I know it's an old vid, but I just ran the Lydd 10km last weekend and it's completely flat and I hit 10km on GPS a few yards over the line so bang on. I did my first sub 40 10k and the top three finishers were all sub 32! Ross Skelton did a 30 min one there in 2019 too. So a good one to keep in mind for PB attempts in future (it can get a bit windy down there sometimes though).

I feel your pain Ben! I ran the 5k too. I ser a lofty ambition to get a sub-20 (previous PB 21:07) and I used your 5k training plan which I loved. Great news is that I ran on pace and was given an ‘adjusted time’ of 19:52 but obviously gutted that it counts for nothing!! Particularly with so few races to give it another go. I didn’t know the course was short till I crossed the line in 18:12 and then immediately knew it was wrong! So frustrating! Love the vid! With regards to the rant though: keep in mind that during official measuring of a certified course, the shortest possible route that can be taken is exactly the race distance. So if it is possible to cut a corner, the corner will be cut for the measurement (it's up to the organisation to prevent corner cutting when unwanted). This also means that you will always run a longer distance than the distance of the race. The same holds for example for a 400m track: the outer edge of the inside line is exactly 400m, so the runner will always run slightly longer. Ofcourse for a 10K your GPS should not reach values like 10.5K during good wheater conditions and an open terrain. However, a good GPS watch can have a 1% error during optimal conditions, which can result in a 10.1K run for a 10K course. During suboptimal conditions (bad weather, bits of forrest, large buildings, etc) this error can be increased by a lot!

Sorry - I know this is an old video but i had a relatable story - the first year I did london triathlon they said in the race briefing, one short loop, one long loop on the bike, if you do it the wrong way around you will be disqualified. During the race the turnaround point was blocked off by tape. No marshalls around. No one knew what to do. Some pushed through. I went to the next point I could turn around and did the short loop plus some extra and then my long loop. Added 4km to the bike leg. And of course, in the results, lots did the short loop first, lots did the long loop first. It didn't matter, everyone was in the results.

Interesting about the course marking. I’ve only done about 4 or 5 races ever (it took me years to get the confidence to enter one) and have had that happen to me twice 😮. Only one organiser apologised and neither refunded me. The last one was gutting as they deliberately added a 400 metre loop at the last minute to make it Covid compliant and they admitted this to us all afterwards. On Strava everyone was about 10.38 to 10.42km. My goal was my first ever sub 40min 10k, but I got just over 40 minutes because of the extra 400 metres! I wonder if they realise what a faff periodisation and tapering is, or whether they think we all just run the race as we would a normal daily run?

The gps/race distance thing is always annoying. We have a local 10k that has a windy path through the bush so it always comes up short on the gps. RunThrough have been exceptional this year in providing a safe race environment where, let’s be fair, most other race organizers have failed. One of which was an elitist organizer (who also organized a race Ben recently raced at) who resorted to name calling of participants of another race just because they lost their license. Look at it this way... you’ve just got yourself a shiny new 4.59k PB. Winner.

Funny to see Bens rant about course distances. Recently did the Brighton Marathon that wasn't measured correctly and not only did it make BBC news! They also had to go back and change the winner to the person that was ahead at 26.2 but not at the end 26.7 As someone whose come to Running via Triathlon, believe me, it's appalling there! Don't think I ever ran a correct distance. And a well known German Iron Distance course is deliberately short so they can claim "record times"

Hey Ben, love your channel and appreciate your frustration, but do you think you're putting a little too much stock in a GPS reading? Even if the reading is perfect on and out-and-back course, it's probably going to come up 10.1k, so only takes a few turns here and there to throw it out a bit more. RACE the other competitors and let the time take care of itself. Or do a track 10,000m if it's really bugging you?
@BenParkes4 жыл бұрын
9.9 or 10.1is fine with me.. I’d never question that. but the races I saw were all 500+ meters out.. which is too much! I’d always be the first to say to others run the course and not your watch, but the watches are pretty accurate these days and when everyone who runs gets that inaccurate reading you have to question it. It now seems there were a couple of dodgy courses and the organiser has rectified it now.. but all the races I found were from when they’d set up the course wrong.. frustrating for those who ran it!

Ugh, hate the worth way after countless marathon miles on it in the past. The footpath that you stopped at early on is a much nicer path, very lumpy and takes you out to worth Abbey. Also, the worth way actually starts at three bridges train station, not the church where you started (not that you missed much). After east Grinstead you can take the forest way which goes on and on to Tunbridge wells. That's much of a sameness as the worth way (flat and boring).

You really cannot trust GPS on race distances. I've been involved with two parkruns where the course has been measured by wheel and GPS measurements vary wildly. Particularly true on courses with u turns and lots of twists and turns. Some races do get it wrong but far less often than the GPS does.

In Spain the problem isn't so much inacurately measured courses but, outside the big cities, no one really cares if their course is 5k or 10k. So you get to run accurately measured 9.6ks or 5.3ks. Strange.

@@josephgonzalez_ cool! The other reason could have been the 5k runners would likely be significantly quicker than others out there.. so the bike can be used to warn runners faster people are approaching / clear a path and keep everyone safe.

Ran my first ever half marathon this weekend! Went well, but it was tough because I had never ran the 13.1 distance. If you want to see it check out the link kzbin.info/www/bejne/l3ebZKlsbL6nprc

Could you measure your own course somewhere? Or do it on a track? I guess you want the official race to make it an official PB and race conditions etc.

I can understand the frustration of an incorrectly marked course for sure. However, consider that this year is so challenging and race organizers and volunteers are no doubt stressed and overworked... and concerned about their own health and safety being around a bunch of people at a race. There is so much human suffering going on at this time that I find it hard to complain about anything.

It's okay to complain/be frustrated about something that affects you. Doesn't diminish what other people are feeling and experiencing, or mean that you don't care.

But... I can run happily at 35-45 degrees, when everyone else melts.. have always struggled to keep warm in the winter though, running or not!

@@BenParkes Fair enough. I like both cold and hot. Variety is the spice of running
