I bought an old mac pro recently and will be doing something similar. I will keep mine the original color and no window. For yours I would have painted the optical doors

I would have kept it the bare aluminum for sure, but my repairs meant I needed to cover it up. I liked the contrast of the drive doors, but it would look good painted too.

Except from some weird decisions you've made with the finishing details on PSU and paintjob overall your modification is pretty nice and easy to follow for my own mod, and since I can get a G5 case for $20 bucks will be a fun project to do :)

Could you explain how you were able to get the front USB working? I’m not sure I understood from the video. Thanks for the video! I’m looking forward to my own conversion.
@JTechWorkshop5 жыл бұрын
Hi, I removed the USB header from another case I had lying around, then just basically glued it into the location of the original Mac USB ports and ran the connector to the motherboard. It was pretty crude, but it works and didn't require any soldering or special cables.

Isn't your power supply going to be running really hot with the top fan on it being covered by the aluminum case?
@jackkrueger41502 жыл бұрын
This is a really great build. I wouldn't have thought about using something like JB weld, although it makes sense and probably adheres really well thanks to the case's matte finish. It doesn't seem too complex either, all things considered.

nice build, just not a big fan of your psu solution. your 650watt psu's fan wil defenitly start spinning and it doesnt get air to cool down... is the top of the case getting hot now?

Awesome mod; looks great. Inspired by you I recently got one and will be making the changes. My biggest concern is the power button. Which power button wire is the + and which is the -? In the video @6:37 you have blue to the middle contact and white to the bottom. Or alternatively, it doesn't matter which is which since power just short circuits the board?
@JTechWorkshop4 жыл бұрын
Correct, it does not matter what side is positive, as it just completes the connection. Just use your multi meter to confirm its the right contacts!

Cut a hole into tha back of the case and then use a 1/16 inch thick aluminum plate and make am adapter plate for an ATX standard power supply. Or, if possible, once the hole has been cut you might be able to attach the ATX power supply by putting screws through the holes in the back panel. In reality, though, it might have been much easier to replace the entire back panel with one from a pc.
@k4rma1604 жыл бұрын

Did you find a way to make the front audio jack work ?
@Markjonathan4 жыл бұрын
A brilliant build! Id have left the case completely as it was, I feel like by making so many mods, it was almost pointless using the Apple tower? I like the idea of people seeing a 2010 mac pro, only for it to be a Windows gaming beast!
@simonstenzer79874 жыл бұрын
The only thing that bothers me about this mod is how you connected the front panel. Simply because it is possible to connect the power button with LED as well as USB and audio from the panel itself. (I've done this myself with a little research. I haven't bothered to connect the other two though, because i don't think they'll ever gonna be used.) Otherwise a very clean build. I very much like that you've managed to keep the HDD mounts which i couldn't because i used a Full-ATX board.

Excellent build, I’m seeing what I can do with it myself, but how did you manage to connect the case power button to the motherboard? It has an unusual three pins, and I am unsure how to adapt it to work with an ATX motherboard. Did you modify it or use any other cables to do so, and if so, what exactly was it? I‘m a bit stuck here. Thanks in advance!

I actually just checked the wire colors and made sure they ran to the proper positions on each side, then used a crappy PSU to test it with in-case something was wrong.

@@egoodchild im sorry I totally missed this reply, and also realized I mis read your comment. Its really simple with the multi meter, there will be a mode that detects conductivity between the 2 probes, when a circuit is passed through the meter it will beep. All I did was touch the different solder pads on the power switch and pressed the button to see if I got the beep from the meter. Hope that helps.

I'm not a big fan of how the PSU's exhaust fan is almost completely blocked, as that reduces the lifespan of it, and certainly I would have taken steps to try to restore complete functionality on that front panel I/O, as well as a couple other minor changes. Overall though, this is an excellent mod. Nice job!
