Goodbye our beautiful sweet Barney Boy RIP

I am so sorry to be sharing this news with you all. Yesterday, moments after I posted our last video, a unique freak accident occurred and our dear sweet beautiful and perfect in every way Barney Boy, Deputy sheriff of the farm sustained an injury that he tragically could not survive.
Running fast and free with his siblings as he always does, he turned to look at them and ran into the fence. Not even head on, along the side of the fence but on impact immediately shattered his spine and was paralysed.
If it was any other dog they would have simply shook it off. He was immediately rushed to Sash the emergency hospital, a surgeon was called in for the weekend to operate. But, sadly after scans, they found his spine had shattered and all internal organs from his shoulders down were damaged and bleeding beyond repair.
Barney was born with a deformity in his back and lower end that meant he didn’t develop a tail, he needed two surgeries as a puppy to survive. Which he did. But this last scan showed that his spine had now bridged and was so brittle that the impact shattered it into many pieces.
This is such a tragic freak accident, the doctors didn’t even believe us initially and wanted to treat for snake or tick, luckily I had seen it happen with my own eyes and we had the footage from our security cameras to show them the impact/accident so that they could immediately give Barney the pain medication to make him at least a little comfortable while they assessed him properly. They said if we hadn’t shown them that and they continued with the snake/tick scenario he would have died a very painful death, we are very grateful this was not the case.
In a very short period of time we were told that he needed to be humanely put to sleep. They could not get him stable and he could not even come home with us to go to sleep there, he wouldn’t survive the trip.
We were all there when Barney passed. He was surrounded by so much love. The kids, most especially Elle who had a special connection with Barney. He would follow her around all the time, when she was off doing her thinking walks, he was right behind her with every turn. Elle is absolutely heartbroken.
We all are. To say that our hearts are broken feels like the biggest understatement. Life just doesn’t feel the same. We don’t know what to do. Elle has not got out of bed today.
All the dogs said goodbye when Luke buried Barney on the bank watching over our backyard forevermore. Each one calmly came up and said good bye, Freddo gave his cheeky side kick one last lick in the ear.
Barney boy. You were undoubtably the sweetest boy that we could have had the honour and privilege of being able to be your family. You have touched our lives in the very short time you had here like no other dog. Always the cheeky, playful, happy, brave, loving boy.
Having had to spend the first 6 months of his life in and out of hospital and in a pram not being able to socialise, when he arrived at the farm as that cute little 6 month puppy he played from the second he got here right up until his last moments here. He crammed a lifetime of play and love and social shenanigans into these almost two years of living here at the farm.
He injected himself into absolutely everything the farm is about. Well except swimming, nope, not his thing. But he loved the pack life, he loved having so many brothers and sisters to play making up for all the lost time. He loved the bush runs and paddock runs with his pack. He loved the family life. He LOVED the children. Cutie pie and Maggie were very special to him. He looked up to the big guy Freddo and dreamt of being deputy to his sheriff. We told him he was.
He even had a sibling that was his pyjama brother, never feeling different at all in this pack of misfits he was proud to call his family.
Barney, nothing was every too hard buddy, you made our life better and we feel so grateful to have you in our life despite how short it has been.
We are grateful that we feel you had the time of your life here at the farm and that you knew you were loved everyday. We feel this unique family situation was your ultimate dream life. You showed us that you felt that way, every day.
I’m sorry everyone, I know how much you all loved Barney too. He was so very special.
Barney run free in heaven. One day we will meet again. Until then, we will be thinking of you everyday.

Of course sweet little Barney boy is there - but so is this giant overall reminder that there is joy and love left in the world. Barney is in a happy place now where he doesn't hurt, doesn't worry about nappies, and has lots of friends from the farm to play with. I’m crying my eyes out while I cuddle my sweet little schnuppy. Broken hearted for all of you, especially Elle. You saved Barney and gave him a life that was the closest to heaven on earth for such a sweet-faced boy. Given his tragic genetic condition he could never have become an elderly dog. It was only a matter of time. But in that extended time that your diligent care and hard work gave him, he was full of joy and completely seized each moment. Dear Elle…when I lost my little Snooper Boy I was so very sad. I wrote a letter to him. I told him how much I loved him. I put down in writing all the memories we had together. I did this everyday and it helped me with my sadness. I put this book in a very special place. My little Snooper will help Barney and I know they will be great friends. I did the same and ended up with a book (not published, but my own special tribute) I would clear my mind and write words to her and then wrote words that seemed to be coming back from her. It didn't take away the pain of losing Jess but it did help my grieving process. One day as I wrote, (words from her) this is eerily true, she says, "dear human mummy, there is a man here at rainbow bridge who has come to collect his dogs and a cat. He has a melodic voice" that day I switched on the radio, and heard that David Bowie, an avid animal lover, had just died....I still get goosebumps when I think, my furbaby really was communicating from rainbow bridge, daily, trying to heal my broken heart. Even when they get their wings, they are still by our side ❤

