The two things that take the most time are A) Bureaucracy, politics, and funding; and B) Tunnels. If we just started approving a new elevated or at grade project every couple of years, in time they would start opening all the time. This would probably be more GTA scale then Toronto scale. Build GO-ALRT automated metros to connect the region.

I found it interesting that you said this new subway should help Toronto transition from a “cars” to mass transit. When I lived in Toronto from the 1950’s until 1972 it never even crossed my mind to purchase a car. I could go anywhere, any time of day or night and there was always a streetcar or subway to take me there. In fact, my shift at CP Rail ended at 12 midnight and it was a piece of cake getting back home. It wasn’t until moving out of Toronto that I was forced to buy a car so I could get around.

There were actually some big issues with the Copenhagen Metro trains when they were brand new. In 2003, many trains were delayed, doors falling apart from the train, they suddenly started to drive backwards and the security wasn't safe. Luckily everything has been fixed, but yeah, that's Hitachi Rail's first metro project

When the trains were originally delivered, they were made by the Italian company AnsaldoBreda - the same company that caused the IC4 fiasco, the FYRA fiasco, and the fiasco with streetcars for Gothenburg. They really weren't good at building trains in general. The company was bought up by the Japanese company Hitachi (changing name to Hitachi Rail Italy), and since then the quality has gone up significantly.

AnsaldoBreda was also partially responsible for our lousy Type 8 light rail vehicles in the Boston area. They are terribly unreliable (even from when they were new), and they derailed frequently until the wheel and rail profiles were reground (and even so, they still occasionally derail). AnsaldoBreda is now Hitachi Rail Italy -- I wonder if that will finally fix their problems, or if they will corrupt the rest of Hitachi?
@railotaku
@railotaku Жыл бұрын
@@andrewreynolds4949 That was the Japan Plant which produced the shells (UK) and kits (Italy) - My understanding is it was a poor choice of Alloy, along with data about track quality supplied by Network Rail not matching reality so forces experienced were far higher then what the spec called for. With great pressure to reduce weight being part of the spec, any overengineering just in case wasn't going to happen. I've seen allegations that Italian sets were beating the Newton Aycliffe sets for quality.

Video idea: Railway Nationalization explained. There are currently unprecedented challenges facing freight and passenger rail in the US right now. Would love to hear your take on the concept, and also how it works around the world and might work in North America
@andrewreynolds4949
@andrewreynolds4949 Жыл бұрын
European railways have been moving away from the nationalized model in recent years. There have been issues pointed out with a sort of "closed-mindedness" in many of the nationalized operators, where they optimize things for their internal uses and where they are most likely to find local political support. This has led to poor compatibility between rail systems, and makes international travel difficult in all but a few trunk routes. Issues with the half-nationalized British system have meant that projects are way too susceptible to changing political dynamics. Considering passenger rail currently is nationalized in most of North America... The US freight system has mostly done fairly well in recent decades, and since it's run by private companies rather than a government with some amount of transparency obligations, it's far more common to hear about the bad stuff than the good stuff. Unfortunately that's how the news works here, one accident gets a lot more attention than a signal modernization or local track doubling project. There are a lot of issues right now but they're not unfixable, if the people involved aren't stubborn, greedy, or negligent idiots. That's not something that would go away if government took over the rail industry (in fact I think it would exacerbate it). There is some historical record for drastic changes in management system making things worse, for example the formation of BR in 1948. Because of rapidly shifting political tides rather than building a system that could recover from WW2 and sustain resilient traffic, first new steam locomotives were built then scrapped at a huge loss of design life (and thus cost-efficiency), but were replaced by diesels with insufficient technology development behind them (thus constant breakdowns and other issues). The huge waste of resources this created led to political pressure which meant the rail network was stripped to the bone. Yes BR eventually recovered, but the huge change is what caused those problems of that magnitude in the first place.

