because 1080p is a horrible compromise when u even jump to 1440p. ( So ugly. loss in clarity... sharpness.. eye ease legibility ) Heck I would never consider even returning to a 1080p phone after 2k AMOLED where the true darks are just so sexy and sharp with the rise in pixel sharp fidelity. And I can't imagine that most phone owners can be happy when returning to 1080p is such a negative experience comparatively. I suppose TV viewers might convince themselves but anyone who lives in and relies on the crisp sharp advantage fidelity gives the GUI interface... There is no comparison? Id rather have the color accuracy of HDR than 4k... But I at least want 1440p (which also gets me speed too )

These people are not hateful - they've had makeup tutorials demonitized, they've had coming out videos demonitized and put on adult mode - as well as videos for the youth to tell them how to handle being gay. Many of the creators I watch have had up to 90% of their stuff demonitized. It's not ok at all.

TriFlix Films agreed. I think this all started with PewDiePie's prank video where he got some Indian guys to hold up a sign that said "kill all Jews" or something. Exidrial - TriFlix and I were having a reasonably respectful discourse, and the only trolls here are on the red side. Specifically, El Diablo, who's suggesting that elimination of the freedom of speech regarding lgbt issues is saving lives. You're also clearly here to passive aggressively take shots at liberals under my post mentioning lgbt issues, while pretending you're speaking to TriFlix. It's not helpful, and it's quite hypocritical, given the content of your post.. My primary reason for posting this was not to have childish arguments, but to comment on the video, which suggested that conservatives were being hit harder than liberals - I only wanted to point out that it's affecting both sides, and perhaps we should put differences aside regarding this issue, as it affects us all. Perhaps it was a different video that suggested the red side was being hit harder than the blue - I don't recall, but I definitely remember Linus saying that primarily only hate speech being removed, and I was pointing out that very important, and completely hate-free resources are being defunded.

To the Google and Facebook topic: there is no way I would even consider paying the fine or changing my policies due to a bill introduced in a particular country. I would tell them that it is not the responsibility of the company unless the content is abusive or threatening in a manner that violates an individuals rights. I would tell them that if they want the content removed then they need to submit that request through the proper channels and that my company will not be dedicating internal resources to police the users of my product.

1:10:20 The Universal Declaration of Human Rights, Article 19. "Everyone has the right to freedom of opinion and expression; this right includes freedom to hold opinions without interference and to seek, receive and impart information and ideas through any media and regardless of frontiers." preamble "Whereas disregard and contempt for human rights have resulted in barbarous acts which have outraged the conscience of mankind, and the advent of a world in which human beings shall enjoy freedom of speech and belief and freedom from fear and want has been proclaimed as the highest aspiration of the common people" "keeping this Declaration constantly in mind, shall strive by teaching and education to promote respect for these rights and freedoms and by progressive measures, national and international, to secure their universal and effective recognition and observance, both among the peoples of Member States themselves and among the peoples of territories under their jurisdiction. " This says nothing about private platforms. these rights are meant for governments to write laws and secure for people. the freedom of speech still applies, it is the freedom of association would be a better argument to justify the advertising revenue to discriminate. "Article 17. (1) Everyone has the right to own property alone as well as in association with others. (2) No one shall be arbitrarily deprived of his property." This is a weak argument still. Because of the monopolized nature of large social media. it has become the best and only platform for the little guy, and so the implementation of such policies are to large to simply say that "a private company owns the platform. take it or leave it" because the effect is that those people are stifled in their speach they are encouraged to self censor for monetary gain systematically.

I agree with your sentiment, but I disagree with your conclusion. KZbin, as a company, has the right to *not* host beliefs with which they disagree. The big problem that I have with KZbin's exorcising of that right is their virtual monopoly of internet videos. KZbin does not have a proper competitor and it needs one. *DESPERATELY*. I support their right to filter the content that they host, even if I disagree with their targets and the lies that they tell to justify their filtering.
@becauseitscurrentyear83977 жыл бұрын
I'm not blaming KZbin. They have fought hard to allow content. It is not them who is in the wrong here, it is the governments, dinosaur media and corporations that are doing this. l would argue these social media sites are being compelled to censor politically inconvenient content.

