Goodbye Raspberry Pi

Hello Operators.
My raspberry pi journey started with the Ultimate Raspberry Pi build a couple of years ago. Since then, Linux and the Pi tutorial have remained regular features on the channel. Unfortunately, with high demand and uncertain availability, I may be saying goodbye to the Raspberry Pi, for my portable ham radio ops.
In this episode of the OH8STN ham radio, we are discussing replacing the raspberry pi 4, with the Microsoft Surface or some other tablet or laptop, as a portable ham radio computer for my Icom IC-705. Top of my list was a windows tablet or laptop like the Microsoft Surface. It would be used for WInlink, FT8, JS8Call, and other ham radio data modes which require capabilities, the Raspberry Pi 3 or 4 can't always provide. Let's take a look at the raspberry pi vs a windows tablet to see if we will be saying goodbye to the ultimate raspberry pi in the field, once and for all.

You hit the nail on the head. We need apps like wsjt-x and others developed for mobile operating systems. As an amateur like you who highly values reduced station complexity, increased station reliability/performance and flexibility, I’d be willing to put my money where my mouth is. Let’s get these developers paid and keep advancing our hobby.

Agreed. This is an area we desperately need to invest development into to simplify our emcomms / prepper rigs. I've been a Microsoft professional for 40 years now, and I highly recommend moving away from it to Linux, Android, or Chromebook OS whereever possible. Unfortunately, with digital HAM radio, it's just not quite viable yet.

I am very interested in picking up a Surface Go 2. I was before Julian created any videos on them. 🤪 This video says it all - clearly and concisely. All very valid points - all delivered with substantive support. I use Windows, macOS, iOS, Android, and Linux. For me, it is and always has been about using what runs the applications I need and what makes me the most effective/efficient with the task at hand. The biggest challenge here is people that wrote off Microsoft years ago and don’t give things another chance. Microsoft has become one of the worlds leading security companies (laugh if you want) and are focused on ensuring interoperability with non-Windows based systems. Windows 10 may not be ideal due to Microsoft’s upgrade strategy, but it’s an excellent operating system. I just switched from Windows 10 to Windows 11 and am VERY impressed with the changes. The ability to take my 705 and a Windows tablet (with antenna and battery/solar) and nothing else - man that’s just KILLER! Thanks for another awesome video Julian! You’re amazing!

I am glad you made this video. I have had this argument that a raspberry setup is too fiddly to be practical. Especially when trying to minimize the amount of gear you carry into the field.

Julian, I am a student of your teachings here on KZbin. Your videos are very informative and well done in regard to editing and content. I have the 705 and a Surface Pro 5 and the configuration doesn’t get any simpler, especially when using the wireless capabilities of the radio. While it’s true that this setup requires the purchase of Icom’s RSBA1 v2 software, the trade-off is not needing to purchase the extra hardware and cabling that is required for the Pi. The RSBA1 software also allows me to remotely control my other Icom radios, so for me it was a good investment. On another note, I live in Iowa and Seth at PowerFilm has some great things to say about you. 👍

Thanks, Julian, this is excellent. I own several Pi's and they're fine for what they are, but I really prefer an all-in-one computer for field work for the reasons you mention: simplicity, reliability and performance. I was gifted a GPD Pocket 2 mini laptop and it works extremely well for my needs in the field with my Xiego G90. The Surface Go 2 is surprisingly affordable, and if my current solution fails, I'll consider the Surface as an alternative.

I have 25 years of experience in building Linux-based solutions and have always used it or OSX (now MacOS) over Windows as a workstation. Objectively, I reached your same conclusion a few days before you released this video - although I recommend an ARM-based Surface for better battery life. I prefer the better display and keyboard of their higher-end Surface models, but that is a trade-off for weight.

Excellent video, Julian. Thank you. I went through some of the same thought process recently, and decided on an Android system. I’m going to run WOAD for Winlink to start, and figure out the rest later. But between the cost and weight, I thought this was the best combo for my situation. I haven’t tested it out yet as I’m still collecting parts (the last package should be delivered in a couple of weeks), but I’m pretty sure I can get everything working satisfactorily for my situation. I had researched the surface go 2 because I had seen you use it. I have owned other surface devices before, but this one is really great for on the go use. I was able to purchase/finance it on AT&T and get it with LTE coverage. Now that I am not editing on the road, I was able to get something other than an i7. Thanks for the great videos! KN4SHQ 73.

