@VerowakReacts I leave a comment on this film all the time. I worked with Robin Williams on a film and when people say "never meet your hero, they'll always let you down" doesn't apply to him... He was such a gentleman and great person. You should watch 'Midnight Caller', 'Insomnia' or 'One Hour Photo' to see him play very different from most films he's cast in. Loved the reaction, by the way

@@TerryNationB7Ironically, I think Jim Carrey playing a comedian (Andy Kaufman) in Man on the Moon is probably his most serious and arguably best work. I couldn’t stand Andy Kaufman and therefore didn’t like the movie that much, but Jim Carrey was astonishing in the role IMO. Worth the watch just for his performance.

The line: “Most days I wish I never met you because then I could sleep at night, and I wouldn't have to walk around with the knowledge there was someone like you out there….and I didn’t have to watch them throw it all away.” hits so hard right in the gut. The lines in the scene when Sean talks about his late wife's farting antics were ad-libbed by Robin Williams. That is why Matt Damon was laughing so hard. Something interesting about Stellan Skarsgård: Three of his kids all went on to be incredibly notable famous actors. While the rest of his children are still successful in their own right, Bill is known for John Wick, The Divergent and as The Sinister Pennywise in IT. Gustaf for his work in The Way Back, AIR and Oppenheimer. And Alexander you might know as True Blood character Eric Northman, who would also star in the film, The Northman. (Yes, there is a connection there) But yeah, I was quite blown away at the impressive legacy of the Skarsgård family.

Robin Williams gave what I thought was an extremely disturbing and memorable performance in One Hour Photo (2002). You might also like his performance in Moscow on the Hudson (1984). I'm of an age where I regularly saw Williams on television's Mork & Mindy when I was a child, and so I always had him (incorrectly) filed away in my head as just "that guy who does zany comedy," which I have never appreciated. So it was eye opening to see him here in Good Will Hunting and it made me go look at other dramatic roles that he played.

There's a clip floating around of a short video call that Robin Williams made to a dying woman in New Zealand. It was meant to be private. The family released it later, after Williams's death, I think. It's just Robin touching base with the woman, who had always wanted to meet him. The thing is that there is so much tiredness and pain in Williams's eyes, that you can tell he's going through a hard time himself, but he's pulled himself together and made this effort for this woman across the world that no one else was ever supposed to know about. He wasn't throwing himself in front of a train for someone, but it was still such a clear act of selfless love that it feels almost like you shouldn't be watching. He seemed like a genuinely kind man.

The farting wife story Robin tells is completely ad-libbed. Matt’s laughter in the scene is genuine belly laughs because he was not expecting Robin’s words in the scene.

You can definitely see Matt Damon’s acting potential with him being Will, and you certainly feel the hole that Robin Williams left behind when he died. ‘Dead Poet’s Society’ and ‘One Hour Photo’ are good Robin Williams movies, that are different types of dramas.

Such a remarkably well written film by Damon and Affleck - their Oscar was well-deserved. And at a such a young age. Really their best work. Damon’s performance here as well as in some of his other early stuff like Courage Under Fire shows his true acting chops much more than his later mostly popcorn flick work. Much the same can be said for Affleck. Williams was made to play this role and again a well deserved Oscar here. If you want more of him: “Awakenings” with DeNiro; and “Good Morning Vietnam.” Just now realizing Rip from Yellowstone (Cole Hauser) is in this as Billy.

"Perfect" is obviously a huge word in this context but if someone wants to claim it of this movie, well, i'm certainly not going to fight them on it, put it that way :). (everyone's great in this - Minnie Driver maybe doesn't get lauded as much but she's fantastic too IMO, her and Damon's chemistry is so natural - but Robin Williams especially is so good, it feels like in every scene you can see his character's entire life in his face)

21:22 I am glad you said this. People are SO hard on Tom, and it's easy to be, but he's right there filling his role and being supportive for people. He kind of echoes Casey Affleck's character, Morgan, who is sort of on the bottom rung of his group, but he just is always on his own thing and never backs down.

Its a fantastic movie and kind of wish we had more of this quality from them. Also rip Robin, always a joy to watch on screen even in the serious roles definitely recommend watching others from him that aren't straight comedys but even those that are! Patch Adams, 24 hour photo, bicentennial man, Toys, good morning vietnam, mrs doubtfire and so on and so forth, just a huge filmography to watch from mr williams alone.

Definitely worth checking out more Robin Williams entries. His range in dramas like these are incredibly noteworthy as he was more known for comedic roles. Insomnia directed by Christopher Nolan showed he can play a sinister character, One Hour Photo is another; albeit disturbed as opposed to competently evil. Devastated when he suddenly passed, although very pleased he won an Oscar for Good Will Hunting.

Today it is so easy for others to find this movie. It is always near the too of whatever list you search. I semi-randomly picked this movie one evening while stuck in northern Atlanta for a class or convention. My first name being Bill which like Will is a nickname for William influenced my decision a little. But I knew nothing other than the title when I picked it out of the 10 or 12 showing near my hotel. I have seen it enough to quote most lines from memory.

The story about his wife farting was improvised by Robin, Matt's laughing was genuine and if you look closely you can see the camera operator shaking too. Robin also improvised the very last line of the movie. Scary when you realise that Matt & Ben wrote this classic when they were only 22 and when his performance was recognised by the Academy, Robin referenced their age during his acceptance words. The whole speech is one of the best Oscar moments ever, you can feel the love in the room for Robin, especially from the host Billy Crystal, his old friend from the very early days of trying to make it in showbiz. It wasn't polite applause from his peers - it was genuine love for a man who had brought so much joy & laughter but was also capable of touching performances like this. Wonderful. The award and speech are on YT, do try and watch.

The scene where he talks about his wife farting was improvised. It was so random, it even caught the camera man off guard, which is why the camera is shaking at that point also. RW was a total genius when it came to improv, and pretty much all films he's acted in are treasures because of it.
