If they have to shut down Scarborough RT why is Vancouver SkyTrain which is the same technology as this is still running?

The Toronto demonstration was just that - a demonstration of the technology that only Vancouver, Detroit and Kuala Lumpur purchased. The RT was never supposed to be a permanent project, and was never intended to run as long as it did. As a result, the TTC never took the line seriously. The province forced the line on the TTC, and the TTC never had the backbone to say no and keep the original streetcar plan for Scarborough.

What a scam. I drove the first Scarborough RT as a TTC employee in 1984. Total scam shut down. Billions involved.

The biggest white elephant - and both the TTC and the Province are to blame. It was a demonstration line that should have stayed a streetcar. The billions in overrun costs to fix the deficiencies along the line, the poor engineering, all to sell it as an intermediate solution - and only wound up being bought by three cities. A total joke and Scarborough got shafted - again.

So our miles of transit lines _just went down,_ right when we need so many more, so badly. This shows two things: (1) That we should build subways and subways only, not these dinky little above-ground lines. (2) Just how unserious the Toronto, Ontario and federal governments are about transit.

There's nothing "dinky" about above-ground lines. The SRT works well in environments more suitable, such as Vancouver. It does not perform well in the winter, combined with lack of expansion and modernization, Line 3 languished. We can't afford to only build subways and nothing else; you'll just complain about higher taxes. Thank you for proving you know 0% about rapid transit.

@@EVIL-C No, I wouldn't complain about higher taxes. Thanks for proving you know 0% about me. And I've heard the arguments against subways before. For one thing, they don't take account of the likelihood that greater Toronto is headed for a population of 10 million. We'll be sorry if we don't build a lot of them. And if the Scarborough RT were a subway, it wouldn't be closing. Yeah, great money-saver.

Yup, just like the Eglinton LRT. Give it 20 years before that line gets outdated and starts to be inefficient in supporting the population

Scarborough RT was opened since 1985 and now in 2023 Farewell Scarborough RT, Hello line 2 subway 🚇 going all the way to Sheppard-McCowan in 2030
