I live in Germany and we got Lookaround with Apple Maps last year. And it is insanely good. They have mapped every little road even really remote ones in forrests. Most of the images in Google Street View in Germany are from 2011 or 2012 so they are really old. And navigation is basically the same between the two. So I switched to Apple Maps last year and I'm really happy with it.

One nice thing about Google Maps is that you can actually put emojis on your bookmarks lists. I find it to be very helpful when trying to find one list by having that visual aspect to it beyond just the text when in the bookmark list. Needless to say, that if you decide to have your bookmarks show up on your main page the emoji makes it exceptionally easy to find the category you're looking for.

I feel like the main drawback to using apple maps in Europe - in german speaking countries at least has to be the fact that almost no one uses yelp. So you just can‘t find a big chunk of restaurants or companies you‘d like to navigate to on apple maps- everyone has a google business profile tho so you‘ll always get an Adress using google maps - I personally like the clearer instructions on when to turn and the nicer layout of the actual map on apple maps a lot more so I‘ve been using that a lot.

I work for a public water utility and sometimes we have to assess damages from water leaks to sidewalks, roads, etc. I’ll use google street view to find out if the damage was there before our leak or if a meter box was covered up by landscaping or pavement. Being able to time travel in street view has helped us a lot. One nice thing you didn’t mention about Apple Maps is that you can share your ETA with your friend. So if you two are meeting up by a certain time, you can rest assured they won’t be late and you two can arrive around the same time to eliminate waiting. I use google maps for 99% of my directions in my area. I’ve noticed that G Maps is more accurate than Apple Maps when it comes down to traffic and arrival times. Google will have you take certain side streets to avoid traffic where Apple will have you stay on main roads and avoid neighborhoods. One thing I really do like about google maps is the ability to start and cancel a route with just one button. That is very important to me, especially when this app is designed to be used while in motion, such as driving a car. That means I can tap the phone or infotainment screen on Apple CarPlay one time whereas I have to press the screens two times on Apple Maps which costs so much time and attention away from the road.

One thing to not about Apple’s street view is that it’s actually more advanced. It actually treat things with depth meaning that you can tap a side of a building in the distance and it will take you to the point closest to it. It also makes movements seem more natural. I think this was done using a combination of LiDAR installed on the street view car and some computational depth calculation which I find really cool.

Another bonus feature for Apple Maps that I use heavily is it’s integration with the Apple Watch. When you have navigation active, you can just look to your wrist for the next instruction, and it gives different haptic notifications depending on which direction you have to turn. The same thing applies to CarPlay, if you have navigation active it will seamlessly work across all three at once, whereas Google Maps needs a bit more user attention to make work.

Android user here with Google maps, here in NYC Google maps actually tracks the live position of subways and I believe it does the same for bus. So you can plan on which train you want to take. It does this either through a transit API or more accurately crowd sourced data. It also shows you how crowded the trains are and calculates which train route is faster through transfer based on the real time positions of the trains. Also it mixes transit options, so you can take a train to a ferry to a train. or if the place you are going is in a transit desert, it gives you transit options as close as possible and estimates the Lyft price for each route so you can pick the best one for your wallet from whichever transit station Can someone who commutes with public transit with apple tell me how it works

The one feature that always takes me back to Apple Maps is the destination location when navigating. Google places it in relation to where you are (i.e. north if the destination is north of you). Being able to switch between route overview and focused view is also easier on Apple Maps.

Context directions ie. "The second left after the stop sign" vs Googles 100 ft type of directions. Apple's is far superior. Directions: SOOOOOO many time Google maps tries to be too smart, only to be extremely stupid. It will take you on side streets and back ways because in theory it is a shorter distance, however, there are so many turns and stops and it is usually through neighborhoods with speed limits and bumps that ends up being far slower and convoluted. This has happened for myself and when I'm in Rideshare ALOT. Many times it takes you through parking lots instead of streets. It is beyond stupid.

The main reason why I like Apple Maps over Google Maps is navigation on interstates or big highways because Apple Maps tells you based on your location in which lane you should be to avoid right/left turn only lanes or which is the recommended lane if you are approaching an exit. Something that Google Maps similarly does, but it is somewhat confusing for me when I am driving since it tells you for example " in 1.2mi be in this lane". It is a small thing, but I find it the compelling argument for me choosing Apple vs Google.

