I'm and East Coast guy (MD). I am terrified of snakes. Visited AZ last July and went all through Saguaro NP. Every step was like walking through a mine field. Very careful not to come across any snakes. I guess they warn you first though.

Yes, but if you are moving fast, like a trail runner or MTBer, then that might trigger their response.

AFTER 5 mins trying to set up my gopro to film myself going down a very rocky drop, (in one knee) I looked over and I see this huge rattle snake staring and rattling a big boulder a foot and a half away from my food, of course I didn't hear I had headphones inside of my full face helmet. felt like my heart stopped for a few seconds! Still dont know why it dint bite me.

The snake was LITERALLY crossing and “moving along” until this guy whipped out his phone and started approaching. All he had to do was nothing. Then let the snake continue to cross. Instead he caused this situation by approaching 🤦‍♂️

Actually he was not moving when I saw him, and I was already wearing and filming with a GoPro, so I did not intentionally stop, just to video the snake.

I live in Michigan but this spring I'm going to be heading out towards Arizona and New Mexico. Before I bike any off-road trails in the desert I will be sure to get snake chaps.

Hey, Dirt-For-Brains, he's waiting for you to back off! If you encounter a snake on the trail the best thing to do is back up and give THEM a few minutes to calm down and move on. Once they realize that you're not a threat to them, they'll get bored and slither away. But when you throw dirt at them or move your bike wheel at them, that only irritates them. Snakes have the right of way in the desert. YOU'RE the one trespassing in THEIR YARD!

I couldnt mam i would have a heart attack if that were me i would of been gone miles before the snake even saw me jesus. I am very scared of snakes idk how you do this i just would have a heart attack im from ireland going on holiday to Arizona in April if 2021 im excited but i hope i dont come across any of these. Any tips for when im hiking alone?

First of all, if you are hiking alone, always let someone know when you are starting, when you expect to be back, and your exact route. Wear actual hiking shoes/ boots with proper socks, along with loose fitting long pants. Always be aware of your surroundings (no blasting headphones). Stick to roads and trails, especially in grasslands. Rattlers maximum strike distance is 2/3 of their length, and they won't pursue humans, so you'll be fine in an encounter if you maintain a respectable distance and just let them go about their business. Usually they slither off on their own, unlike the stubborn snake in this video. Many times there will be an easy detour route around the snake. Arizona has 13 rattlesnake species, and they can be found up to 11,000 feet in elevation, which accounts for about 98% of the state. So, there is the potential for a rattlesnake encounter in Arizona whether one is in forest, woodland, grassland, or desert. They even come out on warm winter days in the lower elevations. The Mojave is the most venomous, but the Western Diamondback (the type in the video) accounts for the majority of all bites. They are found in roughly the southern 2/3 of the state up to 6,500 feet. The reason it remained on the trail, even initially, was because of the "attacker". In these situations, just get out of sight for a minute and it will be on its way. Or, just go around ... ya there are bushes, but walking through the desert for ~60 feet isn't that hard.

Any time you go off trail in the desert, especially a mountain bike trail it leaves tracks.... which others follow, then you have a braided trail before you know it.... and as soon as I nudged him he responded... no harm to either party...

Also, it won't be as dangerous for the next cyclist / hiker coming through if is off the trail. You might have kept it from getting run over or biting someone else. Good move!

They can only strike about half their body length. That snake looked about 4 ft (1.2m) so it could probably only strike about 2 feet (.6m)

I used to think the same.... but I almost learned the hard way shoo-ing another rattler off the trail one time.... it literally struck and flung himself at me (of course I had really pissed him off by that time) I would say he was able to go 2/3 of his body length and missed my hand by only about 6".... so I have even more respect for distance from these fellows now!

I guess I was making a comparison to how you were approaching it. Kicking dirt and pushing your bike towards the snake probably confused the snakes interpretation of your intentions. Animals typically attack/lunge/strike quickly, and even birds/lizards/weasels evade at ludicrous speeds. I'm not saying you did anything wrong, in fact, I would of turned around. I'm just saying wild animals are on a whole other time frame than us, so I wasn't surprised the snake stood its ground.

When people do this to move a Rattlesnake it pisses me off, and clearly shows they don't know what there doing. When a Rattlesnake is threatened it will NOT move. The best thing to do is threaten it from a distance an leave so that you still have a visual but the snake can't see you. They will retreat as soon as they feel like the threat has left. This is just showing off. People think they are doing a service by moving it off the trail. But really the snake knows it's in a danger zone and will leave anyway. Fucking with snakes this way is the #1 reason dumbasses get bite.

This is why I'm glad I'm a runner and not a biker. They can hear pounding from a long distance and are less likely to be on the trail by the time a runner comes through. The guy should have stepped back about 50 meters and started to run towards the snake...not close enough to get bit but close enough to alert it to a heavy animal charging down the path...there's a reason why bears and other big wild mammals don't get bit by snakes.

That is true, they do not have external ears but sound makes vibrations and those vibrations are carried to it's inner ear through ground and the snakes body.... so no, they do not hear in the human sense, but they can "detect" when there is noise or sound :-)

Can a snake tell the difference between a bike and a man? I mean, if you were threatened by a man poking a bike at you, and you had a Magnum, you would know that you should shoot the man, not shoot the bike - does a snake know that? Would the snake bite the bike if that was closer to it?
