There's two objects in the woods that I found on Google Maps. They are located off an old railroad bed and I want to find out if they're still there and hopefully figure out why they're there.

The old way that comestible/used water Aqueduct reservoir system was at community's service.🤝😌 "Progress!", they said!🤖 But wasn't it there yet in Ancient Rome?? Yeah! This way of an operating current water system is still crossing huge through all the Europes!!? And still have huge citerns under some huge towns, that aren't Catacombs..and is now domestically compatible with electricity and nobody dies! There's only 3 or 4 differences i could easily identify and also splits the old way from the modern way to be build the best fonctional aqueduct system, thinked, planned n materialized to this day.. 🎶I'm done!💥😌 P.S: I'm still fascinated by what you're presenting on your vids, the whole thing!! So calming! Some Healthy, Zen, Feng Shui Yoga sceance for the mind. 😮👌🏼

Jay, I would agree with the upper foundation being a water collection basin for filling locomotives. If you look at the 1939 photo, there is a round object off of the north corner of the lower foundation. Possibly a water tower that was filled from the basin? Another great find!!!

Agreed - I truly believe that it was a filling station for the steam engine locomotives. The lower building may have been a coal reservoir, or more likely, a residence/wayhouse for the train crews.

My guess is the upper structure was a reservoir and the lower possibly a valve house to provide water for the rail line. The PRR seemed to favor round stone pools and round valve houses but usually a similar relationship to each other and the line they served

The Library of Congress site has a map named Carbondale, Pennsylvania, 1890, which shows the hillside here. It's hand drawn, so not exactly perfect, but there are a few small factories and structures around where these foundations would be.

Water sources were critical for the railroad for the steam engines Some of the locomotives were designed to draw water out of creeks and storage reservoirs I remember seeing tanks along side the mountains where the tracks were up in rural VT, NH, NY and Canada They had natural little creeks and they built storage tanks of wood that the creek filled and overflowed out of

Your channel showed up in my recommended list, and I'm so glad it did! This was an awesome adventure. My son and I go on a lot of road trips, and we usually take the long way through towns instead of the Interstate because we love to find places randomly. It always drives me crazy when we pass by a place that looks very old and has long been abandoned, and I can't figure out what it could've been, so I can imagine that not knowing what these two objects once were probably drove you nuts, too 😂 Really great channel, though. I will check out more of your videos.

Really relaxing and peaceful journey through the woods. The little spring well was an awesome find and it had some beautiful nature's carpet on it too. The little manmade creek bed and waterfall was also very cool, always love the sound of the water. It was great that you found the structures you were looking for and yes, I am thinking the second structure was used for water too, like a reserve or reservoir or like you said, a pool especially seeing the pipe. It would have been a huge pool for sure and looking at the map, it sure looked like a pool. I think the smaller object was the water tank. It was an old wooden water tank, and you are seeing the roof in the old photos. The larger upper structure was probably a reservoir that filled the tank below. Then maybe somewhere down the hill by the tracks, there would be just a stand alone water column that was fed from the tank on the hill. Or its possible the reservoir fed straight to a water column, and the smaller building was a coaling station, with a roof to keep the coal dry. Which in your old photo, I didn't see a lot of signs of how coal would have been brought in and moved for a coaling station, so sort of doubtful it was that. They did make square water tanks, even though they are a bit rare to find.

Very interesting finds! The very thick walls of the structures indicate it had to hold a lot of weight. They may have been reservoirs for drinking or related to the railroad or as a result of the mining in the area.

The building has been built maybe late 18th, early 19th centry and worked till early 50's. Maybe a water tower or some property. Also, the older American buildings of 18-19th centuries had rocky bottom and upper wooden part. Actually, this design was same to other countries' of the same century. My country is post Soviet and even before Soviets, it was post Russian Tsardom country. And in late 18th century some buildings around the rural areas, especially around the woods and forests, were having this type of structure. Especially old water towers. I bet, this building is old enough as outlaws era - late 18th century.

I'd love to visit this site. I followed the D&H Trail on Google Maps, but I couldn't find a match to the aerial map you shared. I was thinking it was some sort of battlement, the foundations of old lumber mills or just the ruins of some houses. If they were water basins, I'd think there were streams or old creek beds running toward them.

In the days of the steam locomotives, this area was certainly still pure wilderness. Therefore, it is quite possible that the point at which these ruins are located was formerly used to refill water at the steam locomotives. There were also systems in which the steam locomotives were equipped with a bucket system, which allowed them to draw water through water troughs between the rails. Such a system was formerly used by the New York Central Railroad.