Hi Julian, thanks for another useful comparison of equipment. I go with you a long time and I have also done some experiments with RasPi's. The cablemess as well as the non-compatibility with VARA made me switch over to a WIN10 2_in_1 convertible together with my IC-705. Actual an old Acer 10" does the job for nearly a year. Only 2 gb ram and 1,1GHz clock - it works, but sometimes its a pain. Both can be field charged by a 5V= USB or a USB-C PD charger from a LiFePo4 or a solar panel. Maybe a Surface Go 2 will be the successor. But protected by an UAG case and a non-glossy screen protector. 73

Thanks Julian. Simple is the key for off grid and emergency comms, and just like I skipped the slide rule and duck-and-cover, I'm happy I skipped the Raspberry Pi. If it ever rises to the top, I'd like to see you review digital modes for 144MHz VHF at some point, whether it be text, scanned forms or photographs as this subject is coming up in our county RACES meetings. HF is not always reliable for near-field digital comms whether it be solar flare, antenna orientation, NVIS refusing to cooperate or ground wave blockage...all of which I've witnessed in our extremely hilly and gorge-cut local terrain.

Awesome, timely video! I took a very old laptop up into Northern Maine with my Yaseu FT-991a to run some portable ops, mostly Winlink emails home to family with our camping adventures. The battery is toast in that old laptop and it quickly drained my LiFePO4, solar could barely keep up. I was thinking that I needed to get a newer laptop and my brother recommended buying the Surface Book Pro. The first version would be cheaper as people started clammering Surface Book Pro 3 or the used 2's that would inevitably hit the market. I found an i7 with 16 GB of RAM, and am excited by the battery capacity - both the screen and its keyboard base have a battery and it lasts a full day of basic data entry and web browsing. I, too, can't knock the Pi. I help maintain several GBPQ32 packet nodes running on 3B+'s. I thought about using a Pi Zero as a smart radio interface, but you're right about power and accessories. And I want to be able to document and demonstrate how to access data modes and packet radio nodes for our less-technically savvy operators in our local clubs. Windows and a sound modem connected to a sound interface is absolutely the simplest way to go.

Since I've been a Ham for abt 54 years, I may be past the point where I want to play with my Raspberry Pi 3 B V1.2 any longer. I used to do packet radio before I got interested in satellite coms. I kinda dropped out of Ham Radio when I got a job (MITLL) that was almost exactly like my Ham Radio hobby! Since I've retired from the lab about 10 years ago, my Ham operating has been mostly using 70cm to chat with my wife(Ham) while she's out in her Kayak. I've always been interested in Weak Signal Portable, so when I saw the QDX kit and watched a presentation on JS8Call, I knew it was time to get back into Hamming. Your video has sold me on the idea of using a Laptop with the QDX transceiver. Besides the tiny rig & laptop, all I'll need is a USB cable, good Battery, smaller antenna tuner & some antenna wire. :) Plus maybe some kind of GPS dongle, if the PC doesn't have GPS. Can the hot-spot on a cell phone provide the time to a laptop? :) Seems like it might..

I am quite impressed with the SURFACE GO 2. Does all of the digital modes very well connectedto my IC-7100, but what really makes it stand out is its ability to charge effectively with a USB-C PD charger with as little as 7.5 watts. Yes that means you can effectively charge from the cigarette lighter! I was able to ditch the very lossy inverter that was was consuming more than 100 watts to make AC power to then be converted back to 20v DC. This is a game changer when operating on solar power!

Thanks for posting this, Julian. I am also a Linux and RPi enthusiast, but I've come to the same conclusions particularly for portable operations; although solving all the problems is fun, there is just too much integration work required by the end user to make a Pi-based system as viable as an already packaged Win-based tablet or laptop. I enjoy satellite operations, and while full-manual roving works well and eliminates a lot of points of failure, when I want some station automation, a Windows-based system running SatPC32 (and WSJT if I'm trying FT4 on RS44 or AO-109) is easily integrated (single USB cable to an IC9700) vs all the pieces required for a Pi-based system. Visibility in sunlight is a real problem too many systems, so I'll be looking at your and other Surface reviews for that aspect in particular. Thanks and 73 de KS1G

