Copland first encountered Pierre Boulez in a private performance Boulez gave in 1949 of Boulez' Second Piano Sonata, which makes Copland's Piano Variations sound like a Clementi Sonantina.

The Boulez Connotations was performed during the eight-year period when there were no NY Phil broadcasts. Whether any recording exists therefore is doubtful.
