The moleskine weekly was my ride or die for a solid 7 (8?) years...until March of last year. Nothing changed, the paper was the same, my pen was the same, but it just stopped working for me. And it really threw me off!! I went back and forth for a solid month trying to figure out what to do and ultimately adapted to my Hobonichi weeks (it was my first year with one and was originally using it to track health/fitness stuff) but sometimes I still miss parts of the moleskine. I'm back in the Hobo weeks this year (and somehow seem to have dodged the bad paper bullet, so far at least!) but all that to say- so much love and grace to you as you figure this out. Everyone, and I mean EVERYONE, has a "thing" or maybe many "things" that if they were to change suddenly or without notice, would be upsetting and throw them for a loop. Maybe it's not planners and paper for them, but I guarantee that they have something like that. If people have a hard time seeing you walk through this, they can keep moving. Being vulnerable on the internet is so hard and can also be so rewarding. I, for one, really appreciate your transparency and recommendations (I found Jenika's Journals because of you and OMG- LOVE). Chin up, shoulders back, eyes ahead, deep breath! You got this.

First of all, THANK YOU so much for your words of encouragement. This weekend was ROUGH for me. I see lots of videos, planner and not, that the creator or the content isn’t for me, and I simply stop the video and move on. I don’t even take the time to leave a 👎🏻. I know I’ve bounced a bit (but who doesn’t?!) and was so happy to finally find my peace with carrying the Weeks daily AND having it be my keeper of memories. So yeah, this was a freak out moment the last couple of weeks. I noticed that most of the negativity came from first time commenters. So maybe they don’t know me. I’m REAL, and a regular viewer knows that. Nothing manufactured. If I’m dramatic it’s because I’m feeling dramatic. If I’m peaceful it’s because I’m feeling peaceful. I try to be real and raw. No scrips, I just pour out what’s in my heart. So yeah, to have hurtful comments lobbed at me and to insinuate I’m making up a situation for views is insulting to someone who walks with integrity daily. I’m so happy that you are finding your way in the Weeks, and I’ve decided to try and stumble along, maybe just maybe because a comment told me to “do the world a favor and never use a Hobonichi Weeks again” and also because I think I’ll be sad if I don’t have it on my shelf at the end of the year. It’s not bringing me joy yet, but maybe I’ll find the combo. Maybe one day you’ll find yourself back in the Moleskine, and at the very least you know where to go for a cover for it! I have multiple “things” that bother me for sure, but I’ve never tried to say I’m not extra. 😂 Thank you again for your kindness, you have no idea how much I needed it.

I detoxed from planners when my life fell apart. 2024 I used a Hobo MegaWeeks. Have extra pages . Now I'm using a 2 dollar dated planner. Have muji, TN passport, standard and regular notebooks. Cannot journal bad things in life, I couldn't. So I write what I hope for.

I divorced myself from the planner community, put my planners away and used my phone for my appointments - planner detox. Surprise, that worked! I needed a strategy to cope with my to dos (future planning). So a bullet journal wasn't for me. So I switched to a daily Moleskine Planner (B6 I guess). A chunky Boi (and I really don't like the bleed-thru paper!)... Now I'm in a pocket Malden with ugly daily inserts. No decoration, just functionality. That's less toxic than all the stress with millions of planner-options. How much money I spent the last couple of years is INSANE... Sometimes it's better to let everything go and don't make a big deal out of the planner-thing. Good luck!

I’m so happy for you! That’s where I *was* until the new Weeks. I’ve thought a lot lately about leaving social media entirely as far as planners go, but then someone tells me how much seeing my struggles and wins has helped them. I absolutely adore the pocket Malden and really hope I can scale back down again to that size (well, pocket plus). I do agree that less is more. Enjoy!