Thanks for this comment and feedback. If I were you, I would look at the Panasonic Toughbook for satellite work for the daylight readable display. They're pretty reasonably priced on the used Market. I took the hit on the display because I'm usually deploying from within a shelter. If you're operating in direct sunlight, Toughbook is definitely the way to go. 73 Julian oh8stn

Thanks Steve. With the Icom ic-705 and the Surface tablet, it takes about 3 minutes to get on air if using a rapid deployment antenna. For the other radios I leave the audio and Cat control interface connected, so there's only one wire to connect to the tablet. We really have come a long way. Thanks for the kindness and feedback. Awesome video Julian...up here in AK, those of us doing field communication exercises came to the same conclusions you mention in this VLOG. I agree, Raspberry Pi's are a lot of fun to tinker with, but to rely on them under field conditions (especially up here in the sub arctic) is a failure just waiting to happen. I picked up a used, used/rebuilt Panasonic Toughbook (Military tough...waterproof, dust proof, SSD HD and tough as nails) that is proving to be an outstanding addition to my home and field stations. Although it's a lot bigger than the Surface Go...1200 NIT and 8 hours of battery life on one battery (and I have two) allows it to work for me. Keep up the great work and content! Cheers and 73

Thanks Chip. It's often difficult for others to understand the extremes we operate in. The Raspberry Pi has worked, but hasn't been easy or cost-effective getting it to that point. Hopefully we can Inspire others to give other options a go. I'll keep my eyes out for a used Toughbook. Which model are you using?

@@OH8STN I have the Panasonic ToughBook 31 Max that I purchased from OC Rugged Laptops. It came fully refurbished and looked like new when I received it. They also gave me a two year waranty (which indicated to me that they actually went through it.) It came with a clean copy of WIN10. They installed an SSD drive. I was amazed how fast it is, especially using the APPS I want for Ham Radio. I bought a second HD Caddy off Amazon and a second SSD HD and loaded up Linux Mint. Its super fast and easy to swap out HDs for the two operating systems I use. Back in the day, these laptops were $4-5K new. I am very pleased with mine.

Julian, another great, informative video! I found a rugged computer that I have been using for Amateur Radio: The Zebra Xplore B10. They are definitely mil-rated, and seem to be very durable as well. They even have a keyboard available, and can boot Ubuntu. I don’t know if you can get them at your QTH, but have a look at the specs… I think you’ll be impressed.

Nothing is mil-rated unless it's bought as surplus from the military itself. Everything else is "designed to spec" but there are no such testing labs for civilian gear that can certify it as such. It's just marketing jargon.

Great advice, Julian. I recently dusted off my Surface Pro 4 and started using it for FT8 on my x6100 and IC-705. I like the soluation alot, and I am not a Windows hater, but I also like the RPi OS. My only complaint about the Surface right now is that the battery is starting to fade. Do you know if the Surface Go 2 has the same type of charging connection as the Pro 4? I'd be interested to see what charging options you recommend in the field that can bypass the 120v adapter that it comes with.

Thanks for the comment. The Surface Go 2/3 use the Surface Connect port for charging. I use a 12v/USB-C PD adapter for off grid charging. It may be possible to charge with its USB-C PD port, but I'll have to test that. Thanks for all the videos you make that hold all of this information! I just grabbed a 705 and had to make a second trip to buy the remote control software. Have you found a way to activate the transmit from the surface pro using VOX or a Bluetooth button of some kind that can be bound to a key press ? Thanks

I look at the Raspberry Pi as a swiss army knife. Can you slice cheese with a swiss army knife? Yes, of course, but if that's all you wanted to do, a $4.00 kmart kitchen knife would to a better job. However the kmart knife won't be able to saw, open bottles and cans, file metal, etc... let alone fold away into your pocket or a small survival kit. I love the Pi because of its flexible nature, price, size, and the extensive support eco-system that surrounds it. If you want to run digital modes in the field, you're probably better off with a second hand laptop, like an old lenovo, where the display, battery and keyboard are all packaged together. Pi will always have a place in my shack, though for more specialised applications, particularly those that run in headless mode.

Excellent presentation Julian. I've been worried about my Pi being the weak link in my manpack rig ever since I had a MicroSD card failure which sent me back to square one. I think the only reason I'm using it now is so I have a Windows-independent system on hand, but you are convincing me to make a second manpack, one more reliable and with a less complex and fragile configuration. I like my Panasonic Toughbook, CF-C2, which has integral GPS with my Xiegu G90. I sandbox the TB from Windows auto update, and the internet in general. A physical WIFI switch is handy. So many choices!