The D&H built ponds and catchments there to supply water to steam engines, not to power locomotives but to power the stationary hoists that pulled the cars of the gravity railroad up the mountain. I haven't been able to find an old map showing them but probably the larger structure is the pool and the smaller foundation enclosed the steam hoist equipment. The D&H modified the route of the gravity lined a number of times and when they abandoned it in favor of steam locos, the new tracks obviously couldn't follow the steep grades of the old tracks. That explains to me why those old structures aren't near the rail bed you hiked on. Also, the location of the site was so close to the D&H shops that locos wouldn't need to stop there for water when the line ended a mile west. In your previous video in the same area, the residential road you were on that took you to the brook was pretty much Plane No. 4 of the Gravity Railroad. After crossing the brook, the tracks went up the steep hill to the coal breaker. There is a fire house at one edge of the large cleared area along the highway where the breaker once stood. (New subscriber to your channel. Thanks!)

There's more of these in the patch of woods between Rogers Street and Wayne Street. Again they are right next to the D&H Right of Way. But these are not on any elevation. Also if you ever want to find out which historic picture tile he is showing you. Just search the number on the top upper right of the photo on the PASDA website. Most railroad historic organizations have line Maps that show where every interlock, tower, flagstop, culvert, water refill, ect. Is located. Also cross refrence where the C.C.C. camps were located. Kinda looks like a foundation for a mess hall/bunk house for a camp. But then a lot of C.C.C. camps utilized canvas tents with only 1-2 small stone foundation structures.

i am wondering if the building was a livestock holding area? We have livestock pens up here in some of our old towns and they are made with a stonewall just like that one. the farmers may have left them while they waited for the train to collect them and ship them out. ours are called lost and found pens for the livestock. occasionally horse, cows, or even oxen would get loose and someone would catch them up and put them in the holding pen. one nearby to me even has the wood gate still.

@ 19:19 you can see that the stones laid across the top of the wall follow an arch with keystone design. Also that top layer is separate and continuous all the way around, both features are entirely aesthetic, meaning this would not have been a foundation, and the stream trickling under those dead leaves is not a coincidence, that was in fact a pool. Now, was it a reservoir, or recreational?? That's the real question. Research the architectural era it most closely matches, and see what local town hall records say was there, or closest known structure to there, during the "..." century. Probably 19th century, maybe 18th at earliest.

you said the d&h railway, and then the gravity line, which ran from Honesdale Pa to Carbondale PA. then moved down to Olyphant and on to Scranton, but they used D7H special Loree's to run along those areas The Gravity Line ran though between Carbondale and Honesdale through a series of planes. I know because I live very close to what was the Heavy Track of the D&H

Hi Jay, great videos. I go on similar adventures in Australia. Have you contacted the local council about what it was used for?

Cool video, thanx for sharing, sweet gear boss, looks and sounds great. I really dig all the 'B' roll edited in, gives the video more depth. @7:25 I thought I saw tall, dark movement in the trees, up the hill to the far left, anyone? Can't be too tough of a climb if you can climb up, set the camera, walk back down, walk up again with dialog, then walk back down to get your camera and then walk back up again...hahahaha. Maybe you could bring a metal detector up there and check it out.

All that b-roll is lots of extra effort, but it helps tell the story of the journey.

That pond was most likely water for steam engines. I wish I knew what town is in your maps. I love to use google earth but I need a starting point and you don't like to advertise locations (which I understand account of idiots who go out and trash stuff) but I wish there was a way a guy like me on the West Coast could follow your adventures. I was a 40-year railroader, and I can spot an old railbed in a hot second on Google earth! That camera is wild, it follows you around! Crazy! As info, I've been following you since you and Cliffy were out on that old, abandoned trestle. Hey J.P. , help me figure out a way to get some GPS or info to help me find you out in the boonies. I'll trade you inside dope on historic railroad sites I've worked in my career. I think you're walking around in what was either the crawl space or basement of that old building. And that was a huge building. Maybe if you could get access to some old railroad right of way maps, they usually I.D. buildings and items along the side of the track.

There is a feature like these in the woods near my home, and it wasn’t very far from where an old rr line ran thru, I’ve seen it with my own eyes, walls exactly like these and it did/does hold water from a natural spring.

Also. Steam locos needed a water source low in minerals for the boiler. Otherwise scale was built too quickly.

Another source of information is US Geological Survey maps. Some of those go back to the 1800s. Also, for some places - especially with houses and businesses - there are insurance companies "fire" maps.

Lower structure I would just about bet and agree with another comment on here it was either a valve house or combination valve house and rail house for workers, and top was probably a basin for water to feed both the rail road and house

Do you have access to older maps? The upper structure might have been a barn or storage building, if not a retention pond. Does the county have an historical society? Try them in that case. RGS from Sweden.

You'll probably need to go back to before WW1. Census documents might be another way. Property documents, if available? I'm in Sweden, we have different laws, and a lot of old documents are available online from the Archives

The second item looks like a gravity fed water system for steam trains. Rather than rely on a pump there would have been a trough that would bring the water down the hill to the locomotive.

i would have to agree with unklejohns comment about retention pond for a mill. the stonework screams 1800s. they may have ran the railroad through that area because of that mill. little research in property records or old maps should give you answers. thanks for sharing your adventure.