Silly accidents with dogs happen every day, but something like this, like Sam said any other dog would have shook it off. The heart just aches for them, especially Elle. He was her tag-along buddy, always by her side. I have an 11 year young pit bull, lab and probably many other breeds all rolled into my wonderful Bailey Girl, my Princess. Tonight I hugged her a little longer and a little harder. She has slowed down as expected, but Barney Boy, with his perpetual puppy face, it breaks my heart. Sam while I was reading your message I am heartbroken crying so hard for our Deputy Barney Boy and then watching video of him with kids I choked up and can’t think what to write. I'm relieved that all of the four-footed family members were able to say goodbye to Barney, too. Since we don't have words to explain to them what happened seeing Barney's body and being able to sniff Barney to have an understanding is paramount for them. Dearest Sam, Luke, Elle, Evie and Wolfie - first of all Sam, thank you for your wonderful words about our Barney Boy and for sharing this dreadful news with us. You will miss him, we will miss him, as will his pack, but you will forever hold him in your hearts with joyful, boxer bouncy love. Thank you dear Sam, Luke, Elle, Evie and Wolfie for allowing those of us whose lives have been touched by beautiful Barney to also say “farewell” to him. Our tears have mingled with yours as we together with you, try to adjust to the suddenness of what has happened and our hearts ache for you. I remember the day Barney arrived at the Farm, still very much a puppy, overloaded with enthusiasm as Boxers are, and not at all impeded by his difficult first months of life. It was as if he knew he had only a short time to accomplish all he desired. He lived life to the fullest, adored his human family, sussed out kindred spirits amongst his fur brothers, found his hero in Freddo and determined to emulate him and became a self-appointed deputy, and became known, loved, continually commented on, impacted and brought joy and laughter to thousands of people all around this planet we call earth. All that within a few short years. Dear Barney, you’ve left a legacy of memories that will be commented on for years to come amongst your grieving family at the Farm who knew you intimately and amongst us, your grieving world wide family, who never had that pleasure, but none the less loved you for the beautiful character who brought us so much joy as we watched you on the videos living life to the fullest. I haven’t watched you guys in awhile, but I remember when you guys first decided to keep Barney because the rescue was having a hard time finding someone to adopt him. In all the videos I saw with him he was always so happy and I think he really thought he was in heaven on Earth. You guys are so amazing for what you do every day and I am so so grateful that you share your every day adventures. You inspire others to adopt and rescue and it’s amazing. Barney was such a good dog and I hope you guys know that you were the best home for him after all. Please give Elle lots of hugs from all of us and let the dogs give her lots of kisses. They’re with us for such a short time but for them it’s a long time and I know Barney loved every second of it.

I’m sure that many will agree that we all fell in love with Barney the first moment we laid eyes on him. He was beautiful and obviously very loved and very cherished and would not be where he was if he hadn’t been brought to the farm at six months of age! In a short period of time, he lived a full and wonderful life. In that same short period of time we all fell deeper in love with him, Deputy Barney❤️ I’m sure it wasn’t easy to write those words that you did Sam, but thank you for detailing the circumstances so that we all understood. I tried writing this yesterday, but I found it too hard. I loved Barney Boy, he had a hard start in life, but as soon as Luke took his lead off, he ran around as if to say "free at last'😢. He just loved the farm and his human family. He loved his pack and as a good deputy, he also tried to keep them in check, but he sure had fun with Maggie. When I first saw the word Goodbye, I immediately thought Tilly had a turn for the worse. I never imagined it would be another one, especially a young dog as Barney! I am so, so sorry. My heart breaks for all of you that you've lost Barney... such a beautiful boy. Only last Friday 15th Dec, i helped my boy Jett cross over the rainbow bridge.. i held him close, kissed his face, told him how much i love him and it was ok to sleep... then he was gone.