All my radio ops are portable. I have 2 pi's configured for 2 different radios, and have a love hate relationship with them that leans primarily towards hate. Since I need another device to interact with the pi, why do I need the pi? I've been leaning towards a lightweight solution like the Go2. Great video as always Julian!

I'm still a huge fan of the pi for off grid. Can run for a LONG time on a cellphone recharge pack, I can Bluetooth my cell or tablet gps to the pi and I can make as many complete copies as necessary of the op sys on multiple SD cards, if anything is ever corrupted just insert a new SD card. Any tablet or phone can be a screen, so I never have to worry about a broken screen hampering my comms. It does suck that Vara doesn't work but for me, and my travels and options, the pi is perfect. It does what I need it to in a small package. The Surface is very nice but I'm pretty happy with the pi. It's pairing very nice with the TX500 Keep up the good work. 73 KF7VUT

Julian, I think the Microsoft Surface runs Arm64 instead of x86. I found difficulty getting the radio connected as Icom’s Drivers don’t work with Arm64. After researching I went directly to Silicon Labs and downloaded their driver and finally got the ICOM working. Did you run into any issues?

Great comparison - I'm very interested in this topic at the moment... I've been using a windows tablet in my portable operations for years now, and am now transitioning to a Raspberry Pi system. Why? The only reason is to achieve a lower power consumption. I've been out with it a few times now and it's been working great and the computer system is using 90% less power now. As for reliability, I don't see why the Pi couldn't be just as reliable as the tablet, possibly even more so as the tablet could be more fragile due to the form factor and large glass screen. There are a few aspects of the large tablet that I do miss like being able to type on the large screen keyboard easily and the size of the screen. I've got an idea, why not bring both, one for a backup system!

Actually if we're only running things like ft8, js8, or the modes included with fldigi, we can do it with a Raspberry Pi. Then the capable winlink client and Vara hf are missing. At the back of the machine, why not Raspberry Pi. As the primary machine, it would have to be an all-in-one solution for me. Let's see what the future brings on the channel ;-)

I have a Pi w DRAWS hat and don't use it. Let me down too many times and is too complicated when it comes to config and troubleshooting not to mention the wealth/ease/availability of software and ease of install. One point I don't agree with is your comment about unreliable microSD cards. In years of using them in Pi for ASL BPQ etc I have never had a single problem. I always use the best cards. Thank You for Your very informative videos. As someone who simply cannot afford to pay hundreds for modern radios and new equipment I have to use the old gear I have access to. This means analogue radios with No CAT control which makes using most digi modes awkward at best. FT8call is the easiest to use on old radios and VaraC is sadly not really workable. Winlink + VaraHF appears to go but I have failed to make it work on air after several days of pfaffing about, especially annoying as I rely on old 65W solar panel with Pb and SLA batteries for power. It would be most excellent if You could maybe look at possible off-grid tactical comms using older manually operated radios without CAT control. I am sure I will not be the only one struggling to use digital modes with old gear when power and commercial networks & internet are down (this happens here several times every winter) JS8call seems to be the only workable option so far but I hope there are ways to get other asynchronous comms modes like Winlink & VaraHF to work in an emergency situation. Your experience and any thoughts You have on ways to utilize older equipment would be much appreciated. Currently using SSB voice, FT8 and JS8call with FT-707(S) and a partially restored TS-130S with 100W PA bypassed giving me 8 to 10W RF output so it can be used within UK foundation license 10W power limitation. 73 de Paul, MM7WAB

Julian, concerning the Microsoft Surface Go 2 - Pentium Gold that your using. As near as I can see it has a processor speed of 1.7 Ghz. in the specs that I've found. I have the Icom RS-BA2 v2 software and it states that it needs a minimum of 1.8 Ghz or higher processor CPU. You've apparently got it working quite well with a little less than minimum of processor speed. Or am I missing something here? Hi I know this is several years old but I'm intrigued just the same! Other than this one of my goals is to separate this from the. internet using software that don't require it. My question is have you used the x6100 in this same setup using the surface go 2 even all the updates to the x6100. I feel that during ham radio operations the internet should not play a role. in its success or failure. The reason behind this is I live in Florida where power and internet access always seem to fail during hurricane season.

