The $1,299 Chromebook Pixel cost the same as the new MacBook. It comes with a higher resolution display that is touch screen (touch screen is very expensive). It also comes with a powerful Core i7 CPU which can last up to 12 Hours of battery. Actually, iVerge said when they tested theirs it was 14 hours. So you definitely don't have to worry about battery life as apposed to the 9 hours (Apple claimed). You're also going to get double the RAM (16GB). This comes with two USB-C on each side and also regular USB 3.0 ports along with a SDXC card reader. A 720P Wide Angle camera, the MacBook's 480P camera is worthless, they shouldn't have put anything, anyone using it would need to buy a new one which means more $$$. Then you have the X factor, you can install Linux and even Mac OSX on the ChromeBook. But even though it beats the new MacBook in almost every department, like the new MacBook it's not a product I'd personally buy. I prefer a more powerful computer as I do a lot of graphic design and video production, so this would be something I would rarely use. If I wanted to browse the web I'd just use a tablet.

Having read many of the comments here, I think some people are missing the point of the Chromebook Pixel. It’s well suited for two purposes: to be a showcase vehicle for Google Chromebooks (sort of like a concept car at an auto show) or, as Mike pointed out, for developers who have to work for hours within Chrome OS and they want high quality hardware to do so. For the masses, however, a $200-$400 Chromebook is more than enough for their purposes and shelling out $1,000 would be crazy. I think Google is already well aware of this.
@DetroitBORG9 жыл бұрын
ron bZoom Exactly, and since nobody else shared Google's ideal hardware vision for Chrome OS, Google has done it themselves. It also makes it a sustainable effort without threatening 3rd party manufacturers who are making far more mainstream options.
@EddyWerckx9 жыл бұрын
***** Another point that I never hear mentioned; I'm a business person with an investment in the Google/Chrome infrastructure. I'm glad to have a more "upscale" hardware option. I don't code. I'm not a developer. Frankly, I feel a bit awkward slipping a plastic Chromebook that looks like it was made by Fisher Price out of my bag in a client meeting. The intended use of a Pixel? I'm sure not. However, it works for me.
@JoshUnwin9 жыл бұрын
Developers who want to work exclusively with Chrome OS is massively niche though. It'd be way more appealing to them if Google built Android Studio/JAVA development over Chrome OS (yeah I know there are some web IDE's but from what I can gather they don't seem great).

A smarter choice is to get a computer with windows or mac so you are not restricted in what you can do, and the price is fair.

Just to be clear, not bashing the review (which was excellently done as usual for this channel), just the blatant pilfering by Google of software features that aren't common enough to be considered an 'industry standard'. Mission control was one of the reasons I fell in love with Mac OS, and for it to be unashamedly ripped off and used in a Google product, as well as the 'shelf'' (read: 'dock') is annoying.

@housepianist8 жыл бұрын
First of all, there are Chromebooks that are way less expensive than the Pixel 2. Secondly, you are correct in saying that a PC can do the same thing. However, what you're missing the point of why people use Chromebooks. PC's are more complex, harder to maintain, and less secure than a Chromebook. And by nature, they will get slower and buggier over time. But if you're the type of person who downloads exe files or has the need for specific Windows functions, then a Chromebook is not for you. But don't dismiss it because it doesn't do everything a PC does, especially if you don't need all that extra nonsense that Windows has. If all you do is browse, listen to music, watch media, and many other web-based activities (which is what most PC owners do), a Chromebook is all you need. It's much faster, doesn't slow down and get buggy like PC's do, doesn't require virus or malware software, is more reliable than any Windows machine can be, is faster, and it's updates automatically. For what Chromebooks do, it's a far more superior and much less troublesome than any PC. And with more powerful web apps to do more PC-like tasks and the impending arrival of Google's Play Store, there will never be the need for a Windows machine ever again. I get my work and play done much more efficiently. But yeah, you can do those things in Windows too. But with my experience, they're not worth it over the long run. After at least a year, I've always had to start doing some form of maintenance and upkeep and I eventually start spending more time trying to keep it running than actually using it. Not for me but then that's just me. #WindowsNeverAgain

You can go into developer mode and make it download ubuntu, then you can easily install it and you can basically swap between chrome os and ubuntu by pressing a button on runtime, in less then half a second. It's amazing.
@PerfectBlade209 жыл бұрын
I'd consider this for 1K. You are paying for the hardware and amazing build quality. Chrome OS is all I need since everything I want to do that isn't video game related can be done on the web. If I do feel like using a full OS I could install Ubuntu EASILY. Haters are simply hating on a product that isn't for them. Do you need to run downloaded programs? Great, chrome book isn't for you now move along and stop clicking on these videos, you clearly know what a chromebook can and can't do so don't bother people. It is like someone with a Xbox one bashing the fire TV for not playing AAA video games.

I bought the Pixel 2 after making the switch from a macbook air. So far I dont regret the decision one bit. Hardware wise everything is better on the Pixel. I was going to make the upgrade to apples new macbook but i couldn't deal with the core m. Even for just word processing and web browsing you can notice the difference in power.

Hey Mike... I've been following you for the past 2 years. This is my first comment on your video. I need to know this... Why is everybody stops thinking something new except Apple...? Every faint tech industry in the world is copying Apple. Even the packaging, power adapters, etc., shame on you google, Samsung and a lot of companies that are copying the design from Apple.
@DetroitBORG9 жыл бұрын
Anandh Azh Apple is a very design-centric company and their culture is built around creating alluring designer products. And like all cutting edge fashion and design, it always influences consumer aspirations and the industry responds by following those trends. Most companies don't have the culture or design expertise to innovate or set design trends like Apple.

*ATTENTION EVERYONE: THE CHROMEBOOK PIXEL IS MADE FOR DEVELOPERS, NOT CONSUMERS. STOP COMPLAINING ABOUT THE PRICE; YOU'RE NOT MEANT TO ACTUALLY BUY IT.* The Chromebook Pixel is not sold in stores, it's not widely advertised, nor are many of them even being manufactured. I think Google only makes a few thousand Chromebook Pixels at most. Regular consumers can buy them at Google's store but it's main purpose is to be used as a reference device for Chrome OS developers. While Chrome OS is a very minimalist operating system that doesn't necessarily require such high-end specs, it's good for developers to be able to take advantage of high-end specs. Already Adobe and Google have partnered to bring Photoshop Streaming to Chrome OS. Whether you like Chrome OS or not, you can't deny that it's a growing platform that's becoming more popular every year. If you have no use for it, fine, but plenty of people do. With the growing popularity of Chrome OS devices, it makes sense that Google will try to push its limits with devices like the Pixel so developers can make attempts to see where the platform can go.

No, they built it as a reference device for developers and are simply offering them for the public if you want one. There are no huge ad campaigns for it and they're not setting out to make a fortune selling them.

I really don't care about what you think about Chromebooks. Most people who claim to have an opinion haven't even used one. People who complain about not being able to install Windows or "Insert OS Here" don't understand what a Chromebook is for. It's for people who want to use web-based applications but want the form factor of a laptop rather than a tablet. I keep the Toshiba Chromebook I'm typing this on next to my recliner and not once did I ever regret not having windows. I had a Windows laptop and realized I didn't need an entire OS to do simple stuff like cruise the web or read email. That is overkill for when I get home from work. Frankly, I use Windows at work all day and being able to get on my Chromebook is a nice break.
