live steam. the choice for craftsmen on lathes, and such machine tool. all owned by rich people. poor folk like me could never afford one of these locos. ho scale locos cost a lot for my wallet.

Couple major things to consider is what gauge you want to run, the amount of money you have, and the size of the stock you want to run. Another thing what is generally useful with miniature railways is knowledge in engineering so you can make parts and fix bits on Locos on Stock. Hope this helps :)