Hello. The XGGComms is an excellent audio interface. I still use it routinely at home. The problem is the cables and compatibility with a multitude of radios. I moved over to a Surface Pro 6 last fall, before I found out about the Surface Go series. My only concern with the Surface Go is the 4GB of ram and 64GB of storage. Windows is a memory hog, hence I would go with the 8GB version of the Go. Also, I would love to see more about the Digirig Mobile. This is the first time I've seen this solution and am looking forward to see more content solution.

I agree less is really more in portable data communications. I just wish more development was out there for something other than a PC if only for much better battery life. I know windows tablets are offering ARM processor SOCs to improve battery life. To me the least about of complexity and lowest power usage to get the message Across is the point. This is a great topic. Unfortunately devisive, but that means it is good to talk about it. I am on board with the idea of simple deployments, although I have not reached a stage where I am happy with my own approach. Thanks for introducing the new digi interface, I ordered one. I have two issues gnawing at me, the lesser one being Windows. I understand why you use it in this context, but I will avoid it myself. The issue bothering me most is Vara HF. I get it that it's awesome in operation, but the fact that it's got a high sticker price and isn't OSS (or at least an open standard) means that it divides the haves from the have nots. It is my opinion that emergency protocols should be based on open standards as the lowest common denominator. Proprietary software won't ever be part of my own kit-bag, because it exists at the whim of corporations or businesses with boardroom politics behind closed doors. There are two versions of Surface Go, one with GPS, another without. If you have a 705, no need for GPS on Surface. Bottom line, user can choose what's best for themselves.

Yet again another great video! The only downside to the surface go2 with winlink is that winlink refuses to see the surface's built-in GPS. Even an external ublox gps will not work sadly enough (does not recognize the com port) So unfortunately we're stuck with using the IC-705 wired so that we can use the radio's GPS over USB

I haven't had the same experience. Winlink is definitely finicky about the GPS but it sees any GPS I plug into the tablet. I didn't get the 4GB surface go, so mine doesn't have a GPS built-in. I regret that. The next tablet I get will definitely have the built-in GPS.

@@OH8STN the surface GPS is only available through software, unfortunately microsoft has not made it available as a com port or even emulated it to a com port, so you can use it in their own maps software, but not much else.. I tried a ublox USB gps, winlink sees its com port, but is unable to use it. I'm guessing the com-port is also a sort of emulation and that that is what is throwing of winlink..

I’ve found my priorities have more or less aligned with The presentation here. The number one thing I care about is reliability. I always will plan for operating in the worst conditions possible. As such I need to know everything will work when I need it to work. No matter what system I use or software cost. I like my raspberry pi. However, I consider it more a computer for tinkering rather than operational. Reliability is a massive concern for me. I’ve ran into many times the image corrupts and refuses to boot. The only real way to get it set back up is via internet. Which I may not have. I like the idea If a small low power computer for digital communication. However, raspberry pi doesn’t fit my operating goals. Namely reliability in the worst conditions. I currently have windows 10 on a think pad laptop. But I would prefer to take something lighter and lower power portable. Also using IC-705 wirelessly is incredible! That level of simplification is truly game changing. To not even require a sound card interface or cat cables is truly magnificent. I like my signalink box more for sentimental reasons. But I’d prefer not to worry about a cable mess. Magloops are already enough of a hassle. The loop is why I don’t care about tuners though. So the exclusion of a tuner isn’t a deal breaker, because I don’t use it. I would like to see linux with the same software for ham radio that windows does. However, the reality is it doesn’t. I don’t like playing with wine (in fact I hate this program) or VMs. To run a virtual machine as well will reduce operational time due to increased power draw from cpu use. Complication I don’t want. I would also like to see such programs on Apple platforms such as a MacBook or iPad. Due to the ridiculous power efficiency of the apple silicon chip. I’ve clocked close to 20 hours on battery with an m1 air. However, unfortunately it suffers from the same problem as linux. Namely lack of support for the programs I need. Because of this amateur radio application will be on a strictly windows machine for me for now. Again I need this to work. I don’t need to tinker. Linux on a small laptop or surface talking directly to the IC-705 gets you the simplicity and reliability and is more in-line with Emergency Preparedness and Response values relating to open standards and interoperability. More so than an Android solution or a Windows 10 solution. Functionality-wise the main cost of rebuilding your current station to run Linux instead of Windows is losing Winlink VARA. The stop-gap is to run Winlink and VARA on wine on Linux. Longer-term develop a better Linux Winlink client and an open VARA-like protocol.

