The HBO series is exceptional. I've owned it on VHS and two separate DVD releases. It's the most faithful adaptation of the comics, which I was a fan of greatly throughout the 90's. The main issue, aside from the FMV quality CGI, was that the movie was geared as an action film whereas the animated series was less action and more substance, horror, urban crime, and conspiracy thriller (which is what the comics largely were).
@31webseries9 жыл бұрын
Nick Michalak I remember the HBO series. I had never seen anything like it before, absolutely dark and absolutely brilliant.
@NickMichalak9 жыл бұрын
31webseries McFarlane's been talking for a while about launching a new animated series, which would be AWESOME! That show just got better as it went on, and ended far too early. Also, I still have a teaser poster saved on my hard drive for a Spawn movie sequel that says, "Emerging 2000." This was officially released by McFarlane back in 1999, but clearly, nothing came beyond that.
@TheMovieDoctorful9 жыл бұрын
+Nick Michalak while not as good as the HBO series, I still think the movie had some substance and horror to it. I look at the Spawn movie the same way I look at Mary Shelley's Frankenstein (1994); a well acted, well written companion-piece to an INFINITELY superior original with some unexpected heart...That admittedly, could have been better. ...For the record, I actually think Spawn (1997) is better then Mary Shelley's Frankenstein (1994).
@ARCWuLF7 жыл бұрын
I would say that season one of the HBO series was incredible (thanks to its many continuing story threads, characters from the comic, and super-hero action scenes), but seasons two and three (where Spawn just left his mask off and hid in the shadows for the majority of the show, and was not the focus of it) were nearly intolerable snore-fests.

I liked the film a lot as a teenager. It has terrific cinematography, and great performances from both Michael Jai White and John Leguizamo. The soundtrack is great too. The only letdown is some of the cheese-ball dialogue. I don't think it's a bad movie, and even if it is one...it's an entertaining one. I'm willing to give the CGI a pass because it's the 90's and because of it's budget, the only time I have a problem with it is in the hell scenes.

The Meteor Man and Blankman were made before Spawn. It was the third superhero movie led by a black hero, not the first. It also only beat Steel to wide release by two weeks so both were in production simultaneously. It wasn't like there were no black superheroes, movie heroes, or movie superheroes. Also the fact that Steel was in production at the time and that Blade was in preproduction helped a lot. ( I, um, happen to know a lot about this subject.)

Spawn wasn't actually the first superhero movie with a black male lead. Blankman (1994) and the Meteor Man (1993), while terrible, both beat spawn for the spot, and Steel (1997) was only released 14 days after Spawn, while having started production first. Unfortunately, all three of those movies also suck badly, so, well, forget I said anything. Spawn was the first!

Spawn WAS the 1st superhero with a black male lead that was from a comic book. Meteor Man and Blankman were NOT comic books before they were movies. They were just original movies. So yea Spawn was the 1st

the spawn movie is awesome, it also did something the comics and animated didn't..it brought spawn into the minds of the public. most people you ask about spawn now remember the movie not the comics or cartoon, most people I've talked to didn't even know it was a comic beforehand.

I remember seeing part of this movie on TV once when I was seven. Didn't know what movie it was until 16 years later when I saw Nostalgia Critic's review.

Have you heard The Dark Saga by Iced Earth. It's basically an album by a band who think they're Iron Maiden smashing Metallica doing an album about Spawn

I loved this movie growing up. I used to watch it every month or so, but it got worse the more I watched it. I still remember like 80% of the lines.

Speaking as someone who was a fan of the comic and who was fully cognizant of movies at the time, I can tell you, matter of fact, that 'Spawn' didn't look so hot even when it was brand new. I mean, we already had 'Terminator 2,' 'Jurassic Park,' and 'Independence Day' at that point, so we already knew what good special effects looked like, and brother, Spawn just didn't compare.

It still boggles my mind that Todd McFarlane thought Spawn would be the makings of an entertainment empire. Look at every other super successful comic book property. What do they have in common? They're all safe for kids. Even Batman. The fact is Spawn was doomed to fail no matter what because he's more suited as a niche thing instead of the empire McFarlane tried to turn him into.

+DrMaddWorld Spawn was the #1 selling book for years, the toys were flying off the shelves, the HBO series was huge and by all means, the movie should have been bigger. The studio just didn't see the bigger picture, its the same mindset. Comic books are not safe for kids, at least not all of them. Plenty of the biggest titles have themes that are way beyond children. Same goes for video games and yet people still label them kid stuff.

+GoodBadFlicks I wasn't trying to say that comics are for kids. I love Killing Joke and that's clearly for adults. What I was saying is it seems weird that Spawn of all characters would be an attempt to make a new franchise when most multimedia franchises (ie Star Wars, Marvel etc.) are much easier to build with characters that are far more accepting to the mind's of younger people which sometimes does include children. To be fair I am looking at this long after Spawn fell out of popularity and since I never knew him in his hay day that could reflect my outlook on him.

+DrMaddWorld While Todd McFarlane didn't quite build up a media Empire, but it did build up a good media Barony. Not all of McFarlane's projects worked (he had a video game company that went out of business), his comics and toy company are still going strong. However, the comic book industry it self sagged and Todd has not manage to keep up with the changing times.

Edwin North See but Deadpool wasn't created until after X-men was popular. I'm not saying comics have to be super kid friendly. I'm saying how weird it is that someone thought the character whose origin is "He goes to hell but is sent back with superpowers" would resonate with people enough to make a media empire.
@rootbeermcgee7 жыл бұрын
You are right, even though Batman and other characters have stories that are clearly aimed at adults for the most part they can be workshopped into kid friendly versions, eg Batman: Brave and the Bold, even Deadpool has been drawn in a "cute child friendly version" even Punisher in Lego Marvel was made to be a guy that punishes people that litter and don;t care of the environment. Spawn's origin already stops any chance of him being child friendly.

Spawn is the most generic comic book title I've ever read. It owes so much to Ghost Rider and Hellblazer, yet has none of the character development, emotional weight and nuance from either.

Ah I love Spawn. But I do recognise your gripes with character, MacFarlane isn't that imaginative, but at that I still feel the character development is good for the secondary characters, Spawn himself didn't develop until other writers took over the comic. And the character owes allot to Batman, Venom and Spiderman, and yes to Ghost Rider and Hellblazer too, shit it even takes some storylines from Preacher too. But I still like the character, I just prefer violent comics to be honest.

I believe from the DVD commentary the Malbogia computer model was lifted from "an American werewolf in paris" basically because they ran out of money and time.
