Love the channel. Very happy you have decided to push ahead with YT videos despite the aholes out there creating problems for your channel. At your next port of call, find a hardware store. You need to buy a pair of wire strippers, a pair of wire cutters, wire connector crimpers, and a handheld butane torch for heating shrink wrap tubing. Oh, and buy a package of various diameters of heat shrink tubing, buy a large box of various types of wiring connectors. You are looking for a box of connectors with mainly red, yellow and blue sized connectors. Each color represents a different diameters of wire connector. Buy a 3 pack of electrical tape. Get rid of that liquid stuff before you burn your boat down. Buy a package of zip ties of various lengths. You can use these to neatly bundle wires together. Buy a basic multimeter. They require batteries. I've always had one that requires a 9V battery, those are square ones. Find a medium sized plastic toolbox to keep all of these things in one place, including the box of various wire connectors. Lastly, find a descent bookstore and buy a book about basic wiring. After buying all the tools and the book, go back to your boat, hit the books and learn about how to properly fix wires that have had their insulation rub through, and how to fix them correctly. Now fix the recent repairs you made to the generators wiring box before someone gets electrocuted, or the boat catches fire. Or ask a fellow cruiser to show you how to do these kinds of electrical repairs, correctly. Have fun.

On the generator, the thing you called a resistor is a diode. Probably used as a filter to prevent static on the radio, or some noise reduction for gen. instruments. Resistors will have colored stripes to label the value of resistance. The grey band on the diode is to mark polarity. So electric flows in one direction.
@WaldoKitty
@WaldoKitty Жыл бұрын
remember changing the "spark suppressor" aka "noise filter" on distributors with the contact points... those are capacitors... a diode's main function is, as you noted, to keep the power flowing in one direction only... with four diodes, you can turn AC into (rippled) DC... that's known as a bridge rectifier... add a few more components and you can smooth the DC a lot more...

I cannot stress enough that you need to "know" what your connecting to where electrically...and worse case scenario is way worse than it just not working...ie...electrical fire at sea=worst-case scenario.

You need to get a couple of RV filters on the incoming water when you fill. Especially a carbon filter to remove Chlorine from land based water supplies. If you rinse your water maker's membranes with Chlorinated water they will fail. Get a couple of waterproof Baofeng radios. You can use them as marriage savers with headphones and you can even get waterproof/resistant ones for around 35 dollars. VHF and Ham radio models. You can also talk to each other over miles of water.

Hey guys! Just wanna say how much I enjoy following along with you adventures! I really enjoy the effort you guys put into the videos and sharing your experiences with us!!! Coming from an avionics tech (also a charter pilot) but two tips to hopefully make soldering in the future easier is heat the wire first then apply solder to the wire which is know as “tinning the wires” then solder them together. Also, stagger your solder joints, strip a little extra insulation in the cable ends and aim to have the joints not able to contact each other when the cable is pulled taught, then when you shrink tube each individual joint. Especially in a wet salt environment it will help A Ton!!! Again, you guys rock!!!

You need to open up the drag on that reel. The fish should be able to run without breaking the line. Given your boat speed I bet you are losing fish on the handlines as well. The drag is there to give the fish the chance to run without yanking the hook out or breaking the line.
@pkane5472

Suggestion about hand fishing line, have a leather finger guard for your first finger, a big fish will apply enough force to cut your skin. Gloves are not a good option. Also winding a line under a lot of tension onto a reel can cause the reel to split when the line dries( some new types of line don’t shrink). My brother in law was a tug driver and they would always troll with a thin stainless or braided synthetic line ( breaking strain 150 kg+ ) for easy retrieval and where you get small fish there will be larger fish. Some of the mackerel and tuna fish can be eaten raw by soaking small cubes in vinegar with a bit of chilli and soy sauce theses should be bled as soon as they are caught. I use to always wear a knife at sea, I don’t know what the modern ideas are but if you are working a boat with lines ( fishing or sailing ) especially in rough seas a knife is a good safety device! Fair winds!

Hi guys, I suggest some gloves when hand fishing, if there is a sudden jerk on the line, it can cut into your hands which will suck. If you dont have also get a lip gripper which is tied off to the boat to ensure you never lose a good one. Hope you start catching the fish destined to match your culinary expectations! 🎉

Tried clicking on your link for the knife. Norton flagged it as a known dangerous web site and would not allow me to continue. Good Job on the generator, and good luck with the wiring on the microphone. If you have the wiring schematic for the raidio they will usually show you the original wire color and show you what pin number it was attached to. It will probably show you the mic end connector as well. Hopefully you get it all sorted out. It takes time but you can do it. Loved the extra footage at the end and was excited that you are now catching fish.

I love the adventures you're sharing with us. I EE binged this past week while vacationing. I watched EE01 to EE99 and I can't wait for the next one to come out. Brett, the bluish-green stuff you see on the radio mic connector is copper oxide formed from salt air corroding the contacts. You can usually get more life out of the contacts by burnishing the inside of the them with a tiny piece of fine sandpaper, or a small file. Also, you should be able to separate the individual parts of the mic connector to reveal the manufacturer name and product code on the inner part that contains the contacts. With this information, you should be able to order new contacts and connectors. Happy New Year to both of you.

As an electrician when a circuit breaker trips you get one free close attempt. If it trips again there is a fault. breakers rarely fail. with the breaker open. check that is no voltage AC and DC on the load side. Then use the ohm meter function of your multimeter to check the line to ground. If it is less than 1 ohm you probably have a short to ground.

when checking long pinouts you can use the boats ground as your other lead. i.e. put one pin to ground from the connection to the radio side of the cable. Then check the other end of the cable to ground with your meter at the destination. This way you will not need a long extra wire. Not sure i explained that well enough. But it was how i checked very long runs in a factory.

Or, you soldered all the wires together at the exact same position and length. Unless you are going to have them covered by heatshrink or some other very good insulation, then all you need is a pin hole for them to short out. It's best to stagger the length as much as possible and ensure they are individually insulated. Not sure if you did this, because you didn't show it.