You literally spoke what my whole self has felt and recently gone through! I spent so so much and agonized over digital planning past few years and now recently going back to pen and paper because the digital planning felt so stressful, I got a ton for myself because I was just looking for something perfect. Two Hobonichi cousins and the paper started to lift from the binding and then Hemlock and Oak is my latest in a minimal weekly planner and I could care less if it works or not because this is it! I do and have always enjoy some light planning with a family of four it does help a little. I was sucked in to a ton because I’m a mom and work full time and don’t have a hobby currently so I have been looking for a creative outlet but I’m done! I’m keeping a little journal at home in case I want to document or focus on anything, my weekly planner comes with me to work and such and if I’m out then I use my phone. I’m just over it all

Sam, I want you to know that you are not alone. My planner (s) are also more to me than just planners. I understand your situation. You know what doesn’t help in my own opinion?…it’s all the planning influencers who have a “planner stack” a mile high. ❤ having one planner is my goal too. I currently am testing out a Leuchtturm1917 as a BUJO, a weeks mega, a Hobo a6 English original, a classic sized happy planner and a mini happy planner. I am narrowing things down slowly.
@samplans14 күн бұрын
I could never handle that many planners. 😅 Multiple books can make sense, like I keep a notebook at church for sermon notes, but that isn’t a planner. I definitely don’t feel “less than” having one planner, but the stacks seem to get the views! I see them out there but don’t watch…gives me anxiety just thinking about it!

Im using two hobonichi weeks this year and a commit 30 (journaling). I just played around with different pens and highlighters until i found a combination that works in the weeks. Im very happy with my system right now. It seems like you've found something that will work for you.
@samplans12 күн бұрын
I hope to do that but goodness it took me forever to find this pen combo! Enjoy yours!
@donnam27697 күн бұрын
What works, in your opinion, for the pen/highlighter?
@nereidagomez2 күн бұрын
@donnam2769 for the weeks that I have I use gel pens for the brand zebra sarasa dry and write on. The only "highlighters/markers" that worked were the tombow dual brush pens. I'm actually not a fan of them but I'm getting used to them. I'm trying to look at it in a fun way. If I purchase pens or markers that don't work on the weeks I don't get upset because I know that I can use them in other things I have like my journal. My zip color dot pens also seem to work ok. Of course there is shadowing but no bleed through so I'm ok with that. I should note that I don't highlight right away I write everything down then wait a little bit because it will smear. That's just how gel pens are no matter what kind of paper you use. I've always used the zebra sarasa dry pens so I'm happy that I found a way to use them. But I would suggest to do your own pen test because every planner doesn't seem to be the same. I hope this helps 😁
@norabolger968314 күн бұрын
I’m confused, why wouldn’t you use the Uni Jetstream in your weeks? There’s no bleedthrough at all with that ballpoint pen, it was made for that paper!
@samplans14 күн бұрын
I don’t like the way I write in the Weeks with that pen, I’ve tried!
@alexialira383914 күн бұрын
I don't get it either. She was also complaining about minor bleed through in the weeks, but says she's OK with minor bleed through now in the rings paper 🤷♀️ That said, imo this video just sounded like "cope"....her trying to convince herself she's OK with the new choices. I say this with good intentions and in general...it's not good or normal to have stress and anxiety over choosing a planner or journal....defeats the purpose of a planner/journal which is supposed to help us keep track of things...any paper and ink will do that. I'm convinced many (not all) viewers and youtubers in the planner community suffer from mental health issues....where they overspend, overthink, stress, then create excuses for buying a bunch of planners and stickers. Viewers and youtubers then egg each other on in their "addiction." Some think it's funny or cute. Sure, some youtubers do it for the money and to promote their stores (stickers, own planners) bc without viewers' addictions they don't get $$$, but a good chunk just has unresolved issues, in my opinion.

Oh, bummer! I’ve had good success with the RSVP ballpoint pens, even in the new TRP paper, which is so different this year.
@juneseghni13 күн бұрын
@alexialira3839 I think the same, all the anxiety over 'spoiling' the page or not doing it 'right' in the Hobonichi world. Same in Bujo which really only needs a pen and paper. What ought to be a helpful tool becomes just another problem.
@samplans13 күн бұрын
Maybe you haven’t listened. It’s fine for you to “not get it” but I’ve explained all of these things that you’ve listed to be points against me. My Weeks is a memory keeper for me. Rings pages are not something I generally keep. So if there is bleed through on a rings insert it doesn’t really matter. I’ve also been very open about anxiety, depression and a traumatic childhood. For you to sum all of that up and insinuate that I’m here to be “egged on” for views or dollars is hurtful and insulting. I’m a real person, with real feelings and struggles. This video wasn’t about “coping” or convincing myself I was okay with choices. I share my struggles and wins authentically, and if you knew me in real life you’d know how very much that means to me. It’s comments like this that make people like me not want to share.

I wish the makers of TRP planners would switch to 68 gsm. I switched my work planner to Take a Note, and the paper is so much nicer. Yes, it’s a little thicker but it’s worth it to have better paper and more options for pens.

