Seeing Nick Heidfeld's lap really proves something I've been preaching since I got into motorsport in the early 90s. Looking at the numbers only it would seem that Nick was an average driver in F1 at best, yet seeing his run it is evident that he's from another planet when it comes to car control which only proves that if you get to sit in an F1 car and you can qualify and finish races you are indeed the best of the best and shouldn't be considered "a bad" driver if you don't have a bazillion podiums and seventeen million world titles. I feel like that's a trap in which a lot of "top trumps" F1 fans fall into.

If the McLaren F1 car had slicks instead of grooved tires it would have been even faster. Full slicks can mean a half second or more difference in over all time with ease. The FIA forced F1 cars of that era to run grooved tires in an effort to slow them down.

@KaDuWin
@KaDuWin 3 жыл бұрын
@@jaccoet9894 No they don't, I am a racing instructor. The heat up the tires is dependant on composition of the tires, suspension design, and driving style. Grooved tires havr less rubber area meeting the ground which means less grip. The FIA enforced grooved tires in a direct effort to limit the speed of the F1 cars. They previously made similar efforts to slow down F1 cars when they banned ground skirts and ground effects after they were introduced by Chapman and Lotus.

No Name I don’t think it was on road legal tires (could be mistaken) and also the hillclimb is relatively slow speed so many all out circuit racers aren’t able to best utilize their aero advantages. But definitely not trying to play down the awesome achievement that Nio did.

I much prefer the sound from outside the electric cars. I know they're quiet, but I like to hear what the spectator hears, like we do with all the IC engined cars. Certainly better the whoosh as it goes past than the whine from the onboard camera

@ALMX5DP
@ALMX5DP 4 жыл бұрын
bert1981 sure but crowds haven’t been banned and fast cars still run up the hill. The ban was F1 cars, and while they might be faster than the IDR I don’t believe they’d necessarily be any less safe doing so.
@bert1981
@bert1981 4 жыл бұрын
Alan Bowers it’s in a relation to how the cars make their speed the idea has torque and traction on its side an f1’s big advantage is corner speed. Just look at the amount of run off required for a modern f1 circuit. Not running modern f1 for times is the right decision for safety and it’s also the right decision for the crowd they get to see the car hear then smell them even feel the noise instead of a noisy or not so noisy flash as they fly pass.
