Today we give you a short-term review of my John Deere XUV865R Gator. I don't sell Gator's, so rest assured this is an honest review (let's be clear though, any review I provide is an honest review!). I'll cover things that I'm very satisfied with as well as a few things that leave me disappointed. It's hard to find a Gator review like this, so hopefully if you're in the market for one, you'll find this helpful!

I thought about one of these for checking my irrigation wells and moving cattle, then I saw the price. I ended up with a very nice early 2000's chevy pickup for a fraction of the price that is much more comfortable and has greater payload and towing capability. Those look fun, but I'd rather buy an old jeep if all I cared about was offroad stuff.

As far as I can see there's hundreds of attenitives to buy which can do much the same job. At 35k that's a load of money for loads and load of cheap plastic. If your name is Bill Gates and you have money then since this is the machine for you. God you can buy a all singing and dancing pick up truck for the same money. You might even have enough money left over to paint it green and the wheels yellow. 🤔🤣

We have the 865M model for a little over a year now. 170hrs on it. Full size truck vs Gator isn’t the best comparison. The best explanation for this is driving the unit around the property for small chores. Moving firewood, moving hay for the animals, taking the trash the half mile to the end of the driveway. My wife can back this up without jackknifing it. She is the smartest woman I know, but she can’t back up a trailer to save her life. This unit is fun to drive, aggressive tires go anywhere and 11gal diesel tank is massive. We wish we purchased it earlier. Enjoy what it does well. No radio wanted on our unit either. The music of that Diesel is fine for my ears!!! Nice content in your channel. I enjoy watching.👍🏻

The downward-facing nozzle on the air filter is not the inlet. It is the outlet for the particle separator. In the J.D. Tractor manual, you are supposed to give it a squeeze periodically to open it to allow trapped grit to escape. The air enters from the backside and does a reverse direction inside the filter back to base and out a different pipe. You'll be fine!

If the entire head of the filter is clogged, then it's a problem. This isn't my complaint necessarily, but is a widely known complaint voiced by folks who have owned this Series. Otherwise, I wouldn't have brought it up. As several others commented in this video, JD introduced a filter mod kit to relocate and address this concern.

The air box design has been an issue literally since day 1. I purchased a 2019 835m with a gas motor and Boss V blade. It does not have the cab nor is it as loaded as yours but I bought it for $15,000 with a few hours on it. I find this little Gator to have more spunk than I was counting on. I really thought it would be a dog but was happily surprised. Careful if you put a hitch in the receiver and tilt your bed all the way up. IT WILL HIT AND DENT YOUR REAR TAIL GATE. Popped back but left a little distress mark on the gate:( Lastly mine runs at a top speed of 45mph. The governor keeps it from going any faster and frankly that is fast enough for me. This is my first UTV and I absolutely love it. I do agree that the transmission engagement lever is not always very friendly to engage. At this point I have 140 hours on it and it has been problem free. All the best! Jeff

This is a great video; nicely done. I've been considering a Gator but have recently been leaning towards a Honda Pioneer 700, after hearing of numerous and varying complaints about the Deere SxSs. I've had John Deere tractors/ products in the past and have never had issues; Deere has remained incredibly reliable on those fronts. However, from what I've learned through research is that the Deere SxSs seem to have a lot of common mechanical oriented issues experienced amongst owners. Also, the Honda that I've been considering allows for a smaller and lighter in weight unit while still having the integrity and build quality as well as retaining the higher payload and cargo carry capacity. I'm still on the fence and really want to justify the Gator.

We use 2 -4 seaters on our Ranch. I have nothing but green here for all our heavy equipment, so after checking around, JD is the only side x side company that has a cattle protection rail for the unit which we need. So thinking these are built as well as the tractor line was my first mistake, SAVE YOUR MONEY, ours see daily use, both out in the field and in our garage, I spend more time and money fixing them than we do running them. Oh yeah, if you think the purchase price is high, wait till you have to start buying and fixing. Buy a truck it's cheaper. I can go to the nearest town and buy a NEW truck for the same price and it will last years more.

FYI: the diesel engine has the same muffler/spark arrestor as the gas engine. It WILL get plugged with carbon particulate. When the power drops off first thing is to clean the muffler/spark arrestor.How to do that is all over the place. Solution is to gut the innards but who wants to do that on a low hour expensive unit. Could be an aftermarket direct bolt on replacement for it but I haven't looked.When the power drops off you're going to first think the CVT is going out. As far as your concern about the gear selector while plowing there is actually an easy solution for that. Not sure if you knew this but the “John Deere” branded plow on your gator is actually designed from fisher plows made up here in Maine. I’ve plowed snow commercially for 10+ years and my first setup had the same plow control joystick as your gator and you are right it is a pain in the rear end having to steer, shift, and control plow with that setup. But I then got the handheld controller that is called the fish stick (fisher plows product name) with this style controller you can put your hand anywhere that’s comfortable while plowing including the shifter and be able to push the buttons to move the plow at the same time as shifting. Makes it a lot easier and smoother. Also the more you use this hand held controller the easier it will become because you will find a way to hold it that works best for you and have the muscle memory to push whatever button you need without even looking at your controller. Like I said above even though your plow is branded as John Deere they actually copied everything about it from fishers trailblazer UTV plows. So if John Deere doesn’t offer the hand held controller then find your closest fisher plows dealer or just order online. As long as they have the matching electrical plug connectors they will work.