@becauseitscurrentyear83977 жыл бұрын
+Keith R That is my point. KZbin and Facebook are not your house. They are platforms for communication that were developed by company. My argument is that KZbin or Facebook or Twitter are public platforms much like the town square. This censorship is being imposed on the internet as though it is like tv broadcasting however it is not, its a conversation that the whole world is having, and Facebook and KZbin make up the majority of traffic. this comes at a time when governments are threatening to fine 50,000,000 euros for not removing "fake news" fast enough, while people are arrested for online decent, the propaganda wheels are turning full speed and failing to keep up with the internet.

In advertisement, the people who are buying those advertisement spots are the customers, not the people who are watching the videos. And as paying customers, they have the right to buy what they want, and if they don't get what they want, they have the right to refuse to buy it. This is entirely between the seller of advertisement (KZbin) and the buyer of advertisement (Advertisers). The opinion of third parties (video viewers) is completely irrelevant.

First things first, let's come out with an accepted definition of hate speech. Here's my idea of it: Hate speech is any type of media intentionally provoking violence (including discrimination) against a particular group of people. Hate speech can no longer be considered down to political opinion when the arguments made are primarily based on logical fallacies, and are more nuanced than they are presented to be. For example, the following hypothetical headline would not be hate speech (I don't actually agree with this position, I'm just using it to illustrate a point) It's not the taxpayers' responsibility to pay for transgender surgery in a socialized healthcare program You can see that, while this is an editorial, it does calmly present its idea, and does not encourage grabbing of pitchforks, nor is it intentionally inflammatory. However, this hypothetical headline IS hate speech BREAKING NEWS: [Insert Transgender Woman Slur] just used HIS public healthcare to get a nose-job! Those confused wimps are ruining our country! While this has a similar message to the previous headline, the presentation inspires hate against transgender people. It makes a point of using the opposite pronouns the individual prefers to demoralize her, specifically. It also glosses over the fact that a rhinoplasty might be included in standard surgical procedures (I wouldn't know, but we're speaking hypothetically). Then it makes the irrational jump to the conclusion that this group of people is causing the reader harm just because of this anecdotal evidence. This inspires fear to back up the hatred of these people. In short, the difference between hate speech and legitimate political opinion is in the presentation. If it appeals to the lowest-common-denominator, it's probably hate speech. Basically, if you publish content which takes a stance against a group of people, you don't get to have an advantage over the basic facts of reality simply because your text makes a couple of rednecks who probably didn't even read enough to understand the debate anyway angry. Don't publish bullshit.
@magottyk7 жыл бұрын
Your summary excludes an important distinction. It's only hate speech if the target is a protected group. That's the problem with definitions of hate speech, because for the rhetoric to be called hate speech requires discrimination against non protected groups as it currently stands. The fact that protected groups exist is discrimination of itself and one could argue that it is hateful towards the unprotected.
@samharris35087 жыл бұрын
That's the point though. Free speech is there to protect things that are completely offensive because offensive is a subjective thing. What I feel about your expression shouldn't preclude you from expression nor should it preclude me from thinking things about you. Point is, sure it may be a scummy thing to post completely bullshit articles, but they are well within their right to do so, and are we willing to sacrifice our 1st ammendment right, just in an effort to not hurt feelings? And where would it end? It could start off as innocently as, "lets pass some laws so no one can post anything or say anything the could possibly offend anyone". And could it potentionally snowball into where opposing views, are completely silenced, all under the guise of political correctness. The only way to prevent from ever happening that is to protect all speech, even offensive speech.
@SbotTV7 жыл бұрын
+Sam Harris, you should remember that nobody is suggesting that the government ban this type of speech. Google, being a respectable company with its own interests, should have some clear and transparent policies dictating what it will and will not support. Nothing should stop users from simply typing in the URL into the search bar and going directly to the site. Google doesn't owe any money to us, directly, so we are not entitled to a portion of their ad revenue. They have a reputation to maintain to keep advertisers happy (they are a company, after all). Obviously, they want as many advertising opportunities as possible, which means posting ads on as many sites as possible, but they can't start supporting sites like the Silk Road. As such, it should be clear what types of media Google finds acceptable. Right now, they want to disassociate from shitty tabloid-esque publications, now referred to as 'fake news'. We should be glad that they aren't just out-right banning them. It's their website, they can do what they like with it. If you don't like what Google is doing, there are plenty of other search engines out there (for example DuckDuckGo, use it, it's great!). When Google is the only game in town, then we can start worrying about infringements upon the First Amendment.
@samharris35087 жыл бұрын
I agree with everything you said. It is its own enterprise and they can police it how they see fit, others will crop up to fill the void. I think the issue that I see and what a lot of other people see, with the whole deomonitization issue is, with the Mainstream media dying and with their trust in the American being virtually nonexistent at the moment, they needed to blame someone or something for their low viewerships. They saw that some youtubers got more traffic through their channels in a single day, than the MSM could get in an entire week, and a lot of those channels were labeled conservative channels. Google leans heavily towards the left, and the channels that they deemed offensive or inappropriate were demonitized, a lot of the conservative channels i follow seem to have been hit hard while the liberal channels seem to be okay for the time being. A lot of people see this as a way of filtering information for the public eye, by cutting the funding for those channels. Again google and youtube are well within their right to do so.
@samharris35087 жыл бұрын
It just seems that the right side is being hit harder than the left, and both sides spew about the same amount of fake news crap on to this site. It does not appear that youtube is concerned with "fake" news as much as they are with silencing the opposition, with step one being demonitizing them. I could be wrong, i tend to follow more conservative channels than the liberal ones, but there seems to be a definitive trend.
@moswoswaggorn21377 жыл бұрын
Just to be clear: The law Germany wants to pursue is not putting a 500.000€ fine on not deleting fake news within 24 hours but rather not deleting them when they have been reported. And as far as I can tell it also says just people that are directly offended by these posts are eligible to report them (meaning companys or groups of people).