I agree with you 100%. Unfortunately there is no reliable Vara solution for wine. It's extremely difficult to configure and not very stable. I would actually prefer a Linux Ubuntu tablet or laptop. Quite frankly, the problem is with winlink development. It seems rather stuck in the Dark Ages.

android systems for radio would be excellent IMHO. I like this very very much. The nerd part of me wants to explore building a raspberry pi and system, but the 60 year old man says do you really want to invest the time to build an learn another operating system ? so this windows tablet is genius for portable ops ! One unit, easy connections and for me as a windows user for digital radio, usability/learning curve is a minimal time investment , i already know windows. This tablet new isnt all that expensive, very doable. Ihave 2 questions, that you may have already answered, its late/im tired please excuse me if you have answered already, tomorrow i will be back here. 1) use the laptop with the yaesu radios ? i dont know these radios, i use a yaesu ft1200, takes 2 cables to run with windows laptop, i assume it would be the same. 2) power consumption of the windows tablet, compared to laptop and and raspberry pi. A laptop would be hard to sustain for a mobile camp like i see in your videos, i think. You had good success in the field with the pi and radio using the solar charger and 10ah battery. My limited experience with android tablets is they use alot of power as well. An educated guess would be 50% of a laptop. I reckon the only way to know for sure is field use/experiment. I'm right there with you. I don't like running Windows, I don't want to run Windows but so far it's better in every respect than the Raspberry Pi for field communications. Every time the Raspberry Pi comes out to the field with me, this anxiety lingers over me whether it's going to work or not. If not the Raspberry Pi failing, some component cable or configuration the setup is Reliant upon. It's nerve-wracking. I spent thousands of hours fielding the Raspberry Pi. It's great for ft8 from a park activation. It's ridiculously terrible for off grid HF email.

Yeah, the RPi is a bit of a pain in the ass. For instance, I'm trying to power mine with a Powerworks 5V adapter connected to a LiFePO battery, same one as my G90. The RPi always gripes about low voltage. I've been getting CAT control errors in JS8Call when running with flrig and connecting with a Digirig (even when NOT transmitting, so it's not RFI). Trying to find out where those errors are arising will be difficult, but I suspect it is RPi-related.

I should make a video on this, because I probably know the portable power problem with your Raspberry Pi. If you look at the post on my blog about off-grid power for the Microsoft Surface, there's a USB C power delivery adapter that's used to power the surface. I suspect the powedwerx adapter is rebranded Chinese crap. I've gone through quite a few of them and they've all been junk. How are you Raspberry Pi 4 with a USB C PD adapter the same one I use for the Microsoft Surface. That should solve your portable power problems for the Raspberry Pi.

I'm now certain that the Powerworks 5V adapater is the cause of my CAT control errors. I powered the RPi using a power adapter plugged into a wall socket last night and had no CAT control errors.

Still not a fan of winlink though. I would rather be internet independent. Will stick to JS8 and some other modes. Also would rather cable than run bluetooth or wifi. Great video aganin Julian. But this is one of the very rare videos where I have a different point of view. A Windows computer is great if you are in a shack. Access to internet, updates, backups. But out in the filed you are lost when Windows starts to behave strange. And sooner or later, all Windows systems start to behave strange :-) Personally I find it much safer to carry 2 RPIs with 4 identical SD Cards. My mobile phone is always with me and most of the time my Samsung Active Tab3 also. So I have a display backup too. Windows is very comfortable and easy to use, but if it fails out in the filed you are lost. And carying two Surface Go 2 is much more expensive that carrying two RPIs :-) Just my point of view. 73, Stephan. DF6PA PS. Hello Stephan. It's definitely okay to disagree but perhaps you missed the functionality the Raspberry Pi lacks versus the Windows machine!? My Surface tablet is only used for ham radio applications and almost never connected to the internet. It gets its updates once a month from over the home network and never connected directly to the internet itself. It's been nine months without a single issue. Full backups are done every few days and easy to restore if Windows has a problem. There have been zero Hardware problems with the Surface tablet. I wish that were true with a Raspberry Pi. Another problem with a Raspberry Pi is Pat winlink. What takes me 20 minutes with Pat and ARDOP, takes me less than five minutes with Vara and winlink express. We have very few ardop gateways and zero packet gateways up here. Running low power, it takes a long time to find that ardop gateway. I've carried the Redundant raspberry pies to the field previously. When there's a failure, you get the hardware back up and running, but the databases are all gone. WL Emails on the surface are backed up several times daily. We can't easily do that with the Raspberry Pi. Anyway like I said it's okay to disagree. It's probably because we have different goals in amateur radio. At home the Raspberry Pi is fine. In the fields though, at this latitude, with this sparse population, it's much more complicated to use the Raspberry Pi man portable Nana Windows tablet or laptop. Think about what I'm trying to achieve and how I operate. Not what you're trying to achieve and applying that to how I operate. Anyway it's always good to hear from you. 73 Julian oh8stn

