Project Soli is developing a new interaction sensor using radar technology. The sensor can track sub-millimeter motions at high speed and accuracy. It fits onto a chip, can be produced at scale and built into small devices and everyday objects.

Yep. Then again, unlike Google, Apple has always been very cloak and dagger with their r&d in development. They always have been more interested in building on [sometimes violently] acquired tech rather than developing from scratch.

Pixel 4 is here and they decided not to put the full functionality from project soli to the pixel devices. Instead they choose a approach where dispite of having all the hardware available to use soli, they will make it seem like they are improving this tech on future pixel phones so that they can capitalize on soli’s functionality as longer as possible. A tech which was available since 2015 will fully penetrate the market by year 2025 or so, just because of the corporate greed. What a great world we live in!

Part of the allure of robotic telesurgery is the force feedback element of the manipulators. How are you going to recreate this sensation solely with radar?
@captainkesh
@captainkesh 5 жыл бұрын
@@MikeTrieu great point. i have no idea what the current mechanisms are for dealing with this problem. you are right there is only visible feedback with something like this unless you could wear some kind of mechanised glove that responds to the robot arms sensors and then latency is of course an issue as well.

@pilotavery
@pilotavery 8 жыл бұрын
No, not at all. It wouldn't be able to read a face, you would need a camera for that. (deaf and fluent in sign language, also an engineer) The difference between "I got it" and "I don't understand" is purely with different expression. The difference between "he is late" and "hasnt happened yet" is sticking your tongue out making the "th" sound. The face, shoulders, and depictive verb classifiers make up too much grammar, so much that the meaning gets lost if you cover the face. the grammar is different, so it also needs to be interpreted/translated. "finish touch never" means "never have been to before" or "past happen what finish touch touch 13th, total wow" translates to "I have been there thirteen times in my life!" etc. Google translate breaks the languages enough. also no signs for "be is am are" etc. signs don't translates to words the same. like "have you eaten cupcakes?" doesn't use the sign for "have" since it only means possession. it doesn't translate.
@VulcanOnWheels
@VulcanOnWheels 8 жыл бұрын

Bert Visscher SEE isn't used though, except to interpret between asl and English, so the only people that would use it already are hearing anyway. It's to relay English to a deaf interpreter to interpret again into asl. Deaf people don't use SEE, so it would be useless.

¡Chulísimo! El reto más gordo que veo aquí es cómo dar feedback al usuario para que «sienta» lo que está haciendo. Quiero decir que si yo me pongo a hacer un gesto en el aire, necesito saber que estoy «tocando» lo que quiero tocar, y no otra cosa. No me gustaría ajustar algo que no es lo quiero, ya que tengo intentar volver a dejarlo como estaba y a continuación volver a probar con otro gesto o un poco más al lado a ver si acierto con lo que quiero hacer.

+J_laubster Well you wouldn't need them for some applications, but when you're playing a shooter and are supposed to be holding a gun, it wouldn't help with immersion. Sure you could use your fingers, but I think holding a controller with enough of a gun shape to it and some good haptic feedback would be miles better. The REALLY good usage of it would be to use both devices in tandem, best of both worlds.

The experience of moving a physical object is really different from making the physical gesture that simulates the moving object. While I congratulate the team for the technical achievement, this gesture control makes us all into mimes who have to position our bodies as if there were physical things there while there are not. I suspect the power of this gesture control will ultimately come from gestures that are organic to what is comfortable for bodies in space, rather than this simulation of manipulation.

I view them all as being applicable to the modern world. There's always some futuristic aspect that makes what's happening more obvious and clear, but it's all the same. For instance in Be Right Back - people will keep the social media accounts of their deceased loved ones around, and look back to them just to read words that person wrote. So the robot is sort of an extrapolation of something we already do. I see each one as an allegory, like The Veldt or 1984.

*Simply fascinating use of radar* My first thought is for people with parkinson's disease and could this technology still be a useful tool. I wonder if the research could discount certain movements for people with degenerative muscle or nerve damage and help them interact with computers down the road. h/t ***** and Yifat Cohen

+Ron Mecredy We all tremble - it's just a matter of how much. They've likely already built it to learn how much you shake and discount those unconscious movements. I'd think your suggestion is exactly how this will be presented (or at least a potential highlight) when it is launched.
