I think getting McFarlane on board for the cartoon, and also having it as directly tying into the comics helped. My understanding is that the numbers that flash up in the cartoon shows where the cartoon happens within the comics. I watched the cartoon straight after watching the original Hellsing anime, and honestly, I couldn't say which was better.

Hey, Minty, here's an bonus fact for ya: during filming, the crew were discussing using cgi to make the Clown look smaller. There's an extra detail that's easy to miss in the movie. Before fighting breaks out at the fancy dinner there is a gorgeous redhead in a green and white dress walking around. She is wearing special earrings known in the comics as a hunting license. they basically look like a zoom in of a spawns face. She is literally an Angel, out to hunt demons. Mortal Kombat actually fits as a PG-13 if you follow the storyline. The fatalities are almost all non-canon. Barely anyone ever dies in the series, and if they do, it's offscreen between games, and always retconned away. If you check the story of the first game, the first movie is actually far more violent, as the only death was Scorpion burning Sub-Zero.
