I am a mental health patient who has been hospitalized and received ECT. Thankfully, I have a family who loves me and insurance. I suffer from agoraphobia and most of my former professional friends are long gone. It was my interaction with homeless people where I felt un judged and through them I am improving daily and learning lessons. I couldn’t imagine life on the streets even in perfect health. Michael, I so wish the city would work with you to somehow come up with and provide sleeping “pods” or foldable mobile sleep containers so the houseless people could at least feel some type of security at night with their belongings. Unfortunately it’s not as easy as it may seem to get someone off the street. There are civil rights laws that prevent us from forcing our loved ones to get help. My sister suffers from mental illness and is homeless. All the money in the world could not get her off the street. If I tried to get her off the street, she would call the police on me! And those police cannot do anything. It’s not easy

A check will be in the mail Monday to help a few people. My heart just breaks for all the homeless and mentally challenged people. 🙏🇺🇸❤️. My oldest sister was diagnosed at age 60 with schizophrenia. My twin sister and I took her over her care, along with her handicapped daughter. I moved them to TN and bought them a home. My niece is now under the care of an organization that provides housing in a group home. My niece was very lucky and she shares a home in a regular subdivision with one other woman. My sister is in assisted living with advanced dementia. It is so hard to be a caregiver.

The constant fumbling with clothing is a sign on meth use. We need to stop the flow of this drug to these humble people. It's sad to see this addiction take control of their lives. I work nearby. In my city there is a shelter network for the mentally ill where they have a personal space to sleep and they are served meals but they have to be out of the shelter during the day. I guess too much drama to manage if they stay inside all day with a crowd so the shelter has worked out just meal and sleep hours. My family used to cook at home and serve meals there one Sunday a month for over 10 years until we moved. It's a good system as ppl want their freedom to do what they do but it gives them a home base for a few things and some hot meals. One guy we got to know, Joe, would travel to visit his sister's farm then come back and stay in the city shelter, it was just where he wanted to be.

Having come into some contact with people who are homeless, many do not want help (mental health issues and dugs taken as a self medication), their families are often heartbroken by this. It might be the same for this ladies family. I'm in my 50's and remember someone who is the same age as me glue sniffing and started living on the street at the age of 12, he did start asking for help and was told he would be given a home if he spent some time getting 'cleaned-up / learning how to take care of himself, he just kept refusing.

Michael you are an angel on this Earth. This was so heartbreaking and the act of kindness and concern you showed for her is rare in this world today. My heart breaks for her. I hope she is somewhere safe now. My kids and I used to make 150 sandwiches and bring clothing every Sunday and give to those without a home in a city near my town. So I can imagine how you feel when you get home your thoughts are still focused on who you met that day and trying to remember what other needs they have so you can bring it to them next time. I remember in my case a man told me he just needed a pair of reading glasses. I never saw him again and to this day I wish I would have had reading glasses the day I saw him. That was over 10 years ago.The smallest things bring me the most joy and the same goes for my children who are grown now.Thank you for all you do. Sorry this comment is so long.

The mentally ill often do not want the help available from what society tries to provide. Paranoia or having trust betrayed or preferring solitude….there are many reasons. In addition, the unintended consequences of HIPAA which preserves MI the right to refuse medical help frustrates those who might create the changes the person needs to be part of the world. Lisa is a good example of someone who needs understanding help. What a waste of a precious human being. Thank you Michael for all you continue to do.

Lisa is a sad story. It's terrible when they have family and live like that. She's such a lost soul and you just want to see her in a room with a nice comfortable bed and a shower to wash her hair. It's just too sad for words. I can't believe people steal their things, that makes even sadder.