I’ve had some pretty bad experiences with Google Maps navigation. The first incident was probably the worst. I was driving down the interstate and decided to add a stop to a Sam’s Club to get some gas (had been in the area once before, so I was sort of familiar with how to get there already). Google had me get off the interstate one exit early even though Sam’s was very close to the next exit’s interchange. It had me go down some back road through the woods with a low speed limit. At one point, it told me to turn down a grassy path (not even a gravel/dirt road). I couldn’t even go that way because a tree was down, showing how infrequent that path gets used. I kept going straight passed more sketchy woods houses until I got to the back of the Sam’s parking lot. I was so blown away that that was the PREFERRED route Google Maps wanted to use. I could’ve just waited one more exit, turned left, immediately turned left again, and been where I wanted much quicker and so much easier. After a few more bad (but not quite so horrible) experiences with Google Maps navigation, I’ve swapped to using Apple Maps. However, I still search Google Maps if I want to find new places like restaurants since Apple Maps doesn’t always have everything on the map (like the places don’t show up in search, and scrolling over the location on the map doesn’t reveal anything there).

An extremely well-balanced and fair review. I work from home, I don't travel that much and when I get in the car there's 90% chance I know where I'm going or how to get there with little to no assistance from a maps app. Apple Maps is my default but I'll venture into Google Maps from time to time (probably less than a dozen times in a year). Of course it's not surprising that Google was the winner as their entire business model is based on getting every scrap of information they can to keep their advertising business model afloat. As much as I love Apple products and services I don't think Apple Maps can ever catch up to Google Maps simply because it's not a core function of Apple's business. I'm sure Apple has a crack team of talented engineers and marketing experts working daily to improve the experience but it's never going to be as robust as Google's because unlike Google they don't rely on the maps app to be a primary profit center compared to Google.

An interesting comparison between the two! Another issue is the amount of data that is used, if your contract with the network provider charges on that basis. There are things that can be done to minimise it, such as pre-loading the planned route via a cheaper to use router at home etc. There are lots of sites that can advise on this topic. The other matter is that both of them are dependent on the availability of communications where you start from. There are parts of the world where it has no access to the map in use. Looking on the bright side, apps like this CAN access up to date maps (when there is a network connection), compared with sat nav systems that carry local copies of maps on board - but we do not actually know how accurate the updates are either. I use Google maps to browse around planned routes on my desktop, and the maps are often out of date, and often their street view output is not compatible with the overhead view - in effect when zooming in, the version changes; weird. The accuracy of this probably depends a lot on their interface with various highway authorities globally, of course.

Hey! Love the content but I did want to update you on the fact that as of right now, Apple Maps will support offline maps with iOS 17. I am on iOS Public Beta 3, have downloaded offline maps for two trips I've taken (one where there was very little cell service at all) and it has been super simple to use. This comes with Automatic updates (toggleable in settings) as well as being optimized for iPhone storage (toggleable in settings), taking up less space than when I tried it with Google Maps. Also, Apple Maps introduced a feature recently where you can use Look Around (street view) when walking and actually see directional elements implemented with AR. I, again, used it on a trip when exploring a new city and was able to easily locate shops, restaurants and more with this feature. I understand that this video can't be constantly updated but maybe a pinned comment or something in the description could disclose these new addons.

It would be a dream come true, if google and apple collaborated to create a common standard/interface (wouldn't be the first time) for map data and reviews. Imo such things should be platform independent and also it would allow google and apple (and other competitors) to capitalize more on the integration in their platforms rather than the information provided

I’ve been using Apple maps exclusively for the past 4 years. I love the UI and what it actually displays on the screen, I use the directions box on the top left primarily rather than the blue line for guidance which is so much clean compared to google maps which is always cluttered. Also, Google Maps never displays what street you’re on which is annoying, It’s like you know where you’re going or you know where you are but not both.

My favorite feature for Apple Maps and the reason I use it primarily is the compatibility with my Apple Watch. Not only do I have a quick and easy view of what’s coming up with that in addition to my phone, it also will vibrate when a turn is coming up, with different vibrations for left and right. Definitely more of a niche use case since it requires an Apple Watch, but a really cool and useful feature if you have one.

I've started using Apple Maps in Portugal when driving because it's surprisingly more accurate and safer. Google Maps has taken me on a number of routes in the past year that are actually dead ends. The reason there were undue U-turns in the navigation was probably due to either lane change route safety (feeling you may get into an accident ) or the fuel efficiency setting... As in it probably felt you wasted more fuel idling at a light than just making a u-turn. That's how i interpreted it when it happened to me on occasion.
@jaerg91
@jaerg91 Жыл бұрын
Fuel efficiency? You burn more fuel driving the car than staying still. Officers will keep their cars on while on parking because turning the car off and on will burn more fuel. So no, that’s not the reason. The real reason is that it may “think” that there’s no way to turn, or that it’s under construction which usually will show but idk, who knows.

