They aren't really solving the maze by any metric, they just fill the available space. Fluids and dyes 'solve' a maze because once they find a path, it modifies upstream flow and the optimal path becomes obvious, with less viable paths even emptying out. You can look at a fluid solved maze post solve and say, "I know the best path through this maze'. This solve is particularly useless, because the best path requires you to got all the way to the local top in every position, meaning you gain no information on the solution from the final state. Ha, it actually does give you 1 square that you know isn't part of the solution. So, the solve eliminates the square 2 positions above the exit. Which has 3 sides anyway, so I don't think anyone was thinking it was part of the path.