The problem with marketing/branding is that it shifted from a focus on product usefulness to a focus on how the product will give the consumer an identity. A message of product usefulness is not impacted the same way as a message of identity is, when the advertisement appears before a vulgar/crude video. I for one watch this channel (and others like it) because I like to be informed about the products I spend my money on, and I don't allow myself to believe the lie "if I buy a this pair of rgb shoe(or fill in whatever product you want), I will suddenly be cool"

If the main parties were ever serious of having a more free and fair election in the States. They would federalise the national election process taking power away from red or blue states from changing voting laws. Eliminate gerrymandering and improve everyones access to voting for a start.

Well apparently there is the other issue with KZbin ads, a lot of people are getting singled out as a channel and not having ads shown even if the video don't violate rules and are supposedly monetized.

Traditional publishing companies have NEVER made money online. Their problem is that on-line is a fundamentally better way to deliver information than traditional media. It's faster and cheaper. Because it's both faster and cheaper, people aren't willing to wait for the next paper to be delivered. Because it's so much cheaper, there has been an incredible increase in content out there, which makes it a matter of supply and demand: the supply for content has greatly outstripped the demand for it, causing people to not value it as highly. Since so few are willing to pay for content, the only way for content providers to make money is to operate on ads (and let's be clear, most major papers have ran ads *in addition* to their subscription rates). Ads reward eyeballs, eyeballs can be gotten by tabloid headlines (well, now we say "clickbait" but it's the older term for it).

The thing about being associated with hateful things is that the percentage of people who look at an ad and straight up think "oh my gosh coke specifically is aligning themselves with this nazi here" is inconsequentially small. Almost everyone on KZbin is either too young to see the content let alone care about what ads are on them or they know at least to some extent how the system works and know it was put there automatically.

17:00, can't agree with Linus that the PS3 was ahead of PCs at launch considering the 8800 was out around the same time (same month iirc?), and was way ahead,and pretty well stayed as relevant as long as those consoles. By virtue of launching a year earlier the 360 was interesting though, being a unified shader part a year before anything on PC. And lets avoid the 2006 wars again and suffice to say the Cell was a mixed bag, loads of SIMD power that even rivals the Jaguar cores today, but SIMD isnt' what a game spends all day doing.

nVidia screwed up with the naming of the Titan series. They should have named them after the Titans of Greek mythology. Start with Coeus for Maxwell, Crius for the first Pascal version and then Cronus for the newly released one. No more confusion other than pronunciation.