I would but there's no HF communications on WOAD. Just packet. V/UHF packet range is a no-go in sparsely populated Northern latitudes. The 705 can definitely be used as a Time source for the Raspberry Pi and I do so. It still leaves the power source, rugged enclosure,... The Raspberry Pi is still great on the desktop and connected to the internet.

Definitely having a windows machine will give several advantages over the RPi - including ease of use, the UI, and the plug-in-play capabilities, etc. Accessibility to the tools you need, will definitely be available in more popular OSes like windows. You can even argue that a Mac laptop is easier to use and to program than a RPi. So why use a RPi? The biggest advantage is its price-performance. Hands down, you can't beat the price and its performance. The RPi is very inexpensive, especially when it's used. Furthermore, with a low cost Fire tablet to run VNC, it will cost much less than a windows machine. But the biggest questions is - Is the RPi reliable? In most cases, I think so. Sure, everyone knows that setting up a RPi is challenging and with a slight code error, it can ruin your deployment. Especially when you're in an emergency communication situation, you need reliability equipment - and you are right. On the other hand you learn a lot more on the process on how digital communications work between a radio and computer. Using a RPi, I learned about GPS and how that helps in timing, I've learned about serial drivers on how that communicates with the radio, I've learned about remote logins, managing power supplies, an better appreciation on how an app communicates with the radio, learning more on radio settings and how they apply to digital communications, but most of all the RPi ecosystem has other features that you might explore in the far future. Sure, RPi has limitations Overall, if you don't have the budget for a windows machine, you want to further your understanding of subsystems that give you a better appreciation of how the hardware works, plus a sense of accomplishment that you can communicate with folks for pennies - then you should consider the RPi.

You had me for a while but then started down that rabbit hole. Couple of points here. Would you ask a policeman, fireman, paramedic, or first responder to understand how the underlying subsystems work? For emergency communications and preparedness, we want the systems to simply "work". There's nothing wrong with initial configuration however, expecting someone in the field to delve deeper into subsystems which are unnecessarily complicated (because Raspberry Pi OS) is unreasonable to ask. I could say the same thing about a DXpedition using a Raspberry Pi for logging or actively running ft8. You're off in some Faraway place fiddling with a Raspberry Pi to get it working after a fail. There's no internet access and all the scripts you need to reinstall your software are dependent upon the internet. What do we do then? The Raspberry Pi was designed specifically to operate on the grid. It does an extremely good job in that environment. It can even be a desktop replacement for many things. As far as cost versus performance, no chance! The Raspberry Pi still requires a bucket of add-ons to make it functional in the field. It needs a power supply, it needs a screen keyboard and mouse. GPS, RTC, audio interface, backup sdcards, soft switch, enclosure, heatsink, ... Add them all up and comment the cost. Even with all that stuff, it's still struggles to run a vnc server in the background while offering up apps in real-time. It can do one thing at a time and do that very well. I don't hate the Raspberry Pi, but do understand its limitations. Used Windows machine would be a much better investment. Even a Chromebook running Linux, would be a much better investment.

Thanks I think 😂 The pragmatic digital modes JS8, VarAC, ION2G, Winlink are very interesting for me. Just exchanging sigrep like FT8, gets boring fairly quick. The 705 makes data modes simple, but also provides amazing tools for SSB, CW, ... If nothing else, it will/should trigger Elecraft and Yaesu to step up. Thanks for watching and commenting. How does Digirig mobile work compared to xggcomms box?

