I asked one of the long time employees at my GW bins, where this stuff ends up, and she told me it is shipped over seas to (China etc.) on big cargo ships and sold to other countries! Goodwill makes a huge amount of money...

I have bought some beautiful Stuart weitzman (current) suede pumps (from a production company auction-I’ve learned to never buy retail again) for the parties we will be having after this is all over. My thoughts- so much stuff might not make it to the bins if the Goodwill store would not continue to raise their prices. I pass by many item in Goodwill due to crazy pricing- I’m sure much of that goes on to be bin inventory. I feel like they would rather send it potentially to the landfill than mark it down and sell it- we have NO sales or promo days at my Goodwill. :(

After my parents passed I had to deal with a huge Avon collection on many shelves in their home!Luckily we have a Salvation Army donation center in town!

Karen, I know a man that worked for Goodwill. He did the pickup from donation boxes, and took them to the main center for that region. There the items are split up for different stores. The items not sd are sent back to that location. The clothing gets compressed in a big machine and is shipped somewhere. The factory I worked for purchases torn clothing that is compressed to use for rags.

Art Deco Purse: when you have the mag glass out, also look all along the inside of each metal top closure frame, since there are often Maker’s marks and Hallmarks on the frames that can help with the provenance.

Those atomic mugs are vintage. Salem North Star. I see a couple of listings on Pinterest and Worthpoint but nothing recent. Hate to tell you about the ones that got away but I think those would have been worthwhile. You're right about glass being unmarked and hard though.

Those chairs were great. We sold a set of them recently on the marketplace. It took a while but patience pays off almost always on everything. Thanks for showing us your digging skill in the bins. Since the beginning of the lockdown I've been selling a LOT of dinnerware. It is heavy, but since I live on the west coast the shipping to other western and southwestern states is really very reasonable and most of my heavy items ship to these states. I do get a bit weary explaining calculated shipping to people living in the Midwest and on the east coast when they're interested in an item and question the "exorbitant" shipping cost. I would think that you could do well selling heavier items to people living on the east coast since you're in Pennsylvania.

The blue plate that you called “folk art” is actually called rosmaling or rose painting. It’s what the Norwegian people in the old days during their long dark winters. Look carefully at the painting and the detail -the more intricate the design the more it’s worth. Look for pieces that are signed some can be quite valuable. Really good ones are handed down from generation to generation. Here in Wisconsin there are many adult education classes teach rosmaling because so many Norwegian people settled here. A lot of the amateur piece end up in thrift stores. The best place to find really high quality rosmaling is estate sales. Often the heirs don’t appreciate what was hanging on Grandma’s house

I remember when that particular bin store was amazing. I found some outstanding linens, carpets, blankets etc there. I don’t know what happened to it. It seems much smaller and the last time I was there I said “no more” and never went back. I felt just as upset as you expressed. All I can think is that a big change in management occurred with a huge change in philosophy about the bins. I imagine their revenue from that store really declined as well. It is so sad. As nice as the regular Goodwill next door is, those bins are the complete opposite. It just doesn’t make sense to me. Oh well, there are always more places to visit. I enjoyed your video very much. I’m not a reseller and just thrift as a hobby. It is a lot of hard work, and you earn every cent you get. I would not be able to do what you do. You are inspiring.

Fast fashion is one of the biggest blights on the earth right now. They sell it off to poor countries, it is not worth reselling for the people who buy it and most of it is in giant mountains of rotting clothing. It is something to be concerned about. But people want cheap clothing that they don't want to spend anytime caring for.

The vintage bags that are beaded are typically heavy. But still check hardware and tags. Made in Hong Kong are definitely vintage. I have an amazing collection found all by thrifting.

Just learned recently from "The Laundry Guy" on HGTV many easy tips for cleaning. He says to spray "cheap" vodka on clothing/items that are musty or smell like smoke because it will kill the bacteria! As always! Love your videos :)

stickler chairs: you mentioned you thought cherry. Always hard to tell from a video, but the color/tone seemed too light for cherry. Perhaps American Chestnut, Walnut, Hickory or Ash, which are all more of a brown tone then Cherry. Chestnut wood be terrific, since it’s rare to find furniture made after the blight killed off so many of those trees.