@@edwardwood6532 Our town parks department has one, more or less it's used for fairly light duty stuff. It also sounds like a chainsaw when it's running around which I find odd. The town has a variety of equipment and the most expensive of it is a pair of Trackless MT tractors used for plowing the sidewalks in the winter and grinding down uneven sections of said sidewalks. They have other attachments on them but mostly winter sidewalk maintenance. I think our town was out of its mind when it bought a brand new Deere tractor instead of sticking with Kubota or New Holland. Although, it does have a large Deere front end loader for plowing the smaller streets in the winter (I find this weird since it's bigger than the plow trucks and has no salter, turning the neighbourhood streets into ice hazards) The other thing the loader is used for is loading yard waste into a tractor-trailer in the warm seasons. I think we all need to start reconsidering Japanese machines like Hitachi, Kubota and Komatsu as they value having things made in the countries in which they are sold. Deere and Cat basically said, "We're too greedy to pay the wages of workers beneath us so we are moving to Mexico."

A Gator definitely makes sense for some, for me a snowmobile for ice fishing and the deep snow we get upnorth has more utility, and when the snow melts I really like using the tractors. I rarely need to leave the property with a tractor and the speed of the UTV does not justify using a UTV over a tractor. Lastly, my better half would probably make me sell a tractor if I wanted a UTV, and that would be unbearable ;)

Thanks I enjoyed the video. Fortunately I live in Tampa Bay Area of Florida so snow and cold is not an issue. I use my Gator every day on my property here (3 acres) and just love it. The only regret was not getting it with a hydraulic dump bed but that was cured with $900.00

Great video, I could see a dead battery really being a problem. Especially when you need to raise the bed to fully access battery… I have a 825i I picked up for around the house and commercial snow accounts and to check the oils you have to raise the bed …. You shouldn’t have to raise the dump body to check the fluids…luckily on mine the air filter is inside the cab and along with the battery… the fuel fill is too… not so happy about that . I bought the 2017 to get my feet wet before I pull the trigger on a new one to make sure I’m making the right move . $40k new!!outfitted with what I need

Nice honest video. I have a 2021 865M with the same plow. There is a learning curve when it comes to that plow. But I too have to say installing that plow is not easy and I know what I'm doing. After a couple years of use EVERYTHING SHIFT'S and it's almost impossible to install the plow.

Good video. I am in the market for another XUV. I have owned a 855D diesel Gator for 11 years. For the most part, it had been a good vehicle, with the exception of the electric power steering constantly throwing a fault since it was new (which the dealer can't figure out) and having to replace the centrifugal clutch drive. But I see, not a whole lot has changed in 11 years on the diesel models, except over doubling of the price. Same tailgate, same clutch, same steering, etc. I am now seriously looking at the Kubota RTV-X1100C. The diesel has more HP, it's drive system is hydrostatic, the dump bed is fast hydraulic as well as the steering is hydraulic. The cab is air tight with metal doors. The top speed for the Kubota won't be as fast as the Gator, but I am not buying it for speed. The best part about it? The price tag for the Kubota is almost $9k cheaper than the Gator. Keep putting out great videos like this one. I just subscribed to your channel.

JD tech here, on the battery situation, I agree it is inconvenient, however, all you have to do is take that side panel off. It's just a couple of torx screws and a couple plastic push pins.
@themightywingman

Also, the gas version is WAYYYY more "peppy" and can reach about 45 MPH top speed. Both gas and diesel versions are work horses when it comes to climbing hills.
@WJCTechyman

Torx screws? Really? Why not just standard hex head screws or bolts? Where the battery is those torx screws will corrode and you will ultimately end up taking the machine half apart just to drill them out. Not surprising there are disposable push pins as well. Are they a proprietary size as well like most of Deere's line? Do you sell them for a 150% markup like the rest of Deere's line? The whole thing is made of Deere's PlastiCrapTM panels anyway. At least when you buy a Kubota, the thing will keep going after decades of use. I deal with a Deere dealer, but it's only because it sells Honda.