Congrats on your new Ontario Line - hopefully your provincial government gets you involved in some way like how TfL lets Geoff Marshall in for sneak peaks. 02:20 California HSR made a huge mistake when they decide to begin with the nearly flat central valley section. Now the opening date of the Pacheco Pass Tunnels would be that for any useful services. In China, the good practice is to alway work on the longest bridges and tunnels first. Such sections usually get special environmental review under the name of "key, controlling construction", so that they can break ground several years earlier.

The Ontario Line ends at Exhibition Place. There will be bus connections with 29 Dufferin and 63 Ossington, though the 47 Lansdowne bus could be extended via Jameson Avenue and Lake Shore Blvd. into Exhibition Place. There could be another connection using the streetcar tracks from Dundas West Station along Dundas Street West, if they could install streetcar tracks along Dufferin Street south of Dundas Street West to connection with the Exhibition Station. This streetcar route could run "express" along Dufferin Street into Exhibition Place, leaving the 29 Dufferin bus to provide local service.

Are you planning to make a video on the athens metro like at all? There is a new expansion of it coming soon (2028 is soon in greece), and there are all kinds of transit services in athens. There is also the Thessaloniki metro, which is still under construction but planned to work by 2023, and it will be a light metro as well.

Reece, a little off topic. I agree with line 4 Sheppard subway should be extended westward from Yonge Sheppard subway station to Sheppard West station on the York Spadina line. Higher priority than line 6 Finch West LRT going east to Finch station. Glad that Ontario line has a contract for building it.

Rapid transit powered by overhead wire is not unheard of in the United States. The Cleveland RTA Red Line does it along all of its trackage, and the MBTA Blue Line (Boston and near-shore points northeast) does it from Maverick Square Station or Airport Station in East Boston and all points northeast (the third rail from the old East Boston Tunnel extends to Airport Station and the overhead wire from outside/northeast extends into Maverick Square Station, so trains have overlapping options in case something is wrong with one of them).

The downtown relief line is sorely needed and while I'm glad it will make commuting in/out of the core easier, I still have concerns about Metrolinx seeing through its integration with outlying areas of the City of Toronto, specifically in Etobicoke and Scarborough. The recent news about Metrolinx not having a real end date on when the Eglinton LRT will be "officially" done was disappointing (I can't say it's a surprise lol), as well as its ballooning budget. Many of these areas esp in the city's extreme NW and NE rely on buses only, and sometimes only one route that requires multiple bus transfers just to access the subway or an LRT. Until the promised transit conveniences extend to the whole city -- not just the core and its nearby neighbourhoods -- it will always look like an on-going, incomplete project. I'm still hopeful about transit in the city, but I also remember the promises about Toronto amalgamation in the 90's re: transit improving for everyone that have yet to be delivered. The city was let down by successive gov'ts at all levels over the years. The Ontario Line is a start. Let's hope they intend to build on it for the future.

It's all well and good (transit expansion) but reliability and affordability are still issues that the TTC still struggles with. Those issues should also be given priority if the city wants to move away from cars as the main transportation in the city.

Transit projects should be funded publically- we don't leave private companies to build roads, coz they'd suck at building and maintaining usesful services with profit as their primary motive. Transit IS NOT a competitive market, you don't get competition on a railway, therefore the free market cannot be applied to it in a reasonable way- privatization of our railways in the UK has been disasterous- services are less well connected, more expensive and see less investment, many lines were removed entirely. A good rail system needs to be funded by taxes.
@RMTransit
@RMTransit Жыл бұрын
It is funded by the public through tax dollars, as with basically every other transit project built everywhere construction companies compete to build and operate for a period of time - that ensures they don't build a bad project because they would be responsible for operating it!

@H5subway5707
@H5subway5707 Жыл бұрын
@@bmw803 None of Toronto's subways were meant to last longer than 30-35 years, and that includes the T1s & TRs. If the T1s were to last until 2040, then the H4s & H5s should've still been in service, yet they've been gone for a decade already (H4s lasted 37.5 years, a record for Toronto, but easily put to shame by New York; the H5s lasted a year less; H6s, only 28 years!). Since the T1s will be 35 by the end of this decade, it'll be the right time for them to go too.
