Goodreads Choice Awards 2024 || Are They Good?

I was quite glad that we didn't have 3 Greek myth retellings on the fantasy list this years. Those got old very quickly for me. Still doesn't really feel like it represents fantasy for me. :D Also, the cover of Five Broken Blades, I wanted to mention that this is usually classified as romantasy, but I saw that Esmay already commented that. :D I probably would have switched it out with the Spellshop because I think that is more cosy fantasy than romantasy.

Even though it's a popularity contest, I just get excited by it every time hahaha. I feel like the fantasy and sci-fi sections are becoming more and more 'literary', there really aren't any good epic fantasies or space operas. But as a bookish omnivore, I don't even mind. Five Broken Blades is actually a romantasy, but it's being mismarketed lol. And A Sorceress Comes to Call is soooo good, I think you should do yourself a favour and try some Kingfisher, she has so much to offer!

Goodreads choice awards is essentially a popularity contest but I agree it’s kinda fun to watch it all unfold and to root for ones you like! You should totally check out Dead Cat Tail Assassins the next time you need a quick read - it’s a great palette cleanser. Really fun story!

Since you mentioned Laura disowning you as a friend, I have to say that I think you would love Warlord Chronicles, Tom! The first book has a slow start, but it pays off. I immersion read it with ebook and audio, and the narrator is phenomenal!! The In Ascension author talked about taking strange first contact inspiration from Solaris, but the books are very different from one another. In Ascension reads more like sci-fi literary fiction, which I apparently enjoy. 😅

The Book of Doors was such an incredible read for me. It has magic in a modern world and (a minor spoiler that is mentioned on the sinopse) time travelling. The way the story is told with the time travelling is really good, and the villains in this books are pure evil, which was kinda unexpected for me, but it worked out in the story. It was a 5 star read for me and some friends I’ve recommended it to also got hooked to it. Some of the critic I’ve read from some people is fair, but for a debut novel this was a very good journey. I can’t wait for Garreth’s next book.

There was a lot of litfic/dystopian/thriller books in the scifi section which I don’t feel is really scifi

Incidents Around The House was surprisingly good in my opinion. Paranormal stuff is usually hit or miss but it's told from the perspective of a child and it really worked for me. I read it at night while dog sitting for a family member and was by myself so maybe that helped. The Goodreads Choice Awards are fun but I was bummed out to not see graphic novels to choose from that was definitely one of my favorite categories in the past.

Hi! II loved how you did this video! 'm usually not one for recommending against a book, but just as a warning. I loved the Five Broken Blades cover as well and bought it without any other knowledge I ended up kind of hate-reading it. I do not think it fits the rest of your taste. So if you consider pick it up I'd recommend at least reading some reviews to learn about its strengths and flaws before you choose to spend your precious reading time on it.

I loved A Sorceress Comes to Call (creepy fantasy) and The Tainted Cup - but that last one is primarily a mystery in a fantasy world, and not everyone is interested in mystery plots.

I'm not sure how I feel about Goodreads, let alone their choice awards. I like to read the reviews by people I trust, but I've never been a fan of star ratings. I feel Goodreads and other modern reading awards are usually skewed by the people that use/vote with them. First, people that read a lot are already a minority, and my demographic is likely a minority of that minority. Anyone could potentially like any book, but demographic data can lead to some reasonable assumptions based on percentages. My demographic doesn't have much sway, but that's okay. As long as books are being published for the target audience i belong to, I'm fine. I won't complain about what books win these awards because I've found KZbin reviewers that have similar tases in books that I do, so I follow their advice. Anyway, happy reading everyone.

Yeah I dont think the Goodreads awards should be taken too seriously. Some gems will make it though but a lot of it are people voting for books they havent read.

Every year I’m usually familiar with majority of the goodreads award books, but this year I was only familiar with two🧐🤔🤓 either I’m way behind with popular opinion or these awards this year came out of thin air🤔 Oh and forewarning do not read The Lost Story🤣👎 I made it halfway thru before vomiting when I discovered it’s a gay romance