I see these (and Waze) more as complementary apps. For me: - Waze is for my commute and driving into heavily congested areas like downtown - Google Maps has a better interface for looking up directions at a starting location other than where you currently are - Apple Maps is what I’ll use for walking/public transit due to its tight integration with my Apple Watch - allowing me to leave my phone in my pocket. That same feature is also great when I’m going someplace new because the haptic taps on my wrist will alert me to an upcoming turn or stop (I intensely dislike audible directions, so don’t use them). TL;DR use the app for the use-case you need in the moment

In fact, we had switched to iphones in oct, and I didn't realize google had defaulted to *not* tracking me, so I missed the first few days. When our friends joined us, and we shared locations through Google, then it started capturing. Hope apple adds this soon. One other benefit of apple maps are the cues on my watch. Nice to have haptic heads-up and a quick glance at the watch while driving.

One thing I think should be emphazised is just how much data google collects when you use their services.. Apple actually annonymizes location services information like routing, traffic or nearby points of interest. They also have something called fuzzing which I didn't look into very much tho it's supposed to hide where you want to go I think. Apple Maps also stores the information where you have been locally on your phone and any info that is going out to a server is disassociated from your appleID and annonymized. It sure isn't the most private App out there but it beats google by miles! Just imagine all the data they collect from google maps users...

I think it's all about the area. The "level of detail" where Apple Maps tells you about all the crosswalks and lights signals to give you the context of where you have to turn. Or mapping out 3D models trees. Things like these are only available in like 40 - 50 cities, I imagine. Same goes to Google maps though like "immersive view" and all. But in your case apple maps is better in UX and LoD because you live where they have taken time to individually analyse building and area and surroundings and reconstruct their models in the app, therefore; the handsfree voice commands and directions. Otherwise where I live, I sometimes cannot even trust apple maps. Google maps despite having less details, still is better in like 2-3 million cities. That's why it must be very reliable for many many users compared to 40 - 50 cities. So Google Maps is better IMO if you're not in the big cities, navigating through them, or travelling across.

This was really interesting. And I can give a perspective on what it's like managing business profiles on both platforms. While apple was the easiest to deal with in proving ownership and being able to access the profile to keep the business location up to date. Apple has this invisible grid thay is hard to move a business. Especially when it comes to fixing seo of a business. Google had hands down been the best and most accurate and crucial for business hits. They still dominate with hit results. The reporting from google about customer feedback and features are way better. Apple may be simple here but they were the hardest to get this up and running. So far Google has this one in the bag as the clear winner in the business management space.

I just had to point out, at “Voice Commands” you give a point to Apple Maps for context clues. For example in some countries (not giving names) there are people who steal signs for fun. At least in smaller areas. I know, its a silly example but I still think giving aproximate distance is way better (also on highways) Edit: another example is city management change signs when there are major changes/repairs coming on some roads/areas

However, I understand that this would probably have added a bit too much complication to the video.

I have an iPhone but I’m team Google Maps all the way. I could literally make this comment thousands of words long, just about Google Maps lol. I live in Scotland and a lot of the Apple Maps features you mentioned don’t exist here - I didn’t even know Apple Maps had street view until right now. I mostly use Maps for looking up places before going there so things like street view, reviews, and house/building numbers are really useful. I also use it on the satellite setting because I prefer how it looks over the default and Google Maps’ satellite images are really good and clear. Apple Maps’ satellite images of my city are blurry and you can’t make out many details, although, they do seem to be more recent than Google’s satellite images so a point to them there. I don’t think Apple Maps will be winning me over any time soon unless they get as much street view coverage as Google and integrate reviews and photos within the app. The latter might well happen soon but unfortunately I don’t think they’ll be catching up to Google street view any time soon hahah

