I had a lesson with Maria Tipo in 1977 while in school at Stanford U in Firenze. My regular lessons were with Clara Saldicco, also a great teacher. They both guided me and opened my eyes to some technical breakthroughs that happened once I got back to the states and began my masters degree. I was able to win competitions (Jeux d’Eau was one I played at a winners recital), play concertos with orchestras as a result, and enjoy at least a modest career in performance , although I also worked as a computer programmer for 13 years before returning to performing and running a concert series. I later got a masters in nursing and still play for myself, undertaking all 555 Scarlatti sonatas during COVID. Thanks for posting Maria Tipo’s wonderful musicianship and timeless accomplishments. I continue my study of music as a lifelong endeavor. These and other recordings of hers will inspire me again as much as Argerich’s have for years.

Hello Peter, your story is inspiring. As an italian engineer with a passion for the piano I often struggle to find the time and power for consistent practice, although I did not embark on a professional piano career I can relate to your story. How did you manage to keep practicing and playing piano while working in tech environment?

@@omron9498 Hi- I agree, it isn’t easy to balance work with the rest of your life, and keeping up your musical skills does require focus and practicing. While I was a programmer I limited my work hours as much as possible to 9-5. I didn’t care that this handicapped me for bigger raises. I got tired of practicing on my own all the time so I enrolled in a chamber music class at the 92nd St Y that matched me up with 4 string players to do piano quintets- we stayed as a group for several years, went through much of the repertoire. We did master classes with a number of excellent performers that helped prod us to excel. I was also introduced to other musicians for piano quartets and trios and accompanying singers and instrumentalists. My job became more stressful, so I quit, mainly to take care of a health crisis. After about 2 years of focusing on my health, working out at the gym and practicing, I moved from NYC to Provincetown, MA and started a concert series that was half chamber music and half broadway singers and eclectic concerts of various styles. I tried to make my part of the series open first to grassroot local musicians, teachers at universities near cape cod, students who were music majors, musicians who spent part of their summers in Provincetown. I had graduates or faculty from North Carolina School of the Arts, Julliard, Eastman, Curtis Institute, Boston University, members of the Cape Cod Symphony, singers who were serious, doing auditions in Europe and summers working in Ptown. It was a joy but also stressful since I constantly battled tendinitis and had to take prednisone every season when my hand would become inflamed up to my armpit and I was unable to sign my name for two weeks. The prednisone cleared it up so I never missed a concert but it came at a systemic cost. After a few years I moved to San Francisco and had hand surgeries, got certified in massage and started on my masters in Nursing. I rarely perform publicly now but I still play most days for my own needs. My hands were always small but now I have to refinger pieces I used to be able to reach, but I still plug away at it. I would be pretty damn good if I hadn’t been forced to support myself with more marketable skills. Now I’ve learned to accept my limitations and not work for perfection, which inevitably flares up tendinitis again.

@porgain Do you know how one can send fan mail or email to Maria Tipo? I admire her playing so much and wish there was a way to share the sentiment with her. Not sure if she cares, being out of the spotlight and probably just enjoying private life for the last few decades and so (well, I imagine). From Google search it seems she is in her early 90s and obviously anything that can be shared, there is limited time to do it now

I have been a huge Maria Tipo fan ever since I stumbled onto her Busoni recordings on youtube. After that I lestened to everything by her I could find. When I stumbled onto this video I couldn't wait to hear her play Ravel. I am still waiting as the Schubert is so compelling I am listening to all of it. Many thanks for posting such a rare treasure. I envy anyone who had lessons with her and am so sorry to hear that she had a physical problem that forced her into retirement. I would also like to mention that I tracked down her book on technique and purchased it from a German publisher. It is quite interesting.

One of the great masters of the modern age, but the piano here is miked much too closely and some of her pedaling sounds more blurred and her tone harsher than they probably did live. While there are a few fudges, the uncanned spontaneity of expression, sheer daring, and the musicality of her phrasing are, as always with Tipo, commanding and enthralling.

That's silly. Two different artists. Yes, some good arguments might be made on very small, specific points, but it's not really worth discussing who's technically superior, who's more musical, etc. At these levels, it becomes a question of personal taste. On the other hand, Lionel Messi IS definitely superior to Cristiano Rolando 🙂