I use digital planners (Haus of Planners 2025 one) in Goodnotes, so paper issues don't affect me. But the amount of time that we spend in our planners means that if something is winding us up every time we pick it up, we have to change it! Good luck in your new any-pen-goes set up.

I have this rule that I can buy any planner to use for the year, I can even buy alternatives to check or try out, but once I settle into a planner, I'm in it for the year. It's mainly because I have small kids and a full time job so backplanning is just not reasonable, plus my brain is so scattered, I absolutely need my whole year in a book. And I could go into a whole litany why that needs to be a bound book.🤷♀️ Sooooo, this year I'm sticking it out in my faulty Tomoe River planner, luckily I've found a pen to work in it. The reason I'm saying all this is that I totally get what you mean. I'm also hypersensitive (what people call particular lol) and that's precisely why I set this rule a few years ago to avoid confusion and heartbreak. As long as I know there's no choice to make during the year, I can focus on planning instead of looking for options. As I said though, luckily I hate rings, so there's none of that too tempt me.😊

I wonder if hobonichi will fix the paper issue next year. I heard the paper was a bad batch for some people. I haven’t started in my 2025 hobonichi yet because my sterling ink a6 horizontal came which is replacing a hobonichi weeks. Little wider and more space. I have used pencil in last year’s hobonichi a6. I was fine with pencil. But people really like their favorite pens. I’ve also used a .3-.5 erasable Frixion pen which helps me write better in the small grid. I haven’t seen bleeding either. I don’t know if these comments are at all helpful. I have decided that my preference is hobonichi even over Sterling ink which I do like too. I’m glad she made the print darker this year which is important to me. I feel bad for you because you love the weeks so much. I love the uniqueness of the week’s covers but didn’t get one this year. I struggle with the small narrow space and no grid on the left. So tor me a sterling ink weeks would be a better choice since there are grids on the left although using a pencil board does help keep the writing straight. I opted for a travelers size N1 monthly booklet for my travelers notebook and an a6 monthly booklet for my purse. I think the planner community has gone a little crazy with all the choices. But some people like their stack of books for their different needs and there is nothing wrong with that either. Going forward next year I do like hobonichi the best. I think for me an a5 and an a6 for on the go is good for me. I hope you find your sweet spot again. We don’t know until we try out the actual book we are going to be working in. Good luck on your journey. Let’s hope hobonichi addresses the paper issue.

I’m glad I didn’t buy any Hobonichi planners for 2025 and I’m sorry for everyone affected by the bad batch of paper! Since my own planning/journalling system didn’t survive 2024 (no internal reason, just a change to a full-time job with less time that also requires me to use a different set of technical tools and skills than before-I ended up not being drawn to planning/journalling *at all* for about half a year or so), I decided on a whim to use the PaperTess Designs Pocket notebook. When I saw your system, I actually laughed because I realized that what I’m doing now is very similar to it: Mostly, I plan in the weeklies and journal in the dailies, but I also told myself that if I need a To-Do list, I’m just going to use the dailies for that purpose. Also: Month on two pages; undated monthly overviews on one page that I designated for forward-planning (Jul-Dec; it’s a half-year planner). By the way, the cover I’m using is the one you once designed for Chic Sparrow and I love it a lot! 💜 Wishing you good luck that the system you’re using now will stick around for a while!

I have been in it since the last week of November 2024 and just THIS week did I feel like I am finally accepting the paper (although I still think the paper sucks lol) Or maybe I just got one of the "bad batch" because my goodness my Clean Color Dot marker went right through! I’m loving my sterling ink for work - I think I got the L1 horizontal - so bigger than the weeks which I need - the grid on the left hand size is a game changer and it just feels so clean without all the hobonichi quirks which I know you said you like ❤ still using my weeks for my personal on the go… had wanted it to be pretty but time hasn’t allowed, so - functional messy it is. For memory keeping, using the sterling ink - forget what it’s called but it’s the one like the cousin, just no dates on the back pages. I also have the midori hibino which I would love so so much if it was a5 size 😫 havent used it yet but the intent is to use it just for ME - all about Marcy 😂 journal, etc… we’ll see. Although while I was watching this, I went to Amazon and put the moleskine a5 daily soft cover in my cart. Why do I need it, idk - I just WANT IT okay? 😂🤦🏻♀️

Look at you with the planner lineup!! I had put a SI in my cart, but left. Maybe next year? And YES!! You need that Moleskine. 😅😅

I loved seeing you set up your Hobonichi for 2025 when I did. My seventh year in it. So sad 😢 When did you fall out of love with the Frixion? I always found it the partner for the Weeks. Xx
@samplans12 күн бұрын
I will add the Frixion to my list of pens to test again. I’m going to try to keep attempting in the background because I don’t want to regret not trying. I’ll let you guys know if something clicks!

