The Goodyear blimp is an American Icon for sure. It once came over our farm and the crew and passengers would wave to my family members. I loved the drone of those old engines.

These new Zeppelin NT airships are lovely to fly and ride in.My first time piloting one as a guest was the now former Eureka at Airship Ventures in Mountain View California.A current pilot can still have this experience in Friedrichshafen, Germany(Luftschiffbau Zeppelin's homebase).So sad that the Californian based company is gone but it's great that Good Year is flying these graceful aviation ambassadors.

I have always wanted to be a pilot but never had the resources to do so. Keep up the great work and keep 'em comin". thanks for all you are doing. I feel like I am in the cockpit with you. I still have a lot of videos of yours to watch to catch up with your progress. I really loved the video on how you got started into aviation as a career. thanks for taking the time to bring some joy into our lives. I grew up in Spring Texas right across the street from a good year blimp base. Years after it left the band Genesis rented it out to prepare for their world tour in the late 80's or early 90's. It was cool to go listen to them jam!
@AndyBraithwaite19638 жыл бұрын
That was cool. I managed to get 20 minutes flying the old blimp back in 1990. Before fly-by-wire the pitch control was a huge trim wheel as too much movement was needed for a column to work. Our Goodyear pilot gave an interesting demo, he pitched it about 20 degrees nose down and the airspeed decreased. It seems obvious afterwards that with an airship the lift and pitch are unrelated as they are in a fixed wing a/c.

I was about to post this same comment. Since it's basically secured only by the nose, I was wondering if it's to somehow alert the crew if he notices some sort of emergency with it getting free while they're inside. Otherwise, I'm stumped.

My guess will be to scare birds away. I did flight training out of PMP for a little and they have a lot of bird activity in the airfield, I think they are attracted by the landfill just NW of the airport.

This is a Zeppelin NT, built in Germany. Unlike the old Goodyear blimps, the structure is actually rigid, and there are bags inside to hold the helium. There was a company in the San Francisco area called Airship Ventures, and they gave tourist rides on a Zepplin NT like this one. Unfortunately the rides were kind of expensive and I think they weren't able to make the business work so it no longer exists. I was fortunate to go for a 1-hour ride on the Zeppelin NT, and it was absolutely fantastic. It's very quiet inside compared to a typical small airplane. The windows open, and when we were flying over Oakland you could hear the sounds of the city below. You're right, Steve, by the way, the view from that seat in the back is amazing.

Blimp pilots are a rare breed. Less than 2 dozen in the USA. Over 800 applicants with at least 40,000 hours will apply for the one position. I'm not sure about this pilot but one of them is a former F16 Thunderbirds pilot. To me this pilot also seems to be ex military. Maybe that's the 8 years experience in flying he mentioned.

PMP is mah home-base!... it was in Summer of 2005 that duh GY Blimp crashed in nearby Coral Springs, FL, caught in the downdraft of a thunderstorm. As a commercial pilot with an instrument rating I have technical questions. Do you fly IFR...ever? If so what are ILS approaches like? Do planes have to wait a long time & be sequenced to fly the approach behind the blimp? What's it like in the soup? Is spatial disorientation just the same on the blimp?

I have a lot of history with the Good Year Blimp. :) I lived just blocks from Midway Airport and one day in the 60's while riding my bike the weather was dark and ominous all of sudden the air raid siren started whaling and I looked up and not 100 yards away was the old Good Year blimp coming down towards me. I thought it was Ming the merciless from the flash Gordon TV show. Special effects in those days weren't the best so the blimp looked exactly like the space ships and they flew just as slow. Man I was really scared until I read the name Good Year. The siren went off as a test in those days the cold war was full on. Mom would always tell us that when we heard that siren get home because it meant the devil was coming. Our neighborhood was in the glide path for the blimp which is why it was coming down. pretty awesome. Years later I ended fueling the blimp for Butler Aviation. Back then it was 5 gallon jerry cans two at a time to fill it. I do remember the wheel chair like he was saying. The new ones have come a long way. Thanks for the memories Steveo

Amazing artefact! Now 2 questions Can the blimp stay quiet (static) in the air? If it's yes! for how many time? Why is it so noisy? 🤔 They're going to have to copy the tech from the one who was in NJ. Zero noise! 😉😊
