For my final video in Germany, I take you guys on a drive through the part of Bavaria that I got to call home for the past year and a half, known as the Oberpfalz, or Upper Palatinate. After driving through a few, small Bavarian towns, we arrive at one of my favorite places off the beaten path and reflect on my wonderful time in Germany. I take you on a quick hike up to Burgruine Waldeck and talk about the lessons that this country has taught me and what I loved that I'll carry with me as I enter the next chapter of my life.

@@margritpiepes8242 It is a old song. The song Auld lang syne, written by the poet Robert Burns (1758-1796), is based on a Scottish folk tune. It has been freely translated into many cultural languages, and it is popular worldwide as a heartfelt farewell song. It sounds at the end of every major scout meeting.

I live in the Netherlands near by the German border. Germany is our second home. We go to Germany at least 4 times a month. South Germany is very beautiful . Schwarzer Wald, Bodensee, Allgäu, Berchtesgadener Land, we loved it very much! And then all those beautiful castles of Lodewijk II AWESOME!! Several times we went on holiday to Germany and we still can not get enough!!!

Germany never leaves you Andrew. I was stationed there in the late 80's for 2 years and it became a part of me. I met my wife in 2012 and shared with her my love of Germany, and in 2018 we decided to go back and do a road trip after 30 years. She absolutely fell in love with Germany and we went back in 2019 for another road trip. We plan on going back later this year if Covid19 cooperates.

those hundreds of years old storage cellars were built in the ground because refridgerators respectively electrical power didn´t exist. For hundreds of years iceblocks were brought from the alpine glaciers and storaged in those cellars (also in ordinary cellars of ordinary buildings) during the warm seasons in order to have a low temperature enviroment to keep things fresh. Down there those iceblocks lasted for some weeks before they were melted down and you needed new ones. The deeper down those cellars were the longer lasted the ice. Even the ancient Romans did that already. That cave looks very likely to be an old escape tunnel of the castle but those were also used to attack the sieging enemy from the back...but back in those days the entrance would have been hidden for sure.

@bademeister That's not true: Pilsener Beer was invented by a *bavarian* brewer in 1842. But almost 100 years earlier, in 1745-46, the well-known architect Johann Michael Fischer already has built a beer cellar in my home village, which still stands. And the ice wasn't brought from alpine glaciers but was just sawed out of the frozen fish ponds nearby. It lasted through the whole year. www.fischerbaukunst.de/fbau.html

The cellars go up to 100m and more into the ground as a tunnel. They are there to store wine as they keep the same temperature all year long. In not wine growing areas they will be root cellars. hey, these rooms in the mountain are intended as a basement and also as a shelter. What is also interesting about Waldeck is that it was on the other side of the Schlossberg until the end of the 17th century.

OMG! I am SOOOOO sorry you won't be in Germany any more. We arrived late 2019 and didn't get settled in our new home (in Amberg) until it was about time for all the borders to be closed. Although we still have not started traveling as we expected to be by now, I have finally started my blog about "Living and Loving Europe by way of Germany" for which you have been an inspiration even before we left the states to come here. I will still be directing readers to your KZbin channel because it's so awesome. I adore all your footage, but more than anything I love how much YOU love Germany! Your closing comments on this video were heartfelt...........I'm wishing you the very best in Portland. Thanks for giving so many of us such incredible views of Germany!

Thank you for this beautiful and heartwarming video and showing this fairly unknown side of my home. Most people focus on big cities and nightlife (and there's nothing wrong with that). But it is refreshing to see how you enjoy those sides that most would overlook. The countryside has so much to offer and it really took me living abroad to finally notice that.

Hello Andrew - the catacombs beneath the castle and through the forest hill must be a secret passage that was used in old times. They used it to escape from the castle or enter it without being seen or caught by enemies during war times - the entrance normally was hidden, too! Best regards Tanja

Andrew, this video really opened my eyes to seeing things in a different light. I have been going to Nursing school for 2 years, recently things didnt work out and I found myself having to close the door on that dream. Now my husband and I need a little change and decided to look for jobs in Germany and live abroad for a while. I'm hoping we get lucky and have a chance to live there. Where one door closes, one opens! Thanks for reminding that things sometimes happen for a reason.

Thank you for this awesome video of my home country. Germany means Heimatgefuehl for me which describes the emotion of feeling at home. Our child says where we live at the moment is our home (Zuhause) but the real home is Germany (Heimat). By the way one can see that you are really sad about leaving Bavaria, the sadness shows in your eyes. Hopefully one day you get a chance to come back for a couple of years or even get to retire in the Oberpfalz like an American friend of mine! Also some local TV stations are looking for staff in video and film production from time to time...OTV is one of them..good luck in Portland, good luck with your video production career!