While watching this I noticed another video pop up on my feed!! Jennifer Harvey has just created a personal size notebook with Tomoe River paper and a 5mm grid!!! AAAAAGGGHHH!! 😄😄
@samplans13 күн бұрын
That’s a good grid size. 😊

Did you try contacting Hobonichi?
@lkessler114 күн бұрын
Hobonichi semi addressed the issue (not very well). The paper issue is wide spread, other planner companies who use this paper are experiencing the same issue, so it’s not really a Hobonichi issue, but a paper issue.
@slothmode0814 күн бұрын
@ ahh.. thanks for letting us know. I ended up switching to just using ballpoint pen so I don’t have an issue. 0.5 gel point pen seems to do okay as well. Hope they fix the issue next year !
@lkessler113 күн бұрын
@ it’s unfortunate, it will be interesting to see if it truly was just a bad batch of paper, or if this is the new norm for the Sanzen paper. I too use ballpoint mainly, but I do enjoy fountain pens, so I’m just figuring out which inks will work and which I’ll have to use in other journals with thicker paper.

I haven’t but I’m pretty sure they were only replacing certain lines of planners.

I despise rings. I quit using them in the 90s. I knew you were a rings fan. I don’t like or need to move pages around and I don’t want to figure out how to archive all those loose papers. Too fiddly and stressful. So your rings actually wigs me out a little bit. But it is your planner and you have to do what’s best for you. I’m just saying I have a visceral negative reaction to rings planners.
@samplans13 күн бұрын
I don’t plan to archive the loose pages, that’s why I transfer the more important/meaningful to my memory keeper. Rings is just a place to dump the things out of my head onto paper. To each their own.

I love you Sam! I totally relate to your thoughts so much! I found myself over analyzing my planners and everything for years! I’m not sure what clicked for me but I’ve been in discs and actually content somehow. I told myself like “okay, don’t overthink it, you like it now use it and be happy” 😂😂
@samplans14 күн бұрын
Aww, I’m so happy you found discs to be “the one”. And I love you back. 🫶🏻

I couldn't believe all the "switch your pen" comments on the last video. I received a Hobo Cousin that is from the "bad batch." I purchased the techo to use fountain pens and ink in, but over half of the inks I own bleed horribly on this paper. So people telling you to change pens infuriated me. This will be my first and probably last year in a Hobo. I am very disappointed after spending all last year wishing I had a Hobo. 😡 I am glad you've found, hopefully, planner(s) that work for you. As for me, I will spend the rest of this year hating my choices and the brand that has let me down.

I’m so sorry your Hobo was part of the bad batch too! I’m proud of you for sticking it out, that’s exactly what my husband would do. My husband saw those comments and was like, they must be new here. 😅
@NonprofitAce13 күн бұрын
@@samplans I am new too, but I totally get not wanting to change your writing tools. I have a 2023 notebook by Hobonichi and I love it and expected the same quality out of my Cousin. I am too stubborn to admit defeat. I will stick it out...but not happily 😩 I just ordered a bunch of ink samples, so here's to hoping some work in my planner 🤞At least DeAtramentis Document Black does not bleed, so there's one 😅

I hope something you ordered works perfectly!

I have never seen anyone as stressed over a planner as you are. I am happy for you that a planner is the thing in life that you struggle with this much because things could be so much worse. You are blessed. Here's wishing you planner peace
@samplans14 күн бұрын
Hmm. Not sure if that was a criticism? We are all different. You have no idea how difficult my life has actually been. Some highlights would be abuse and murder. But thanks for pointing out how easy my life must be because I share planner struggles. PS- I was in the same and only planner last year for 8 solid months.
@midlifeinprogress14 күн бұрын
Wow... this was a very passive-aggressive comment. Do you even know her, to know how "much worse" her life is? Some empathy would be nicer.

If you don't care for the video, why not just move on and dispense with the mean comment. Not cool!