Well I just threw out a bunch of Denim and Company. Some beautiful pants that I never even worn that I had specifically made to my measurements. I don't know if you remember when Denim and Company was doing that on QVC. You could pick out the length the waist whether you wanted zippers or buttons high-waisted, mid-rise, straight-leg, flare the whole bit! I had them in white denim, regular blue denim and black denim the problem is I had lost a lot of weight right after I purchase them and couldn't wear them. When I dug them out of my closet so many years later I realized they didn't have the stretch as the denim does these days. I do however think I still have some Denim and Company jackets. I didn't realize they were a find. I'm trying to convince a friend to do some reselling as I am unable. Maybe I will save her this stuff now on but I did give it to a women's shelter so at least I feel good about that. I'm learning so much watching you. Again, I told my friend all about you and I am just beginning to send her your videos. She is in perfect situation to get going with reselling as she just moved onto a very large piece of land that she is going to use in some type of farming but she's not sure. Meantime, I think this would be a great thing for her and her husband is a computer whiz and engineer! I hope I can get them excited to try this.

In San Antonio, we aren’t allowed to go in to the bins without gloves. In Austin, no gloves are required.

The wine bottle has been “flattened” by a glass fusing artist by melting in a kiln. These are fairly common at craft fairs. They sell around $10 in my area

I sold two milk glass lamps that were in a box lot I bought.The were in the shape of candles. I priced them at 20 plus shipping. They sold the same day. ( they were only five inches high) I dont know if this was a fluke or if milk glass is back.. Love your videos I always learn a lot. I bought some coffee again but for some reason my name never shows up. I only mention it because I want you to know I appreciate what you do for us. P.S. I sold a pair of Avon earrings for 15. I think the earrings do a little better but I would only pick it up if it was in a bundle

GA Karen. Wonderful find on the chairs. At Sally's (Sal. Army) in Whitehall, on Wed., they have 50% off EXCEPT for one color. Funny thing is that usually is the only color to be found. I believe they have elves come in, during the night, and pull all of the other colors.. :o(

Karen, I asked a manager one time about the stuff that goes to the landfill. I was told they try very hard to keep things out of the landfill by recycling as much as they can. Problem is we don’t have a good recycling program here in the US because recycling is expensive. Much of what we recycle just gets shipped to other countries for them to deal with. Much of those items get stripped and sent to their landfills. The poor people of those countries are the ones that end up suffering from our waist. Sometimes with horrific results. It’s not to say we shouldn’t be recycling (and recycling is slowly getting better) but it’s pretty awful how we pawn our waist off on other countries instead of teaching people to not treat everything as disposable 🥺 I often think if we were dealing with our own waist we would be more responsible because we would be seeing the reality of our waist A lot of clothing gets shipped to other countries too. I’ve watched other KZbinrs go to other countries to find piles of OUR vintage clothing. There is so much clothing that gets shipped out for countries to distribute to people but much of it ends up in other countries flea markets... like piles of clothing. I think this is part of the reason how our vintage clothing styles have becomes so popular in other countries. Have you noticed that a lot of vintage clothing gets sold through global shipping. I’d say well over half of our vintage clothing is purchased from a different country. I’m glad thrift stores try their best to be responsible and utilize recycling but it’s just sad we don’t have more responsible and ethical recycling programs. People complain about resellers because we take stuff from people in need but there is another side to that argument and it’s that resellers and people who repurpose are playing a part with keeping things out of the landfill... although I do have a hard time buying warm clothing at thrift stores because I want to make sure people who need it have access to it... sadly though much of the warm clothing is now overpriced that it’s out of range for people in need to purchase. I do think some thrift stores probably donate warm clothing to missions... I hope. That’s just my one area when thrifting I just can’t get myself to buy. But that’s just me, I certainly don’t begrudge anyone who does as there are so many ways to look at reselling and part of it is it puts food on peoples table, and helps big resellers employ people. I guess I’m right there with you when I see the piles of our waist.

The last time I shopped at a Goodwill, they turned away a homeless family asking for some clothes... and the manager was very loud and rude about it. I abhor their policies!

Your anger may be a bit miss placed. I manage a thrift store. If you have no rules about giving homeless or needy folks free stuff. They will come regularly to pick what they want or like or just to take for it's free. We accept referrals through formal agency's or charities who have vetted the real needs of those challenged individuals or families. You must understand that managers are often pushed several times every day by folks who want for free. It cant work that way. These managers who react to those who demand and won't take no for an answer or who know very well the policies of charities is very understandable. Just try being in those Managers shoes!

I was wondering why you dont go to the bins, now I see why. I have the Queens New York bins. They are very aggressive. Before they release people they actually have a speech. They say there is no biting, pushing, hitting or kicking. Thats how aggressive it gets.
