Wayne LaPierre has finally resigned. Now we need the Borad of Directors to purge the organization of his dedicated followers and choose a new Leader who will take the organization in a new direction.

I have been a NRA life member since 1983 and completely AGREE with your comments Dick. I am glad to see Lapierre gone and do hope that the NRA gets back to its roots in defending our 2A rights. But I now support GOA, FPC, GOF and the SAF.

I stopped giving money or even caring about the NRA years ago. I really hope they fix themselves but unfortunately I believe they will continue on the same path just with a different figure head. If they do change their ways I will join again. 🤠

I’ve been a life member of the NRA since the late 80’s. La Pierre sucks. I stopped giving part of my yearly tax return check to the NRA about 10 years ago, because of LaPierre. I instead started giving that money to Gun Owners of America (GOA) and Firearms Policy Coalition (FPC). That’s been the best investment ever!

I tried to bump my life membership up to one of the higher levels. That was like pulling teeth out of a rhino. I simply asked them for a monthly “bill” like they do for monthly regular memberships. They told me that they couldn’t do it. I went back and forth with them on the phone and said, “I want to give you FREE money, don’t you want it?” They said yes, but they were incompetent and all phone calls ended with a “gee sorry we can’t help you.” They wanted me to just send the total dollar amount blindly, but they couldn’t guarantee me a receipt stating that I’ve paid in full and have been bumped up to either endowment, patron or benefactor level. So I gave them the middle finger and said no more money. No more donations.

Amen. I let my decades long membership lapse when they did squat for my state, and just hounded me for money with a constant barrage of junk mail. I told them stop sending me this crap, and put the money towards something useful. Moved on to GOA. I sure hope they can regain their honor, vigor, and purpose, but for now it's a wait and see proposition.

I have hated the NRA's Instructor Certification Program from day one. It is overly complex with all of it's different levels and certifications. I was a Combat Arms Training and Maintenance, (CATM), instructor in the USAF for nearly 30 years. We had one class that certified us on all of the common weapons in the inventory. How to use them, teach them and maintain them. Rifles, pistols, shotguns, machine guns and grenade launchers were all taught at the basic school at Lackland AFB. Once certified, there was the Heavy Weapons school for the M-2 and the 81mm Mortor. There was also a Machine Gun specialty course. Other weapons like the M-72 LAW was trained on station if you were stationed where they were in use. Also, once you were certified you remained certified throughout your career. One thing we did that you don't see on the civilian side was to have quarterly reviews. Once per quarter, another instructor would sit through your class and give you a critique afterwards. The only people critiquing civilian NRA instructors are their students, but what does a student know about the fundamentals of education, questioning techniques or use of training aids? I've sat through a lot of classes taught by NRA instructors and most of them suck. The only instructors I've seen that are worth their pay are the ones who have LE or Military background. Another problem I've had with NRA is that they only allow you to teach their program and they don't allow you to teach anything at all about local, state or federal firearms laws, use of force under these laws or anything else that a concealed carrier needs to know to survive the Fight after the fight, the legal battles that will follow. So for years, to teach concealed carry here in CO, even though a Basic NRA Pistol Course would satisfy the educational requirement for the CO Concealed Handgun Permit, it does not adequately prepare a civilian to carry a concealed handgun, much less actually have to use the thing. They need to know when to use it, when NOT to use it, the laws regarding it's use just to name a few. NRA training is fine if all you want to do is hunt, plink at pop cans or shoot in competition, but it sucks at the defensive use of arms.

I agree with all you said. I think instructor training/development SHOULD be a major part of the NRA mission, but it needs to be completely revamped by someone who knows their stuff.

Yes I agree. the courses needed improvement and stood clear from the liability issues. You’re right about student feedback. My feedback wasn’t accepted. The course did bring the local police to talk but their sticking point was tell us if you get pulled over that you have a gun. Let us knock the poop out of you until we figure out you are not a crook. Well, something like that.. I hoping the situation will change in the NRA. I’m going to look closer at some of the alternatives to the NRA. But we need help now! The protection acts being drafted into law is a beaurocratical nightmare that does nothing but trample on our Second Amendment rights and Close local Shops. Hopefully, the 25 th Amendment will actually work… rather than tossing the preverbal political stone throwing.

As a former Scoutmaster, I support the NRA for the reason you stated, getting the next generation involved in the shooting sports. I hold the Rifle, shotgun, Pistol, and black powder Instructor ratings, as well as RSO, and my son has the Rifle and Shotgun Instructor. You are completely right the NRA needs to listen to us, and get involved in the 2A fight, but continue to take the lead with the youth through 4H, Scouting, and other youth shooting activities.

My memories of the NRA as a 12-year-old kid in 1961 were all good. Back then, it was much more innocent and focused on shooting skills, gun safety, and education. Yet somewhere afterward, it became more like the Gestapo. Gone were the focus on all of the positive things about marksmanship, safety, and more, replaced by incessant angry barking about gun rights. Finally, it culminated in what we see today ... an organization that has completely lost its way and alienated a large percentage of the U.S. population. At least LaPierre's departure offers us a glimmer of hope.

I held pistol certification for NRA & USCCA until I realized they were trying to make their citizen instructors basically salesmen & recruiters to their programs. I teach mostly on a one-on-one basis often to women whose experience tells them they'd like to prevent future incidents. That doesn't lend itself to the class sizes the USCCA in particular wants to push. I generally don't charge anyway so I let the certifications lapse. It's now a little past a month since Lapierre's resignation & I haven't seen any progress yet. Until I see changes I'm done with NRA completely & only keep insurance from USCCA.

We call ourselves "gun nuts" in a friendly way, but our adversaries think we are TRULY nuts and dangerous. Since I think Liberalism is a form of mental illness, they are merely accusing us of what they are ... DANGEROUS NUTS! The "gun culture" in the US is the natural evolution of the 3% of the colonists who overthrew the world's mightiest army to create this country. The gun culture is essential to keeping us free, we must preserve it and teach it to our children.

I am one level past Life Member, whatever that is. I agree we need an organization to fight the fight. Is it really the NRA? I used to think so a long time ago. They may be the biggest, but they are not the most effective or even present sometimes. In fact I would say they abandoned their post in the fight for 2A probably at least 10 years ago. Since then organizations such as GOA, FPC, SAF have filled the breach and seemingly become what stands between the gun grabbers and us. Does the NRA even want to fight the fight for 2A or just fundraise off of it? Seems like the latter. Perhaps they should just become once again an organization for sportsmen/hunters ed/gun safety/marksmanship and there is nothing wrong with that. Perhaps we rely on and fund GOA, FPC,SAF to fight the 2A battle and not have NRA siphoning off 2A funding. Just my opinion. I should add that I agreed with everything you said and how you said it.
