13T Front needs to mate with a 42T Rear for best performance.

My bike came with the 13t installed. I put the 14t back on it and am so glad. I am happy to work the gear box a bit more. There’s a sweet spot from around 5000 to 6500 rpm for me in lower gears. I have to pay attention between 1st and 2nd to avoid missed shifts. Cruising in 5th or 6th is fine and if I avoid the brakes fast enough for me. Love it calling out the 13t myth

Thanks mate. I’m planning to do a trail ride near Taupo in a couple of months that might see it go back on, but for riding on the road it was so limiting it’s not funny.

What about trying a 42 rear? Not quite geared as low as the 13 but lower than factory. Bit of a compromise. Or as you say, just ride it stock - save money for a 300 :)

Yeah a 42 rear is what I’ll try next. Having just chucked new tyres on the 13 might be bearable for a while but it wouldn’t be a permanent solution for me.

...and I've heard of people reducing the rear sprocket some teeth on the 300 Rally to improve the open road performance, but still be happy with the 1st and 2nd gear behaviour on dirt. Sure, you've a little more torque on a 300 to cope, but worth it if it suits the needs of the rider.

Yeah for sure. I’ve ridden with a 300 with a 38t rear and it seemed to ride much like the 250 in terms of speed. Rider was happy with it and I guess that’s what counts.

I think the stock gearing is just about perfect on the highway for the engine power and power characteristics. There's a bit of a dead spot around 95-100 km/h in 6th but the engine comes alive between 105-115 while still being smooth (mine loves 112-113 indicated as a cruising speed), while still being able to pretty quickly reach 120-125 briefly if you don't mind some vibration. The speed limit *is* 100, after all! How'd you manage 138? Downhill? I haven't really found anywhere off-road that 1st has been unmanageably tall. Idling in 1st on flat ground gives 7 km/h, and you can load it up until it drops to 5 km/h without stalling. Changing between 14 and 13 teeth is only changing those by half a km/h but it's dropping a 110 km/h cruise to 102.

mine leaks from putting on a 13 is that normal?

@@Leanedback450 leaks what? Leaking anything isn’t ideal, especially from around the counter shaft area

@@OnThrottle so I put a front 13t sprocket and it leaked and at the service at dealership said cause it’s too much power so it leaks from the countershaft. I put the old one back on still leaking I like the 13 because I wheelie and stunt
