It makes me really happy that Undyne took longer to beat than Sans. Sans may be the most powerful, but Undyne is the true hero and I love how the game reflects that

I dunno of this applies to you but, i personally dont play games that i understand extensively enough from videos and playthroughs, re1/2/4, persona3/4, sonic adventure and so on

My only run of Undertale accumulated in me not having to fight Sans somehow, but I defeated nearly everyone in the run that you could. I wasn't going for Genocide Route persay, I just had little attachments to anyone. I even got a friendly Sans ending, too, with driving a car or something.

Can you guys play UNDERTALE Yellow? I really want to see Grant's reactions to Flowey and the new characters :))) Its a fully completed fan prequel that was so good Toby Fox endorsed it, several major KZbinrs made videos supporting it, and it got Silvagunner parodies.

I do agree with Kirran's sentiment, I do feel that the Genocide route is intended to be done after True Pacifist. As it reveals a lot about the true natures of the characters.

I would agree, but True Pacifist has such a finality to it. Genocide as an ending is just not narratively fulfilling, it's a punishment for your crimes. Genocide I also believe encourages resetting your save, where as True Pacifist implores you to not reset. Genocide is also a more likely ending for a player to get first or second time through it assuming no guide. I think True Pacifist first also breaks the game's meta commentary on RPG gameplay and what that says about its protagonists and us as players. I am not sure what the message is supposed to be if we do True Pacifist first whereas with genocide the commentary is clear: RPG mechanics kinda make you a psycho, maybe you shouldn't be a psycho. In my opinion I think the "intended" path is (and I welcome disagreement): Genocide -> Neutral -> Pacifist, although I imagine many people's experience was probably Neutral ->Pacifist or Neutral -> Pacifist -> Genocide.

@@zenaku666 That's a fair oppinion. Personally I feel playing true pacifist after genocide feels a bit awkward, considering the ending changes after doing so. But I do agree that True Pacifist feels very definitive, and it's where I personally stopped. My personal order feels like Neutral -> (True) Pacifist -> (stopping /) Genocide -> (optional) Soulless Pacifist.

@@Lexadin yeah the soulless pacifist is where I get kind of hung up, and frankly I feel it undercuts one of the themes I think the game is going for: forgiveness. We are able to forgive Asriel, Asgore, and Alphys for their crimes. Asriel (as flowly and also as the god of hyperdeath) tried to destroy the whole world, and is implied to have succeeded at least once (we even see it happen in Neutral, and it must canonically happen so he's got at least one world destruction under his belt). Asgore has killed 6 children, and possibly more (no telling how long it took monsters to figure out how to contain human souls, or to acquire souls powerful enough) as well as sacrificing his own people to his cause (where exactly did Alphys get her subjects!!!), and to top it off was willing to commit genocide on all humans for the actions of a misguided town. Alphys commits literal crimes against nature that cannot be undone, and we just kind of shrug and say "but look how cute her and Undyne are UwU." All these characters get happy(ish) endings except maybe Asriel who is stuck as flowly (although you can return to the ruins before finishing the true pacifist rout and he's still in his goat form so I am not sure if he ever becomes flowly again), Asgore at worst remains friends with his ex and seems to be trying to redeem himself happily gardening for Tori's school, and at best gets back together with Tori. Either way his crimes are forgiven he's even allowed to be around children! You know the kind of children he outright just murdered for his cause. Of course Alphys is forgiven and everyone is just kinda ok with their loved ones being these ungodly abominations. She gets the girl, and lives happily ever after suffering literally no consequences for her crimes! But you the protagonist and player, _you tried to make numbers go up,_ you are the scum of the earth forever tainted by your crimes! If you do the genocide run you will never get the satisfaction of a true pacifist rout. You are forever possessed by Chara. It just seems kind of like a double standard, everyone else gets forgiven for their crimes more or less, but you, you will never be fully forgiven in the games eyes. On the one hand the game wants to say "you can never wash away the blood on your hands" with the player, but doesn't extend the same judgement to its characters if it did Alphys would be in jail and forever a pariah, Undyne having left her for literally killing and mutilating monsters (she does it with the protagonist why not Alphys?), the king would be in exile possibly having committed suicide the weight of his crimes finally consuming him, and Asirel would be hung for his deeds to prevent him from killing even more. Although, being a soulless flower for the rest of his life, forever alone, is likely punishment enough for him. Yet these characters are allowed to be happy even though their crimes are arguably worse than the player's/protagonist, or at the very least equivalent to them. Or is undertale really trying to say making numbers go up is the same or worse as merging countless souls into an abomination? And I describe the player's crimes as "making numbers go up" not to be glib, but because that is what Chara tells you he represents. That feeling of satisfaction watching a number go up, and he is dead set (as is by extension the player) on making that number go up. In the game destroying the world, killing all life, resetting the world in your own image, and creating ungodly abominations are all crimes we can be washed of and for all practical purposes forgiven. But getting a little dopamine rush by watching a number rise? Or wanting to check on alt endings? These are unforgivable sins and you deserve to rot forever. I am of course being hyperbolic. The game I don't think really claims watching numbers go up is akin to genocide. And I still think the game's message stands. But I do feel the souless pacifist route doesn't fit with the overarching narrative. It comes off as the game trying to judge the player too harshly, while ignoring the crimes of its own characters. tldr; Undertale is great but I believe its message of forgiveness and the power of pacifism are undercut by the soulless pacifist rout. I believe the characters are judged to one standard the player to another, and this creates a disconnect that ultimately (to me at least) makes all the talk of pacifism and forgiveness ring hollow.

@@zenaku666 This reminds me of my one major gripe with LotR. The One Ring is such a PERFECT metaphor for power and how it corrupts everyone and no one is safe to wield it. It's such a beautiful condemnation of hierarchy, yet this message gets thoroughly muddled with the side theme of the birthright of kings. Which is it? Is there NO ONE who can resist the corrupting force of power or are there certain bloodlines who can be just rulers? It's so frustrating. Sorry it's not about Undertale, but lamenting a story's muddling of messages reminded me of this and I've never really had the opportunity to talk about it before.
