The bit about the aliens is a direct quote from the book, it’s explained more there. Essentially Adam and the Them were taking about a bunch of crack science fiction magazines Adam had gotten from Anathema the day before (2 days before the Apocalypse) and he claimed aliens had changed. Instead of fighting everyone, aliens were the peacekeepers of the universe, etc, and delivered that message. The conversation Adam had was the source of most of the strange incidents preceding the Apocalypse-that-wasn’t, which is clearer in the book.