23:00 It's been my contention all along (even before release) that from Valve's PoV SteamOS exists simply as insurance so that they're not at risk of getting destroyed over night by something MS does to Windows. That's it. It doesn't need to make money. It doesn't need market share. It's insurance from total destruction at the hands of a convicted monopolist. An escape pod. The actors who jumped in on Steam Machines presumably did so on their own volition (for who knows what reason), or were supported by Valve for their own reasons. Think about it this way; How much would you be willing to pay to insure LMG against a real, albeit very unlikely company-destruction event? You probably have SOME sketch of a plan for if KZbin suddenly becomes a non-option for you, one would hope? Valve is a very wealthy company. They probably have like 3-5 people working on SteamOS. That's very cheap insurance that could keep the company ALIVE long enough to respond to sudden changes to Steam's viability on Windows, be they product or legal. Now do you see how SteamOS makes sense?

I think KZbin need to realize there are still channels that don't give a crap about making money. It's about the fun of making videos and the community. That's actually how KZbin started. Let's see different mechanics for "for profit" channels than "for interest" channels.

Going back to that thing that Linus said "You don't even have to go to Wikipedia anymore to get an answer". I think a great solution to that (page views numbers) is that when Google pulls an answer from a certain page, it also actually goes to that page, cranking up the view count. Even artificially. I think it might make up even a little bit for users not actually going into written content creators pages.

"Controversial" and "Hateful" content are not clearly defined or they're not applied consistently. If the rules and guidelines were clear or fair, then CNN/MSNBC/any major "news" outlets would have their ads pulled from their videos for addressing the same information as smaller independent content creators.

One of my biggest regrets is buying a 65" 4K TV (pre-OLED/HDR).... And even now, all I'd care about is OLED and HDR, not 4K... And this is coming from someone who would rather buy Blu-Ray discs than stream because of the difference in quality... I went out and bought a UHD Blu-Ray player, and then returned it because you might as well just stick with regular Blu-Rays... There's just no difference at regular living room distance....

When people are clicking on "preachy" or "rant" videos that sound too extreme, they don't see it extreme when it's preaching to the choir. Most people would agree that the viewer does know the difference between an ad and video content, but big businesses have the right to pull their advertising content for any reason. Obviously, they disagree with that since actions speak louder than words. But when "extreme" videos get that much ratings, the one to blame is the viewer. Thumb it down, don't subscribe, and click "uninterested" when you see their thumbnail video and tell them why. Most people would agree that every outlet is one sided and I don't blame the media because the viewer is the one feeding them ratings in the end. Maybe big businesses have or are considering pulling ads there too. It would seem consistent if they did.

UHD shines when you don't have a native resolution on the input. 1080p looks great in most rooms but not when you are trying to render 4pixels with 9 (or vise versa for people who have 720 TV's) the grids don't line up very well. 720p looks better on a 720 screen than it does on a 1080 screen. so short of having multiple televisions that you swap based on content it makes more sense to have a display where the resolution scales into it or just a vast surplus of pixels so the processing is at least impossible to notice. you don't buy 4k or UHD for the 4k or UHD content. you buy it so all of your content is displayed without compromise in clarity/sharpness it may not help with contrast ratio or dynamic range on its own, but it is useful. I'll give you that 8k is a bit of a gimmick, if the resolution doesn't scale well into UHD it's possibly low enough that you won't notice any improvements that could be made. but I could imagine that 8k would display some slightly off resolutions better, like 1280*768 wouldn't be that great on a UHD , and 720 and 1080 might not be quite perfect on a 4k. 4k or UHD are perfectly reasonable things to buy today even if you never buy a 4k Blu-ray. and if you're the kind of person who can buy an 8k to show to your friends I'm not going to shame you for buying it. I'm not investing that kind of money to sit in my living room but if you have the money them why not?

i absolutely get that youtube reacts that way, and i fully understand and support the decision of advertisers to pull ads when their money ends up in some pocket they 1. do not want to support 2. do not want to be associated with and 3. cant even directly react to...
