It's been argued by many that this song is the best thing in the rock and roll movie, "FM." Interesting that Walter Becker played both bass and lead guitar on this title track for the 1978 film, and that they got The Eagles' Glenn Frey, Don Henley and Timothy B. Schmit to contribute backing vocals ("Turn up The Eagles the neighbors are listening"). As they did on the "Aja" track and hit single, "Deacon Blues," they borrowed "The Tonight Show's" tenor saxophonist Pete Christlieb. I was lucky to meet him when he performed at the Mt. Hood Jazz Festival in Gresham, Oregon in the mid-'80s. He graciously signed my 1977 "Aja" album jacket, and it would do my musical heart good to think that he has watched your incredible performance of the song he contributed so much to.

Yes, a truly great version of FM. But I'm curious why most cover bands don't seem to want to take on the full guitar solo on, midway through, always passing over to more sax. Don't think that even Walter Becker even took it on during his Live S.Dan shows. Wonder why. It is one of the great guitar solos. And the guitarist Don Regan here ( at 3:08) looked very capable of a longer solo. Imagine if someone like Dave Gilmour were to have a go!
@goodstuff8238

Hi Dee John! This is Mike, lead vocalist. First off Thank You from all of us for the comment. We really appreciate it! You are obviously a big SD fan and I I can give you our take on that. There might be a couple of different versions of FM out there, but our arrangement features both the sax and guitar. The sax is the prominent instrument in that signature solo and even though the guitar is always a key ingredient in the SD mix, we wanted to feature the sax in our live arrangement. When we added FM to the set list we also figured on a structure that was more like the version played primarily on the radio, which doesn't have the long guitar solo at the end. Don does so many intricate solos which are extremely close, or similar to the record throughout the night, and although a longer solo would have been easy for him to add with his own expert spin, we wanted a bit more jazz tinged edge to the outro and Phil, sax player, is the guy for that. Fans of the band also really love the trade off between the guitar and sax at the outro. So in short, we wanted to recapitulate that sax sound when bringing the tune home. From what I have read FM was written rather quickly for the animated movie of the same name. Donald and Walter went into the studio and played the piano and guitar to a click track, so it is Walter doing that outro solo. Again, we appreciate the comment and hope that I gave you some insight on your thoughts! Stay safe and well and Thank You for posting!

@@goodstuff8238 ...Mike, thanks for replying. I understand your point. Of course the Radio only ever played the shorter sax version. And I only heard the full length guitar version when I bought the vinyl album version which was used on the 'FM' movie soundtrack. And it's on there that you'll hear the longer guitar solo. It's so impressive, it's as though the guitar is actually weeping. I guess I got a bit excited when I thought Don was going to take it on. But I was wondering if you're thinking of adding more upfront vocalists into the band to take on those catchy choruses, as there was just the two of you taking on that beautiful wall of sound harmony during the Gaucho chorus in the video from Pavinci's N.J. Only I recently watched Scott Sherriff's Band, along with guitar guest Larry Carlton, performing Live 'The Nightfly' album, and I was absolutely bowled over by them as were the crowd. I think they have about 3 or 4 upfront chorus backing singers. Some video comments even suggested that Fagen should sign the whole Band up and hit the road just like when the great Brian Wilson discovered The Wondermints performing back in 1998/9, and signed the lot of them up and went on Tour...cutting out the politics and in fighting with The Beach Boys (mostly with Mike Love). By the way your vocals are so like the tones of Donald Fagen. And the whole Band sounds great. Thought it was funny when those dancers came on blocking out the camera man's view of the Band. Gotta go listen to it again. I've always loved the bass in FM. But watching Scott Sherriff's Band performing 'The Nightfly' is truly spooky. No one can work out how and why they sound exactly like The Nightfly studio musicians and backing singers, when you consider how Fagen was such a perfectionist that he would fly back in all of his session musicians if he wasn't happy with a recorded track. @@deejohn1659 Thanks for the reply. I think I have heard that version of New Frontier at some point and it is excellent. We like to keep the ensemble nice and tight, which means small enough to play in some venues that cannot afford to pay as much as they would a 12, or 14 piece unit. GOOD STUFF is a fairly new band. We've been together about 4 1/2 years and we are really a 4 artist tribute. We also do material from Sting, Stevie Wonder and the incomparable Gino Vannelli. We have been getting some larger venues lately and we do have a small group of great female vocalists that we work with, so you never know what lies ahead in the future. There are venues that ask us specifically for our 4-artist show and some that ask for all SD. We just did a third show in Asbury Park last weekend that was all SD, but prior dates were our 4-artists show. Sometimes we just pick the type of show we want to do by the demographic. Either way it's a great show with some top flight musicians and we appreciate the comments. We also want to Thank You Very Much for subscribing to our channel. We all appreciate it!

Hi Stephan and Thank You so much for the comment! We all appreciate it very much. 😊 As for the tempo, the original record is about 111 BPM. I just clocked ours at 110 BPM. I've heard of Steely Dan fans being nit-picky, but c'mon man!...LOL! You must be an avid Dan fan....I think a a 1 BPM difference should be acceptable. So many bands speed up songs for live performances to the point where the tempo is just way too fast, but we respect your vision.
