingly because they would weigh so little... the same with stage guns, they are normally metal and heavy so the performers handle them more convincingly.

I've done shows during the Australian summer (think 40 degrees) in a tiny theatre with about twenty girls in a dressing room that's probably better suited to about 6-8 people with no air conditioning (or internet). One of the shows everyone was in full medieval costume and during intermission all of us girls with just wander around in just our bras and undies. There was also no window in the dressing room or internet.

Fight choreographer here! If a sword is just for show and not going to be used in a fight, then yeah, it could be plastic, but it's never going to look as good, even from the audience far away. The alternative to make it slightly less scary is to use an aluminum (hi, American) weapon instead of steel. But if you have to fight with it, it's so much safer to have a high quality, real (but dull) sword.

I think a lot of the hierarchy comes from pay... I always think about Daniel Radcliffe, he doesn’t have to work again ever, but he can make his choices based off what he wants to do, while others aren’t necessarily in the position to be choosy about their roles. They need to take roles that will pay, which impacts that hierarchy “ranking”

The spelling of "theatre" in the U.S. is a weirdly complicated matter. Some people always use "theater," some people always use "theatre," and some people use them interchangeably. Other people use "theater" for the location and "theatre" for the general art form. I think I've also seen people use "theatre" for the art form and live venues but "theater" for movie theaters (cinemas). It's a pretty strange phenomenon because with most other words like center, fiber, meter, etc., we always use the "er" spelling.

i don't understand how anyone is thinking about going back to normal life yet, us in australia are going into our second wave after getting now to 1 or 2 cases a day, now we are at 200 a day in one state. PLS EVERYONE STAY SAFE. if we just knuckle down now we won't have to keep going in and out of quarantine.

I think there is a 'snobbery' about West End...not from the stars, but from the fans. The last time I saw Les Mis in a touring cast here was just...the worst Les Mis I had ever seen (and I've been to high school versions). It was just... 'off'. Someone said "well, you've seen it on West End so obviously nothing is going to be as good." but, no, that's not it at all. I've seen AMAZING touring casts and AMAZING school casts. This one just fell flat.
