When I was a Sears photographer we had two tools in our arsenal to make babies/toddlers smile. A rubber ducky and a spray bottle. If we could not get them to laugh with the rubber, ducky, we spritzed them with water and captured their reaction, which is usually a grimace, but looks like a smile.

Can confirm that we did get studio pictures taken of my son at a few months old and for his first birthday, 2016-2017. So some people do still get studio pictures done of babies. And it was at the mall, so Link was correct.
