How does shopify knows when to fire cutom events like view_product, purchase and push that particular event data into GTM Datalayer? I think that is what is missing in this video.

IMPORTANT - In order for this to work you will also need to make sure the Google Tag Manager code (head and body tag) are in your "additional scripts" in Shopify In Shopify Go to settings >> checkout >> scroll down to additional settings and paste your head and body GTM script in that box >> save In my case, I am also using the Google Sales Channel in Shopify. After troubleshooting and meeting with many of you, it seems this method works if you are using the Google Sales channel app in shopify. I have not been able to get other sales channels like simprosys to work.

Hey ZoCo, I added GTM code to Additional scripts as well but it's not working. I noticed that the Tag assistant at the corner of your screen stays there even you reach the checkout. Well, once I go to the checkout it disappears for me (maybe this can be a useful info for you to figure out what happens)

Great guide! However, after following the steps, and adding the scripts to both "additional scripts" boxes in Shopify. The GA4 Ecom Event is not firing. Was there any steps not mentioned in the video or something missing. I read through the comments and some people are saying they found a solution to the problem but I don't see any.

Thank you so much! Had so much trouble trying to figure out how to track purchases, and purchase conversion value on shipy with GA4, literally no good video resources. I have a question however, when I import tag manager into my google ad account and use that to track sales from paid media, will the tag automatically know what sales come from my google video ads, or will I still need to use UTM peramiters onall of my videso to segment the traffic and track the ads that way? P.S. I tried setting up a standard conversion event on my google to track purchases directly on google ads, but for some reason it is tracking an unidentified event and assigning my default purchase value to it (I have dymanic value set up), no idea how I did that wrong, I followed your tutorial so any insight on either of these would be super helpful! My google analytics account is now tracking all ecopm events and revenue, however its been over 24 hours and the custom tag event we created is not showing up when I try to import the GA4 event from web. I followed this tutorial twice and I am sure I've done it properly. I even just tired unblinking and relinking the G4A account to the google ads account. Any advice?

Great tutorial. This may be a dumb question but do you actually have to make a real purchase during testing to make sure that purchase event is coming through or am I missing something?

If your website is already getting sales then you don't need to make a purchase to verify this thing. Another good suggestion is to track if tag is getting fired in preview mode, if tag is getting fired on checkout page/thank you page then I think you are good to go!

so i think it only works when the shopify subscription is premium as without datalayer this thing doesn't work. To add datalayer to shopify checkout page, you need a premium subscription to shopify (no customisations for the checkout page are allowed for basic users), am I right?

This does not work. When I get to the 'order-completed' page the GA4 event does NOT fire. However, if I manually reload the page then it fires. However, it should not require a reload of the page for it to fire. Something in the instruction is wrong.

Yes, you will want to mark your UA conversion in Google Ad as a "secondary" event if you are going to use the GA4 conversion.

I’ve followed all steps, and If I run a preview everything works, untill I go to the check-out page (GTM-tag-assistent then loses connection) I’ve followed all the steps, and added the GTM-tags to the and section of theme.liquid file. Also added the data-layer-code up in the . Both tags (head and body) are also in “additional scripts”. I’ve been trying to figure out what’s causing the GTM tag assistant to lose connection when on the check-out page, but haven’t succeeded yet. Do you maybe know what’s going on? After viewing the page source of my checkout pages, I saw that the GTM-tags were not even there. eventhough I've added them. Then shopify support told me it's not possible to add GTM-tags to the checkout.liquid file, unless I become a shopify plus store......... Are you familiar with this?

IF THIS IS NOT WORKING FOR YOU: the reason why this it's not working for everybody is that when you link Shopify and Google Ads, the link is supposed to create a Data Layer automatically on your store. The problem is that this Data Layer doesn't show up sometimes and this is due to the Google App. Loves Data has published a video about this and said that you have to ask Google why the app is not working properly.

I have the problem, that I can see a purchase in GA4 Real Time (purchaser), but when I go to Monetization -Ecommerce purchases, it does not show up there... it has been like 30 min. Also the other main issue I have is, that the conversion / purchase is not shown in Google Ads Conversions (Parchases from the import of GA4), it just says under Status "No recent conversions". I did all as you showed in the video, added the GTM code (head and body) to additional scripts in shopify as well as in head and body, but it just does not want to count it in Google Ads. Any advice?

Hey, you should start seeing conversion values reported within 24-48 hrs. I had the same issue and today I am finally starting to see revenue being reported. Assuming you did everything right, just wait patiently.
