I call those little old man carvings tree spirits. The craft originated in Germany a long time ago. People would put them near the entrance to their house where it could "see" who was coming and they supposedly would protect you. They are usually carved out of cottonwood bark. I know this because I have made lots of them (usually gifts for friends). I have made several as wedding gifts but for those I carve a man and a woman from the same large chunk of bark, and they look at each other. Very fun to do!

The technique of the Asian box / cache pot in lacquer with applied carved materials (stone, shell or other inlays) is called shibayama

A vase for 99 cents? I've been thrifting for 40 years and do not resell. Among the things I always pick up are unique inexpensive vases...as whenever I bring/give flowers to someone I always arrange them in the vase instead of the usual cellophane. It makes such a great impression.

@@bethsnyder8376 .... Yes she did and usually when items are stamped France, it's more than likely that they are of good or great quality. The vase had that Baccarat vintage quality even though it was not.

@@auntyharry I also put beautiful cards like from Papyrus and Love Pop in frames i also find thrifting. I throw away the card envelope and put the glass from the frame behind the card, then sign the card. Some of the cards are so beautiful, they are like little framed works of art

Eva Zeisel was an industrial designer in the style and and era of Ben Seibel.. She did a fantastic line for Red Wing pottery. The shapes of the serving pieces are wonderful. The plates Dagny picked up look a little modern day compared to her earlier designs. BTW love Dagny’s taste also. She has a great shop on EBay!

The large vase was a vintage J D Durand rubis vase by luminarc. They are pressed glass. They came in clear, ruby and amber, and were in 3 different sizes. The smaller ones are pretty common here in the UK. Hope this helps. ☺️

Temptations is sold on the QVC homeshopping network. It's not too expensive but nice looking. They often have it in casseroles sets of 3 different sizes.

The quality of Temptations is not good, easily chips and cracks. Can be bought for half price or less at the QVC outlet in Frazer Pa.

You always have such good luck at GW. I went to one the other day and one of the workers brought a cart into a narrow aisle with about 5 or 6 shoppers and literally started pulling stuff from the top shelf and tossing it into the cart. A piece nearly hit me because she missed the cart. This all happened while I was trying to get out of her way and out of the aisle. Needless to say, I will not be going back to that GW.

I believe that piece with the stone carvings is Korean my mother has a large screen with soapstone figures just like that from Korea that she bought in Korea the black lacquer and mother of pearl are pretty too, It’s very nice and I wish I had found it :-)

Those fish. Love,love'em. I had never saw the fish before either. Watching your Goodwill comparing it to mine. Makes me nauseous. Mine puts out few good things but the price is crazy marked up. I mean 9.99 for a bowl,6.99 for set of 4 glasses. I try to stick to just my lil hometown thrift shops. They have good stuff and even better prices. Always clean items. To say it nicely I've divorced Goodwill. Lol.

I’m obsessed watching these vids. Been selling a lot of stuff from my grandmas house where I now live and am cleaning out slowly but I’m learning a lot about prices and what not. Sold a ton of railroad stuff because my grandpa basically had a rail museum in the basement abd worked for the iHb in Indiana. That’s pretty much all gone now.

I don't know the value of the abacus either, but let me tell you, they are difficult to find. I was a homecare nurse and had a pediatric patient that could have used one, I looked all over here in Michigan and even went to some specialty shops, many places had no idea what I was even talking about. I eventually found one at a dollar store and bought it but that was well after I had left that particular client. I think I still have that dollar store one tucked away somewhere, promised myself I'd never throw it away. Never even thought of looking at Goodwill, of course this was 11 years ago. Thanks for reminding me about it. : )

10000 Villages is a great fair trade non-profit organization, it used to be run by the Mennonites, not sure it still is. They buy handmade goods from artisans and craftspeople all over the world and sell it here in the state, all of the proceeds go back into their mission of helping disadvantaged people.
