Great video and explaination! I've done the same thing to a number of decks, using West epoxy too, but I did it a little differently. I layed the fiberglass directly into the board, poured the resin on and spread out with the squeegee tool. I was able to get the resin to penetrate perfectly. Saves another piece of plastic and possibly extra mess. I watched boat building/repairing videos and this is how they did it.

Hi. What if i want to lay the fibre glass in between the top and bottom plys? Any tips i should take note when applying fibreglass in between plys when pressing a skateboard?

I've never mixed epoxies and standard wood glues in a layup, but I'd like to try. I can just pass on the big tips I learned in my snowboard build: practice your layup beforehand against a clock so you know you're getting everything in place fast enough, and mix your epoxy in batches in small containers

I know this is a late comment but I am going to fiberglass my board and this is the most informative video I can find. What brand of fiberglass cloth did you? And was the cloth a biaxial fiberglass cloth?

This was an 8oz 0-90 bi-axial glass if I remember right. I don't know the brand, it was something I had in the shop

Hey man great video still holds out for 2 years now, 1 question can I spray paint before putting on the fiberglass? I'm using acrylic spray paint and I'm afraid that the paint would cause a reaction to the resin.

That should be fine, the green and blue stripes on this deck are acrylic inks. If you're worried you could always do a little test batch

Hello, i am about to restore an old sector9 pintail that I have laying around in the basement using your method to stiffen it a bit. thanks for the video, it sure helps a lot! One question though: what kind of ink did you use under the resin? I'm afraid to use any paint that will react with the epoxy...

I actually painted those brush strokes on beforehand, if I remember right I used some acrylic block printing inks. I haven't experimented with pigmenting resins yet

Epoxy. I had my first experience with polyester resin over the weekend and it was horrible all around. Epoxy is the way to go for sure. I don't think I've ever heard of urethane being used in compositing

Scuff up the aluminum with sandpaper or steel wool and clean it with acetone before the layup. As long as the surface is rough enough and the epoxy has something to grip into it should work just fine

I know it has been 2 years but I've just added fiber glass to a maple shape. His inicial weight was about 1250g and after the process he was 1350g.

It depends on the weight and weave of the cloth you're using, because different cloths will absorb different amounts of resin. I don't actually have a surefire method of figuring this out so I usually just try to mix what I think will be too much to compensate. Fibreglast is a pretty great material supplier and they've got a calculator: www.fibreglast.com/fibreglast_materials_calculator I can't vouch for it from personal experience, but I have had really good interactions with that company in other areas. I imagine they'd get it right.

That calculator recommends 1.75 times the weight of the fabric, which seems a reasonable starting point.

I think slick decks have a plastic layer on the bottom, sort of like a snowboard top sheet

Yes you do lose flex, it makes the board stiffer and springier. If you mix the resin correctly it doesn't crack