John Deere should make a Crocodile; big brother to the Gator. So, the "Croc" would be hydraulic with a minimum of 50 diesel horse power. Immediate attachments that come to mind: snowblower, blade/plow, bucket, grapple, sweeper to name just a few. John Deere has had plenty of time to expand their UTV offerings, and haven't, why? Doesn't Bobcat have 2 different versions; a 25 HP & a 50 hp? I've heard the later is a $50,000.00 machine, but it can handle all of attachments I just suggested for the "Croc". I have an X595 with a blower, blade, triple bag catcher & I think a 54' mower deck, spreader, 1500 cart. I like the Gator; I keep waiting for the snowblower attachment to come out; year after year? This is what brings me to Croc. Sitting on the X595, year after year in 10 - 15° temps is starting to get old after awhile. I'm a green & yellow guy too. This is why I just can't do the Bobcat thing; ,,,,,,,🤔 or can I 🤗 ⏲️ ⏲️ ⏲️ ⏲️ 😎?

I have an older 850D which I love. Roof but no cab or windshield. I bought it with 700 hours for $8,000. I had been looking for a diesel because I have a diesel tank at home. Diesel tractor and zero turn. It’s currently at the dealer for annual service and to get a winch installed. Road speed of about 30 mph is fine with me. I mostly drive in a field or woods. Great low end torque. I pull logs out of brush or swamp occasionally so the winch will be handy.

I’m sitting in my house waiting for the 16-22” of snow to get here. We have about 8” on the ground now. I have a 835hvac with a electric over hydraulic straight plow in it and a Kubota 2320TLB. When it comes to plowing snow IMHO it’s like this. Plowing snow with the Gator is probably the hardest thing I can do with it, and plowing snow with the Kubota is probably the easiest thing I do with it. And that’s EXACTLY how it feels when you’re using them to plow snow.

I'm going to go ahead and throw my 2 cents in. I bought a new 835m (gas) hvac the week before Christmas and it replaced my 590m gator i had. I have put almost 400 miles on it and it's a good machine. It is a cross over and you can hit the trails with it but this machine was designed to be a work horse. I use this machine on my farm and for my property management business. The low end pulling power is very impressive and speed is good. This will not replace a tractor by no means but makes a good support vehicle and one heck of a deer stand. I was kinda worried about the cheri engine that this machine uses (It's Chinese) But so far has performed well. My only con with this vechicle is it uses a lot of rpms to move and stays around the 4,500 range under light loads. Best i can tell is max rpms is 6000 to 6500, so basicly you are running the engine fast all the time and in my pea brain thinking will wear out faster. I would love to see a lower speed clutch, are at least give me the option to adjust. Over all i love this machine and so far has served me well. The price is what you expect to pay for something with a cab and air, just my 2 cents.

Ours gets used every day, even in the winter with a blade for plowing walks, playgounds, etc. The top speed is fast enough for off road, it is quick and nimble for property use over a few acres.

Well the 3 cyl gas motor with 54 HP does 45 mph. While diesel with 22 hp does only 32 mph. But I am sure if all things being equal the diesel would have more low-end torque. But a CVT will always rob low-end torque. This Gator needs a sequential shift manual.

For all the side by side available, the specs are above all for working and price. I know we have 30 hours on the clock and have used 7-8 gallons of gas, I also didn’t get many options but our battery is under the passenger seat and easy to get to. Batteries on the JD tractors - UGH! I have a 2017 1025R with only about 110 hours on it and had to replace the batter a couple of months ago. What a hassle! I couldn't do it with a bad arm / shoulder - the angles and weight of that battery were too much. I had to have a service tech come out. He had to take out a headlight - the full assembly, not just the bulb - detach the battery, angle it up on it's side and still barely slide it up past the bolts that hold the headlight assembly in place. Absolutely ridiculous. Nice Gator rig, though. I wouldn't have a use for it personally but it looks like a lot of fun.

