It’s so ironic that i already cut my dogs nails JUST LIKE THIS! Wow! I always just “felt” like i can get it so much shorter by cutting the bottom, top and the sides and use my dremel dog shaving tool to smoothe it all out! Thanks for this video! Made me feel so much better with the way i cut my dogs nails.

Thank you for this! I couldn't understand why my girls nails and quicks are so long and it's because I've only ever done method 1! She has been obsessively paw licking for weeks and I couldn't figure out why. Today I noticed one of the lighter nails has bruising inside and I started to research. I feel so bad that her long nails are now causing her pain and bruising 😭 I do have a nail grinder and I will use that now to round it all out and get them receding finally. Fingers crossed it finally works 🤞

I got my golden retriever used to the Dremel shortly after I brought him home. I used a grooming hammock. I’d talk to him, examine his nails, talk to him some more, tell him I think that first nail is worth two treats, give them the two treats and quickly do the nail. He didn’t like it, but he tolerated it. Gradually I could do more with less treats. I kind of negotiated a new contract with him. Now I can catch him napping and do a couple of nails, maybe a whole foot, and call it quits without him ever fully waking up.

Hi may I ask where you got your hammock and how do you hoist your dog up- like what type of frame do you use? I have a 38 lb whippet (who absolutely HATES nail day), and I only see grooming hammocks being used with much smaller dogs. Thanks so much!!!

Love the tips. My dogs get a bit overgrown if I skip a week so this is good to know. Just a tip for the Dremel, lowering the RPMs will make it more comfortable for your pet. The vibration from higher RPMs can be unpleasant and painful.

Great video on nail trimming! I try to do the 4-facetted clip. I think what happens is the nail when cut like that wears down faster because it's not as strong and naturally keeps pushing the quick back. PB's nails are pretty thick, so doing the second cut to take the top back thinner is crucial.

@@bettyj.5465 how often did you dremel before they started getting shorter? Once a week or every couple of days? And how long did it take to get them shorter? I'm trying to do alot of research before I get started. My dog had an IVDD (slipped disc) flare up and I need to get her nails shorter before she gets off bedrest in 2 weeks. I'm sure it will take longer but the groomer could never get them short.

This video is awesome😊 It makes purrrrfect sense. 🐕How long does it take for the quick to go back inside? Are dogs more prone to licking them if it's exposed? Something tells me my vet would probably say it's a higher chance of bacterial entry? I'm not saying I wouldn't do it, I surely am going to try #4 if she will allow me to. I am one that tends to do my own research and question everything since my pooch was diagnosed with IMT - Immune Mediated Thrombocytopenia She is on the way to recovery, but we came very close to losing her and I question everything now. So I have to treat her with kid gloves and be very aware of her surroundings, medications, vaccines and food intake. Thousands of dollars later, but she is slowly recovering, and I just felt the need to ask you the above questions before trying your amazing way of trimming nails. Sorry so long of a comment. If i trim 1x a week even a microscopic amount her nails bleed. I took her to the vet and they just cut all her quicks which frustrated me. Great video. I already do this actually with my Ruby Doo. I use 100% the grinder. How ever the reason I take out that hood is to get a more rounded nail that does not scratch as much. But its cool to learn that this also helps to get the quick to retreat. Just so you know All dogs will tolerate the grinder its just do they have owners that will actually take the time to teach the dog. I have a great video on how to teach your dog to love the grinder on my channel.

These are fantastic videos - so clearly explained to get the quick back. What I struggle with is positioning to dremel. I've tried to watch where you are and you seem to be comfortable in any position - you in front of the dog with them standing, you behind/over them, etc. My Jack Russel mix is skiddish but will tolerate with a muzzel and someone holding her. I just have to go quick. Any thoughts or suggestions?

I have at least 1 video that might help: “holds for dremeling a small dog’s nails” kzbin.info/www/bejne/h4jHk2Vuo9x3p8U This video shows the holds I mainly use, but there are other potential positions and holds out there. For example, some people have their dogs lay down in their lap! I also have a tiny dog holds vid: kzbin.info/www/bejne/pKqlnHx8pJWkpZI in case it helps at all. You might consider doing only one foot per session for a while, or breaking the task down in some similar way so each session isn’t as stressful for your dog. Hope that is helpful, let me know if you have further questions! 🐶

Hi! You've helped me out in the past and I'm still trying to receed my boys quicks haha. I think I needed to add the extra helmet removal part of it. I did Dremel little underneath then the side and then I'd round the nail so it wasn't pointy. But from what it sounds like I need to do the sides still but also take the Dremel and take the top off too. I tried this yesterday felt weird because I wasn't sure how far into the top I could go (wasn't in the lightest of light to see the quicks) so I prob stopped haha. Would it be ok when doing the sides to continue the side over the top/helmet if that makes sense?? Or would it be best to get the nail area lit back wise so that I can see the quick area and then accurately take the top off? Since the quixk hasn't receded to where I need them should I do this process every 3 days or so until we get to the point of recession and then can prob do 1-2 weeks. Or longer.

