We wanted to show you how a pair of goodyear welted Human Scales shoes are made. So we decided to film every step in the making for you to see. The welt is made 100% by hand as opposed to using the Goodyear stitching machine. The style of the shoe being made is called Wholecut Lt Brown. Have a look at our complete range at

Although I agree with you in that I think most styles of Jordans are absolutely garbage and hideous. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder and if you think they are right for you and if you can afford them then go for it! However the problem is Jordans have a high price tag and are often marketed to people who do not have a ton of expendable cash. This is the true crime, that the Jordan trade has such a dark history, keeping the poor, poor, providing low quality product at ridiculously high prices, and child slave labor. When I look at a shoe like the ones made in this video I see art, beauty, something to be enjoyed. When I look at a Jordan I see something cheap, ugly, meaningless, and harmful. The rabid fans of Jordans will kill their Mom's for the next $2,000 pair that comes out, despite often being in severe debt and having little to no income. Surprisingly though, I will say, Jordans continue to have a decent resale value, which does not give credit to quality rather than demand. It is the fans that put value on these shoes not the quality of how they are made or how they perform. I think that is the argument that Jake Wittenberg might have been trying to make. Given the quality of the product, the handmade nature, these shoes should be worth way more, Jordans being mass produced in a factory, and last a fraction of the time in use, well they just are not as good of a product for the price. They are the shoes for the depth-less, the carbon copy-wannabes, the band wagon hoppers. Jordans are not shoes for free willed, independent, classy, adults. Just my opinion and I am sure a ton of Jordan fans will get pissy, but it is not likely they're watching videos of how quality shoes are made so I think I am safe. They are too busy watching videos out there on how to pay more for less.

@@ProceduralAbberation agreed. I gotta admit that all fashion industry is harmful to the environment in general (chrome tanning residues, mink oils etc.), but "Fast Fashion" industry and hypebeast culture however is on a whole new level. It really does a detrimental damage to our planet with its synthetic material it used mainly. Those branded sneakers mostly aren't even durable nor it will withstand years of use, not to mention that the same people who bought pairs of collabs shoes ain't bother to repair/resole their shoes and likely buy a new one every 3 months for the drip.

Jordans are expensive because of resale value and collectibility. Everyone buying those shoes knows they aren’t amazing quality. It’s the same reason people collected baseball cards back in the day or magic cards now. They’re just pieces of paper, and everyone buying them is aware that what makes them expensive is their rarity

True craftsmanship like this is a dying breed. This was fascinating. It's a very labor intensive process to make a goodyear welted shoe. It really puts it in perspective when you wear a shoe like this that it's not just a shoe. It's a piece of art. Fine work, gentlemen

I thought you were supposed to add some cork paste or filling between the soles.
@spencerlee7852
@spencerlee7852 3 жыл бұрын
Cork filling is only necessary with goodyear welted shoes, this is a handwelted shoe, which is a step above and cork filling is optional. Goodyear welting requires you to glue a linen canvas strip onto the insole, this creates a protrusion around the shoe that the machines can easily use to stitch the welt. This also creates a cavity where you would fill the cork. As you can see in this video, the cobblers cut into the insole and directly hand stitch the welt. Machines can't stitch the welt directly onto to the insole because you have to stitch at a curve, so handwelting is reserved for the most expensive shoes.

Nice work. Question, you do not find, when sewing the upper with the liner outside, that it changes the shape of the top line around the ankle? I’ve had this problem…. I understand the difficulties, using a flat bed sewing machine to do this part. I usually just sew the top line by hand to avoid this problem. Maybe the way you pre-glued it prevents issues? I usually only glue the adelaide and just the very top edge.. I am curious to see how they turn out. Excellent, thank you for posting!
@MindbodyMedic

Excellent demo video because it shows a wholecut shoe, which is one piece of leather and according to what I've heard a little trickier to get exactly right. This is natural crust leather as well, no pigment or colour until dyed at the end with patina. Note how he trims the liner at the very very end then dyes/paints the exposed piece. V labour intensive which is why a 'mostly handmade' shoe is gonna cost you $300 plus. To be honest, anything less than that is usually an inferior product.

Hi nakikiusolang! at 3.40 they remove the nails. Is that what you meant by nails? The grey marks is only leftovers from the nails. I guess some sort of oxidation from the metal nails. It only looks as if they´re still there. Is this the answer you were looking for? Have a great day!

Shrink1061 there is a misumderstanding of terms here, but goodyear or hand welting doesent refer to whether or not the welt goes all the way around, it only refers to how the welt is attached. goodyear was a process developed to eliminate the need for the labor intensive process of hand welting, so the terms really shouldnt be used together. goodyear welting relies on a rib sewn or glued to the perimiter of the insule so that the upper can be sewn to it by machine. hand welted is the process.shown here where the upper is stitched at an angle through the insole.

According to it's definition a WELT is: A leather rim sewn around the edge of a shoe upper to which the sole is attached. And honestly, that's exactly what I think of when I hear the words "Goodyear welt" or "storm welt", or just the word "welt" alone, for that matter. But what about a "blake welt" aka "blake sewn"? A blake welt/sewn doesn't have a piece of leather (or other material) around the rim of the midsole, so does it even constitute as a welt? It's missing the seemingly most important part of a welt, i.e. the leather rim (unless it does have it and if so please tell me, lol). Is this why I often see it being referred to as "blake swen" as opposed to a blake welt? And if a blake welt is indeed a type of welt then the above definition needs to be revised. Because a blake welt is a process where a stitch goes through the top of the midsole all the way through the bottom of the outsole via a stitch. That stitch continuously goes around the rim of the midsole joining the midsole and outsole. Now according to Google's definition above, this is not a welt beacuse it doesn't have a piece of material like leather that is sewn around the rim of the midsole. I would like to know what you guys think about the welt on this boot in the link below. Their website describes it as having a "Thick leather welt". It's quite hard to make out but when I zoomed in really close I can see what appears to be a leather welt on top of the midsloe. But this clearly isn't a Goodyear welt, so what is it? If it does have a leather welt but isn't a Goodyear/storm/Norwegian welt then what could it be? I'm so confused, lol. Help. goo.gl/dJCUvV

great craftsmanship on these shoes, verry impressive. to those great craftsman: please stop dipping your fingers in toluine based glue and using it without a resporator, you will have guarnteed brain, liver and kidney damage. also a small point, the title says "goodyear welt by hand" which is a little misleading. the goodyear process was specifically developed as a way to replace the labor intensive process.of hand welting with something that can be done by machine, so using the two terms together isnt really appropreate.