Wished you had lifted the hood to show what is under it. In 2018 I bought a brand new Kubota RTV with cab /heat /AC for $18,200. Mind you I didn’t get plow or winch at that price. It serves my needs well on my 70.5 acres. Kubota Diesel engine is bulletproof and I never would have considered a gasoline model. Gear selector is a bit clunky, but gets easier with time and practice. You learn to jockey the shifter a bit like you might do on an old tractor to learn the sweet spots where shifter easily drops into gear without any fight or resistance. I’m small and the interior seating position and pedals and tilt steering are perfect for me. My much taller and larger neighbor is not comfortable behind the wheel of mine. I have zero tailgate open /close /latching issues and my battery is 100% easily accessible, as is the washer fluid tank and multiple radiators. I opted for no radio or turn signals which would have been several hundred additional. Shortly after getting it I wished I had gotten turn signals for safety when I get out on the road (2 lane state highway) in front of my farm. I like the lights on yours. I need to add rear aimed lights for backing up and general lighting for the rare times I’m actually out in it after dark. My engine oil filter is very difficult to access. Maybe it’ll get easier with practice. Nice video and love your dog. Thank you. I’m in the market for a brand new or very slightly used 75 HP 4WD John Deere cab tractor to replace my 1996 John Deere 5300 open station tractor. The deere was not an option as we use it recreational as well on our farm but for recreational there just is not enough ground clearance and air filters and a lot of other things. As far as the CVT you could always add a clutch kit to get you more off the line speed and top end. Lots of people make the after market clutches and they are easy to install . Great review! Couple things, I have the gas version and it’s a bit faster but the clutch is a pig (like 0-47 in 10-minutes, LOL). Anyway, to charge or jump battery you should see posts near that washer fluid bottle. There’s a winter front shock upgrade you should swap out when using the plow, front end sits up more proud and it’s a fairly quick/easy swap and will save your front end. If you haven’t already, move your plow cylinder arms to the outer most holes to get a little a wider clearing angle, looks like you’re a little narrower than machine width as it sits. You can also get a remote (wired but not fixed) plow controller which has a hand strap allowing you to shift while adjusting plow. The 2021 has a way better shift design but again the remote will still help immensely with that shifter. Make sure to lube (or armorall) the door seals as they tend to start leaking air/water in a short period of time. I haven’t reviewed how your plow attached/detaches, but sounds rough. The new Boss V is pretty quick, just FYI. Lastly, throw a couple large shims/washers on the left side of tailgate hinge point (I think it’s about 1-1/2” id?). to make gate close correctly every time. I’ve had almost all the same issues so far, worst being the leaky door seals which I finally figured out how to adjust properly and keep lubricated. Keep the videos coming! Oh, and haters are gonna hate, work hard/play hard!!!

I have the 835R gas and have had it for two years. It will run 45 mph and actually haven't noticed much different top speed when loaded. I will say the shifter and transmission are poor. Deere finally caught up with the competition and got the shifter up off the floor but it just feels weak and "janky" to me. We have had MANY Gators since the very first front single wheel models and used them for many years with my hunting business. I've had every model they sell and this is by far the Cadillac, however, it's out costs the competition as well. The parking brake location and transmission shift is new in the 2021 model and I will probably trade if it seems to be noticeable better. I will say, they are very solid machine and I have had them in every situation and tested them beyond what John Deere would probably recommend both in hauling capacity and terrain. They hold up and stand up to whatever you dish out.

@@GoodWorksTractorsCash is the way to go. I bought my tractor that way too. If side by sides are like tractors, they do very well holding their value and you got a deal. 👍

@@GoodWorksTractors I’m from Canada, I feel like $35k Canadian would be too much for this thing. But 35k USD is 44.5k Canadian. That’s just crazy.

I’ve been looking at side by sides for years and they have come a long way as far as performance and creature comforts, but the main thing that keeps me from buying one is the price tag. I can’t justify spending $35,000 on a side by side when I can buy a good used Toyota Tacoma 4x4 low mileage truck for example that can do everything that a side by side can do minus the tilt bed for far less then $35,000.

Yes Tacoma’s are amazing. If you want a ITV I would recommend a Honda pioneer. We have over 1000 miles and not a single issue. We also have a can am defender 6x6 which also has been great. We have had 2 Polaris and both were junk

Good Review! I had a lot of time behind the wheel of the Gator 825 with the Chery 3cyl Chinese Motor. It's a decent SXS, the weight definitely makes move like a turtle walking through peanut butter! The CVT does not aid in any performance-driving that is for sure! Love the channel, just earned a new sub!

Good job. I’m looking for a setup for the mountains of North Carolina. (I found my dream property 😊) I think your video helped me decide on Diesel vs gas. I’m thinking torque for hauling uphill. I’ll be sure to check out your website when it comes time for goodies.

I have an 825i gas Gator and top speed is about 45mph. Much better pickup than the diesel.

Good review, nice looking machine! Does the $35K figure include plow and salt spreader? The Kubota RTV 1100c is over $20k with no options. Really easy to add a handful of options, plow and spreader and get to $30k+. I hope you and family get as much enjoyment out of that machine as my wife and I with our RTV-1100c.

I had been looking at one of the 3 axle Gators till I saw one of the Can-Am DEFENDER 6X6 Outfitted the way I want a 2023 is still less then that 865R with a lot more capabilities but still hard to justify the price tag for a UTV even as a work machine for property maintenance. The six wheel drive would be really nice but still I think I'll just keep looking for a decent used Jeep scrambler. That is In less I come across a old scout lost in one of these barns around here. Hay one can always dream can't they.