I have read on some Facebook groups that it helps to ask your groomer if they’re familiar with the “alternate cut line” with trimming nails. That phrase basically refers to the 2nd nail example in this video so it’s not even the whole story, but it can help you start a dialogue with the groomer and discern whether they’re thinking in the direction of quick receding or not. (You could also mention that you saw a video on the topic and ask if they’d be interested in trying to help you recede your dog’s quicks) Some groomers charge extra to dremel because it’s an additional skill that takes extra effort. I worked for a shop where the standard was to dremel the nails as short as we can get ‘em. That was included in the price of the groom. Only occasionally if a dog wouldn’t tolerate the dremel would we settle for “just” clipping. So every groomer is different!

Very helpful, especially the part about focusing on the helmet and sides of the nail. My 55 pd very strong dog will not let professional groomers or even the vet trim his front paws. With lots of patience and experiment, I can trim once a week. I smear a spoonful of peanut butter on the inside of a heavy bowl. While he licks the PB I clip the tips of his nails. They are very hard and black. Then I smooth with a small dremmel. He tolerates this well and nails are better. But his nails could still be shorter. I will now focus on the helmet to see if we can get the quick to recede further. Can you do a tutorial about how to gage the location of the quick on hard black nails?
@GoodDogGrooming
@GoodDogGrooming 2 жыл бұрын
Yes! Black nails are tricky. It’s a matter of dremeling some, checking your progress, dremeling more, checking again, etc. you’re looking for a black circle that is different than the surrounding black. I am working on a video with footage and close up images that hopefully will help. It’s such a common question!!

My question is, does it make the dogs nails feel more sensitive or uncomfortable while you’re working on receding your dogs long overgrown quicks? I mean, if the blood supply is receding to protect itself, is it causing sensitivity or discomfort to the dog during that process? That’s what I’m worried about, and what stops me from trimming back as much as I probably could and should. I just got my rescue to trust me enough to finally let me trim his nails and I don’t want to undo that by causing him discomfort, sensitivity or pain. Before I gained his trust to trim his nails I was going to our vet for them to do it. But every time I brought him to the vet it barely looked like they cut anything as they won’t do any of the techniques or methods to help recede his extra long quicks. So I’m trying to build my bank of knowledge and my confidence by watching as many videos as I can and taking as much little tidbits of knowledge & tricks of the trade from you generous experts. Thanks for this in-depth explanation, it was really helpful. I just want to gain a better understanding of the whole process.

Someone commented that they think some quicks never recede. Are there some breeds this applies to? I have a pit/Dalmatian and vets and groomers have never been able to get her nails short. In fact she still clicks even after getting her nails clipped every 2 weeks. So either they are doing it wrong (very likely) or my dog has quicks that don't recede. I just bought a dremel and will try your method which you did a great job of explaining. How often should I dremel and how long to get her very long nails comfortably short?

I would say once or twice a week should work to recede the quicks. Here’s my video explaining why you can sometimes go longer and still have success though: kzbin.info/www/bejne/oWOsYXitob-UkM0 I highly doubt that “some quicks never recede,” but I’m not an expert in the evolution of dog breeds, etc. Hope my video helps!

@@GoodDogGrooming Thanks! I just watched the video. I will try every 2-3 days since her nails are so long. Then I will watch to see how fast they grow and dremel accordingly.

I appreciate & agree with your approach but in the 6 years of my dogs life, they’ve *NEVER* receded. She absolutely hates the clippers but tolerates the Dremel so I grind them on each side, every 2 wks & her nails always remain long because of that quick. 😔 I believe now, that some dogs quicks just won’t go back as far as *we’d* like them to. Great tips though!

Great video. Very helpful. I learned a lot. If my dog won’t tolerate the Dremel, would doing the ACL or 3D clipped approaches be enhanced by filing the nails a little by hand? Cos if it’s all about removing the outer helmet, a course nail file should be able to take a little more nail off, right? Thank you in advance
@GoodDogGrooming
@GoodDogGrooming 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, as a matter of fact filing with a stiff, coarse grit nail file is the same as dremeling, only much slower. So it absolutely can be a great strategy to increase quick-receding success! Search for the larger, very rigid files with either 80 or 100 grit. (Or, if you’re lucky you can find a double sided one with both grits!) Hope that helps!

Best video I’ve seen on trimming and I’ve watched a gazillion. You have a new subscriber. Great up close shots and thoughtful clear instructions. Far too many videos do not address how to recede the quick. Also, appreciate that you explained about the top of the nail. I’m curious about the grinding head. I like the shape. Where can I get that one?