Also as a few other people mentioned outside of the US things do change significantly. Some countries I’ve been to just are not well supported by either Apple or google. Going the Apple Maps left on El Camino route can sometimes take a while. I’m not sure if the second light is timed when going under the land bridge. So there are two lights the Apple Maps way but only one light the Google maps way. Tbh I always LOVE the style and presence of apple map, but google map has one feature that I can’t refuse: keep north up while routing. If Apple map can issue the new version with this feature, I will definitely use Apple map instead of google map. I think this feature helpful and reliable because keep north up is always the main character of map when map is initially invented. Keeping the north up makes me feel secured, since I’m aware of where I am (in terms of which part of city etc). I love this feature maybe because I’m learning geology in school and I always look the map that way, and once they turn to keep your direction up, I feel confused and uncomfortable. Besides, for the saved places, I’d say google map is much better, not because of the view, but because that one is able to make comment to his/her saved places. For example, if you really like a restaurant, you can not only save the restaurant, but also make comment on what is the best food in the restaurant. For the street view, I confirm that in major cities like LA New York or Chicago, it is much better. However I lived in Minneapolis but no street view is found in Apple map. I remembered that Apple map already took the pictures of these medium cities or small towns, but Idk why they still not public them.

Apple Maps has sucked for far too long, but last Fall I made the full switch because the experience was way better than Google Maps and Waze. Where Waze relies heavily on user reports to know that roads are closed, Apple pulls from sources to automatically know or detect that roads are closed. It got to the point that Apple Maps was getting me to my destination faster than Waze every single time. When I went to Japan with my family we relied heavily on Google Maps for transit directions. It was fine but after 5 days we were tired of it underestimating transfer times and the alternate options weren’t great. The rest of the trip we used Apple Maps and we have no issues navigating Japan’s rail networks. We were even able to set preferences to use our Japan Rail Pass on the JR lines which saved us money over the metro lines often recommended by default on Google Maps. The Apple Maps experiences is also great here in NYC. The addition perk of having my Apple Watch buzz me before turns when using Apple Maps on my iPhone is also nice.

I think by far the most important factor here is how reliable the instructions are. Doesn’t matter how nice the app feels to use if the app freaks out in a particular area and costs you ten minutes of trying to find your destination. Both of the apps have this problem, but generally in different areas. You should test out both in your area or have both on hand so you can switch to one if the other isn’t working. They take up barely any space so it’s really not a big deal to have both.

One feature that they both lack is a "Repeat Instruction" button (or gesture).* My car nav system has that and I use it all the time. I know where the button is and can tap it without taking my eyes off the road. So when I miss an instruction or even just want assurance as to what I need to do next, I can get that info instantly with my full focus still on the road. Ideally, the "Repeat Instruction" would be an easily executed gesture that you could perform without looking away from the road. Like a downward swipe, perhaps. I know you can use a voice command to request what your next instruction is, but personally I don't like using voice -- so maybe should just loosen up and get into voice commands. *P.S. If there actually is a "Repeat Instruction" button or gesture on either Google or Apple maps, please clue me in -- I've searched and searched for it.
@StevenKnightArrowood

To repeat the instruction in Google Maps you tap on the green instruction bar at the top. Only takes one tap, but if you've swiped ahead to future instructions, one tap on the top instructions bar takes you back to the current/upcoming instruction and then a second tap repeats the verbal instruction. This is on Google Maps v11.92 on a Pixel 4a 5G running Android 13. I'm not sure if it's the same on iOS because Google does do some things differently on iOS and I don't have any iOS devices to test. Hope this helps.

As someone who did delivery for about 4 years, I used both. Both had their pros and cons, both made mistakes. But as an iPhone user, I used Apple Maps more because I tell Siri to give me directions so wherever I needed to go without having to unlock my phone and physically typed in the address. I’m sure that if I had an android phone I’d do the same but with google maps. In conclusion, both are mostly good at what they do but depending on what phone I used determined which app I would use more

I used to always use Google Maps but that was until I gave Apple Maps a try about 2+ years ago(after hearing about major improvements to Apple Maps). IMO, Apple Maps is underrated. The app has made tremendous strides in the last two years. I have previewed Apple Maps for people who had no idea how it looked and they were all impressed. Some much more than others but still impressed. Which is why I deleted my app for Google Maps and have not regretted that decision since.

My usage of both apps pretty much lines up with this video. Apple maps for driving and google maps for exploring businesses and stuff. Also I find that on apple maps the opening hours for businesses are usually wrong compared to google maps which is pretty frustrating sometimes.

I don't know if Apple maps allows this but in Google maps you can save any portion/area of map for offline use. This is especially useful if are planning a long road trip and encounter phone signal outage.

10:43 this is really useful, Once i went to a town which was old wild west style but couldn't remember where was it, I just went back in time and found out and suggested to friends. Another thing i find useful is it keep track of all the tolls u have crossed so its easy to figure out later and pay.
