If you go by her clothing and the accent she tries to put on, I think the female lead character is actually from a feudal high-class of Tibeto-Nepali origin.

This is a really good drama. Because of the ending. No it's not happy, in fact it's painfully tragic, and that's why it's good. The lead male is an a**. He selfish, greedy, and overly ambitious. He's willing to kill thousands for power and hurt whoever is in his way, especially the woman he claims to love. I love that there is no redemption for him and that the lead female doesn't suffer needlessly. She knows exactly why she ends up the way she did. I love that it didn't change who either of them were. They were the same people at the end as they were at the beginning. He got all the power and she got a love story worthy of being told. And they both paid the price for it. One more than the other, but still. It's a cautionary tale. Do not let anybody in your circle just because they're cute, trust is to be earned. And you can't have everything when your willing to do anything to get it. That last scene with the two leads together was hardcore award winning acting.

I share the same thoughts. After everything, it couldn’t be a happy ending or I’ll lose a lot of respect for her. Even if they have stay together, there is just no way he could have make up for what he did to her family and clan. He sealed the fate of their relationship long before they got together.

I do agree that they don't belong together in that lifetime. But I disagree with him being selfish and greedy. His motivation from the beginning was revenge and he has been planning that since he was a child. Remember, he has to pretend to love the queen and the prime minister all his life and act "stupid" and lovesick with Sese in front of them while secretly plotting against them. He has been acting for so long that towards the end his feeling burst out in the most unhealthy way with his treatment towards Xiaofeng. He is so desperate in trying to hold on to her that he forgets he already lost her when he killed her family. I'm not justifying his actions but based on the beginning, of course he would put his mission above all else something that he planned since childhood. In a way, it is (sort of) admirable that he's not changing his plan for love. But yeah, he inadvertently made Xiaofeng as collateral damage. That's why I'm grateful for the bonus ending. Xiaofeng is firm with her principles and so does Chengyin which is why they couldn't be together in that lifetime although it was painful for the viewers. And for me, the TRUE villain of the story has to be his father. That man remained silent all his life despite knowing everything going on around him and I'm glad that he lost his woman and child as karma for him and it is deserving that Chengyin took his place and gave him his two cents.

@@tanvi4833 yeah, if you want to have your heart broken Into million pieces. But it's really beutifully done- the sets, the music, the costumes... The story is unforgetable and all of the actors did great job. This one is my 10/10.

About the sifu (teacher) part, I happened to read the novel. It's started with a bet, they're more of a friend... Who lost the bet should call the winner as teacher. She clearly lost 😁😀

Gosh you have no idea how much I've waited for you to do this! I've watched this but it seems like you got the new cut which has 55 eps. I watched the cut with 52 eps. And yeah Shawn Wei's character got shady in the last few eps. All I can say is this is the only cdrama aside from ROTP that I didn't skip a single episode so I really hope you'll watch this and do another review. As for Chengyin/Xiaowu's character, the actor who plays him did an excellent job imo. And Xiaofeng as helpless as she is, she isn't helplessly annoying like in Chronicles of Life. She has the right amount of charm that makes you want to jump into the drama and protect her yourself.

Yes, it seems like there are 2 different versions. Xiaofeng does seem like she has some inner strength, it'll be interesting to see how her story plays out :)

this was one of my first cdramas so i wasn't yet subjected to the many cliches and tropes of other cdramas in this genre. what i like most is how the male lead is written to be quite a terrible person, and the drama actually acknowledges it and shows that none of his actions, no matter what his true intentions are behind them, are forgivable in the end. when he treats the female leads terribly, he gets whats coming to him. when he decides to choose power and control over everything else, he loses everyone close to him. and the ending, wow. i don't think a lot of these cheesy cdramas nowadays would be ballsy enough to actually go through with what they did. or they would, but they'd have a deus ex machina or a cop out ending in which everything is suddenly fine and everyone lives due to unknown circumstances (aka bad writing). especially in the novel ending and the extra chapters, the man is SUFFERING on an indescribable level from what he did and it's both sad and well deserved.

Agreed, this drama does acknowledge the male lead's mistakes. That makes it more watchable than other dramas where mistakes are sold as romantic gestures instead and then the female leads get all the blame for "misunderstanding" her love interests :D

Lol you weren’t really clear at the end, will you continue to watch it or drop it? I’ll love to see this drama in a nutshell, strong character analysis and whatnot. I have so many good and bad things to say about this drama so I’ll be more interested in hearing your thoughts. Also, for two actors that don’t seem to have much experience, they did well very together. They seem to have play off each other well. *potential spoiler?* Indeed, the production value seems really good, I mean, compare to Legend of the White Snake *cough*. One scene that I continuously gush over is when they find the awesome magical water; the special effects when they landed in the water was just so breathtaking and top with the intense music, just woah. FYI: I’m not talking about when they were free falling. No, the cgi there was terrible. Just terrible before the more awesome part shows up.