That’s a DiamaGroove! The company is called Whitman’s. It’s an expensive bit, but it’s the best out there for grinding dogs’ nails. I am working on a new video comparing the different metal bits in different price ranges. In the mean time I do have a video introducing the DiamaGroove… Lemmie find the link for you.

I broke my dominant wrist and am having trouble cutting my dogs nails due to residual weakness. Are there clippers that can make up for this handicap? My dog, though only a cocker mix, has large thick nails and I can’t cut the nail even with new clippers. Or would it be better to try the dremel? Ollie has long fine hair and I’m nervous getting all the hair, such hairy paws, out of the way.

Sorry for the delay, I lost track of this comment. I wish I could help but I’m not aware of clippers that are specifically for weaker hands. However, in general I find the Miller’s Forge red handled clippers best because they are sharp and slice the nail instead of crushing the nail. Dremeling can be fatiguing on the hands and wrists, depending on how compliant your dog is. If you have to grip the paw extra hard it can wear you out pretty quick. However it very much could be worth a try if clipping is proving to be a problem for you. Here’s my “scooch fur out of the way to dremel” video… hope it helps! kzbin.info/www/bejne/iWbac32qoamVnbs

I have a large dog and she does not tolerate me cutting her nails. She got her quicks nipped frequently by her previous owner and is extra hesitant to let anyone cut her claws. Puts me in a predicament because the quicks grow out and become easier to accidentally hit. Are there veterinary treatments for reducing the quick? I'm at the point where I'm considering asking my vet to sedate her and cut them back to a normal length quick and all.

You may be using too fine of a grit. Sandpaper should work just fine. I usually use a 1/2” diameter drum shaped sandpaper head that is either 60 or 80 grit. When the quick is exposed like that is it unpleasant as the dog is running on pavement etc until it recedes? I’ve dremel’d my dogs back that far but had concerns at times. Any experience would be helpful.

A very long walk (say, 30 to 60 min) on cement sidewalks immediately following a dremeling nail trim can cause bleeding. I have heard at least one account of that, so I decided to start advising people to wait at least a day or two for hard cement walking/running. Overall as long as you’re sort of “revealing” the quick and not digging really far into it, there should be no discomfort to the dog. Hope that helps!

Regarding the phrase, "now your dog will feel that, but it's not an injury." Does that mean it will hurt them? I just can't continue when I think it has hurt my dog. I want them to trust that I would never hurt them.
@GoodDogGrooming
@GoodDogGrooming Жыл бұрын
So my little diatribe starting at 4:40 in this video is explaining how the dremel can touch the outer-most shell of the quick and not actually cause any injury. Exposing the quick is important for quick-receding success. But at that level of closeness, there’s different levels of sensitivity depending on the dog. I would think of it sort of like having a dentist clean your teeth. It’s uncomfortable and there may even be moments where that vibrating brush thing buzzes too close to your gums and makes you flinch. But it’s more of a tickle than a scrape or physical injury. Does that make sense? The dog flinched her paw away at 5:05 when I buzzed over the quick briefly. My interpretation was not that it made her feel pain, but it made her momentarily uncomfortable. Usually pain during dremeling/clipping would be indicated by a yelp.

I know this is a year old video but still. I have a question. I actually trim my dog's nails weekly. I've been doing it since she was 2-months-old and she'll be 2-years-old this December 6th and for the life of me I just couldn't get them any shorter than they are and family likes to complain they're too long. Okay, and? I'm trying! My dog's nails sit just off the floor when she stands or sits. But when she runs or walk you can hear them click off the floor. This can get annoying when your home is nearly all hard floor and you have an Aussie that likes to move. And my dog's nails are so close to the quick that I can't really use clippers too much so I use a fingernail filer on her weekly and I have been doing the top and bottom but had no idea about the sides. I just did her nails last night so I will do the sides later today. I'm so glad I conditioned my dog to things like this. I make her lie on her back between my legs and I just give her a pedicure. 😂 She usually falls asleep. I feel confident enough that I can get her used to the dremel when I eventually buy one. I got her used to the blow dryer so this should be fine. Lol. I am curious about something though and this is my question. Yesterday when I was doing her nails I noticed a soft spongy spot on the underside of her nails that were sensitive to touch but not painful. Is that the quick? So I exposed them and that's good? Also, your dog kind of looks like my Aussie, but she doesn't have the gray on her face.

@@kathleenphelan8708 oh my gosh this is a really good question. I don’t have a simple answer but I’ll do my best. Every dog will be different. I think that in as little as 2 months you can see some significant change. It depends a little on how often you’re trimming them, and how well. There was a dog I dremeled every 5 weeks (which is a big gap of time when trying to recede!) and it took 3 sessions to get the long quicks “normal” so that was nearly 4 months. I hope that helps! I may just have to gather more examples and make this question into a video topic one day! Thanks! 🐶