Haven't seen much of a performance difference yet, though the XGGComms is larger. The digirig is much smaller, perhaps even a quarter of the size. That's the big takeaway from it. Both are excellent in my opinion.

Julian, perhaps you glossed too quickly over the reliability aspect of the computer. While I would certainly agree that one can acquire a rugged Windows computer, think Panasonic ToughBook, do you really consider the Microsoft Surface to have the sort of military-grade toughness that makes it suitable for deployment in extreme environments such as frozen tundra or the Seria desert? Wouldn't it be great if we had a computer with the rugged construction of the Lab 599? My personal opinion is that we have a long way to go before we start to get close to an ideal field combination for digital communications. Thank you for pioneering the way for all of us! DE WA1KLI

Honestly John, I completely agree with you. I would love a Panasonic Toughbook but also work within the constraints of my load capacity and budget. The goal of this video is to inspire other people to think outside the box, keep moving forward so to speak. I would love to see one of the Panasonic Toughbook coupled with any of the radios mentioned in this video. Awesome feedback👍👍👍

Just a quick follow-up. The reliability in question was about the raspberry pi reliability, in the field. So even though the Surfacevis not a Military grade machine, it does have better reliability/survivability than the raspberry pi used before it. It is all abot baby steps. If I had the ability to throw money at a problem without a thought, I wouldn't learn anything from the process.

@@luiswu9892 what you feel or believe doesn't matter! Testing matters! Thousands of hours of field testing. 9 months with the Surface in the field without a failure. Believe what you want about a raspberry pi. They are great on the desktop, but have a high failure rate in the field.

The surface laptop has more ports the tablet only has the one and I agree with you no. 2 USB ports would be adequate.

I'm not as experienced of a ham as you, but I've got IT/Tech chops. I think the big "missing" in your new approach is that you've lost serviceability. While, yes, an all-in-one solution such as the Surface reduces complexity in operations and setup, if something goes *wrong* you don't have the ability to service it in the field or come up with a field expedient replacement. For example, if you drop your Surface and break its screen, you're out of luck. With your old pi solution, if you drop your display you can borrow someone else's phone, grab a pre-paid phone from a convenience store, or whatever. If you accidentally break your USB port, you stand a chance of saving it with some judicious soldering on the pi. On your Surface you need a heat gun, spudgers, and a full electronics tool kit, and preferably a hot air rework station. In good times, not the end of the world. In the end of the world, not good times...

You probably mean well so I'll try to keep my emotions out of my reply. The Raspberry Pi isn't stable. It is also reliant upon a bunch of different components all working together when off-grid and disconnected from the internet. If I accidentally break the screen on my tablet, I use my phone and backup Raspberry Pi which is in my go kit. If I break the USB port so I might tablet, I connect wirelessly to my radio as normally done anyway. I understand where you're coming from however, the Raspberry Pi is not serviceable. There's zero chance we're going to carry the equipment to the service a Raspberry Pi or any other portable computer system in the field. The Raspberry Pi is as difficult to repair in the field as anything else. The difference is, I can add a rugged tablet to my kit rather than the surface go. A Panasonic Toughbook for example. Anyway it's still easier to protect the screen of my tablet, then deal with the plethora of unique components required to field the Raspberry Pi. The Raspberry Pi Is Awesome on a desktop. It's even awesome portable for non-critical communications. Still, it's not an easy thing to set up, configure, and operate when it's -20 outside. Thousands of hours of field testing. That's the point! I didn't just think this crap up one day without testing. Thousands of hours of field testing.

If you drop your Surface and break its screen, you can still do anything an RPI can do. Surface has cross-platform apps like Unified Remote that can act as a remote screen and keyboard.

Can you sub in an android tablet instea? I'd prefer to focus in around a usb c charger rather then the surface tablet charger. I've used them at work and I am not a fan of the surface line of devices. Supporting them as an IT person has soured me on them

The surface has both. You can use the surface connect or the USB C to charge. Anyway the problem with Android is there are no apps. We have one windlink app in very early stages it's called wind link on Android devices. There's also an ft8 client for android. There are a few older apps for rtty and psk as well. If those are enough for you, then the Android devices might be workable. I've been running this surface for over a year and a half now, without any issues.