Person not the earlier commentator here. The water is real. Honestly the reasoning surrounding the water is pretty clunky and not explained particularly well. I also thought the beginning episodes felt pretty stereotypical. Still, I second the encouragement to finish the drama. The characters by the end are very well developed, the ending is satisfyingly thought out, and so many drama stereotypes about princess roles, obsessive but sympathetic male leads, and the nature of court politics get a refreshingly mature take.

Gotta hand it to the actors, especially the guy who played the male lead - he could have been so easy to despise but in spite of all the horrible things he did, I still felt heartbroken that they couldn't defy their ill-fated ending.

I love this drama! From my interpretation, I believe that most of the characters in this drama actually did not develop much. Xiao Feng did mature a little bit, but not that much to the point where she's a different person. Her morals remained consistent, and I liked that about her. She can be immature at times, but she does also have a mature side (kind of like Yunxi in Legend of Yunxi). She understands that her actions can have an effect on other people around her. In conclusion, she is playful, but she is not illogical. She only interprets what is presented to her, and I believe that is pretty realistic. Meanwhile, Cheng Yin he has always been manipulative from beginning to end, and sadly, I think that is the most realistic way to present a manipulative and power-hungry person. And then the Teacher Gu Jian, well, he was always in the shadow. Other than trying to redeem his bad deeds and trying to make Xiao Feng fall in love with him, there really is nothing that changes with his character throughout this drama. If only this drama was like 30 episodes, I would rate it a 5/5 because I believe it could've been condensed. However, the drama was executed in a way where I can appreciate the characters and plot. Thus, I rate this drama a 4/5 stars.

I never liked Xiao Feng's immature character. Yes I know later on she progresses and gets some development and that she's supposed to be a teenager according to the novel but I still couldn't tolerate her childish behaviour. ( Note: The actress was great at her role ....I just didn't like the character ) 😆

same she irritated me the most especially near the ending by making the two guys fight and then acts innocent even tho she literally threw more fuel into the fire. She never truly matured in the whole show...The main guy was way more mature and logical as must as he seemed cruel, thats the way war works...

In the beginning, she is quite young about 15 and also a spoiled princess whose only goal is to not to get married far off. I think her character did matured with the tragedies surrounding her. Its true that she has no control over her life whatsoever. And male leads use her like ping pong except in the climax where she finally takes her life in her own hands. Maybe that's what makes this show more tragic. That teacher guy is really quite annoying as oftentimes he tries to take a higher moral ground while he is equally responsible for what happened.

Those were the reasons why I watched it until the end. Xiao feng was unbearable for me. I was 100 times close to drop this because of her childish and irresponsible behaviour. (It's not the type of FL I enjoy watching at all)

She had some moments, but I found them tame compared to other dramas. If you ever feel like cringing so hard your face is in danger of permanent creasing, watch Truth or Dare. I couldn’t make it past two episodes. So many tantrums and pouts. 🙄

I would have enjoyed this drama a lot more, since I LOVE tragedies, if they only haven't dragged out the drama. A lot of parts didn't make sense to me and some felt so unrealitic to me. Maybe it's because of my irk for piggybacks. This drama has tons even when the FL could walk perfectly fine. The 2nd male lead didn't piss me off as much till he asked a dumb question, a person with a guilty conscience should never ever ask. But he made it up by the end of it. But nonetheless, I REALLY enjoyed this drama: the tragedy, acting, Peng Xiaoran's pretty face, the women, the costumes, and the supporting characters's stories.

This was an okay drama I guess. I really enjoyed the beginning until the second arc. Was so sad. I kind of got tired of the middle portion and just went ahead to watch the last episode. I think the actors that played the main leads did an awesome job. I consistently hated the Shifu all through the drama. I felt the story was determined to redeem him and make him this awesome second lead but it just came off wrong and hypocritical to me. I never really have strong negative reactions towards characters but this shifu I could not stand.

This show...this SHOW...I did not like it. End of story. The cinematography was amazing and the maim leads acted well. However, like in Ming Dynasty, the male lead was... and other things. I watched it with a title of Princess of Eastern Palace so...thanks to all those Who told me about the other English title halfway through that I realized Goodbye my Princess and this drama...were the same drama. Uh oh.

ThankQ, finally someone who agreed w/ me .. I think the only character that shouldered the entire drama was the main lead n he definitely didn't deserve that ending. Her character (for the theme) was just too selfish going w/ suicide after all that had happened n her final 'moving' speech where she convinced the face off (her bro, ML n even the opposing armies), but what does she do!!? PFFFT !! Takes the easy way out - couldn't stand her character n the 'teachers' character .. only watched bc the ML was *EXCELLENT!*

I don't like the plot or idea of the writer because, he/she let the viewers think that the ending is "love is forgiveness", but in the end, it is a sad and a tragic story...readers like to watch stories with a happy ending. Because today, there are so many corruption in our government, that's why for a change, stories should be at least for a time, can be more of a fantasy or rather, inspirational for all the lovers that, experience poor life.....
