Sam Sheffer pretty sure that some others had the same audio problems, and that’s not even considering how trash the XL OLED is. Also, the mic is super peaky and literally hurts my ears with the high frequencies that it shouldn’t be recording.

When you were skating in the street and placed the lens on it, it seems to be what impacts the audio. Just my 3 cents. Maybe it blocks the mic?

Used a cheap wide angle for iPhone 7 off amazon and it covered the mic. Audio was useless and lens distortion was alive and well. Want to get a moment lens set up but can’t justify the price just yet.

max berger You should look into RhinoShield. They have a similar setup to Moment, with a case and lenses you can screw on. Their most expensive wide angle HD is about $60,- and the "Mod case" is $30,- and looks pretty good. I haven't seen or read any reviews about the quality of the lenses, though. Still waiting on those before ordering them.

Sam Sheffer I found only a few samples so far, but I'm quite certain that the bad hissing audio and the noise suppression artifacts are an issue of the 2 XL, not of the Pixel 2? Sounds like the Moment case is affecting the Pixel 2's mic somehow and if I had to take a wild guess, it's being covered up somehow. Notice how when in the case the only sounded good when you were close to the camera and the moments (no pun intended) when you were switching lenses. Lastly, obviously when you had no case on the Pixel, the audio sounded great. This video doesn't deter me from the Pixel but sadly it does for the Moment case. Hopefully Moment will look into this as I was seriously contemplating getting a Moment case and a couple of lenses along with my Pixel 2.

As someone who does location sound for a living, no phone OR camera will ever come with the necessary capabilities to capture clean audio in a standalone set up. Audio capture is a totally different beast and even with a rode mic you can't expect much better. Best bet isn't pickup a zoom recorder/preamp with xlr input and a lavaliere and sync sound in post.

Sam, take off the trucks and wheels. You don't need them to learn how to land most flip tricks. Instead place the deck on a flat surface, practice the kicking motion, and get comfy hovering above the board. Once you've landed a few without the trucks and wheels go ahead and put them back on. You shouldn't have as many issues landing them then. I think its partly a psychological thing. You've got a spinning object whipping around beneath you with metal and shit on it. Whereas with a bare deck its just a piece of wood. If it hits your legs it doesn't hurt as badly, its less likely to pop up real dramatically, etc. From a technical perfective removing the trucks forces you to focus on the core mechanics of the trick. There's not much difference from attempting the trick stationary on your board and moving. TL;DR: Divide and conquer.

Cool Video you want to lean over the board when you 360 F, and I saw you step side ways when you land on top of the board. Stepping side ways will not work and you will never land parallel with your board. These 2 tips might help 👍🏻

Hey Sam, ok the audio was weird, some out of phase and in phase moment while you turn it on your hand, BUT what does it happen when you put an eq on editing? It sounds to me that there are too much of 2k to 10k hertz, maybe smooth it down makes the trick?

I think sometimes when you are on the street and filming, you covered the microphone so that's why it sounds so bad. Go check it out about this (I believe on reddit), someone said about this... after you'll find the position and you'll know where it is (to not cover it) it should should better. Just compare it with the sound you have at 9:30, for example... totally different.

Great video. The audio is definitely poo on both of these phones in or out of the case. I'm definitely not a content creator, but this is a big downside to such an expensive device. Smartphones released in 2017, or more specifically late 2017, are such a mixed bag of compromises.

I've been following this audio issue a bit, and from what I can hear, it is way more of a problem with the Pixel 2XL than the smaller Pixel 2. Although the smaller Pixel 2 sounds a bit muffled, it is not plagued with the incredibly irritating high frequency sibilance of it's bigger brother the 2XL. It's too bad, Sam didn't label which phone the video was coming from.

Google should really fix the audio on the Pixel 2 XL. It sounds like they have a strong emphasis on the high-frequencies. They should put a low-pass filter on it, that should fix that horrible high frequency fizz in the sound. This is easily the worst sounding phone microphone on any current phone. A shame, with the otherwise good video quality.

I thought the MIC was trash even in the very first video you did. I also watched a camera comparison between this and iphone and it was the same thing. It actually was worse than the iphone that usually is bad compared to samsung. So I don't think it's the case and it's not just your device.

Mic's pretty quiet, you didnt feel like levelling that audio out? I got the S8. I have a Rhodes Mic I got for my previous phone and dont need it because the mic is so much better on my S8 :) but yeah the note 8 is the best at the moment :) But your footage is freaking steady thanks to DJI I am jealous of that :)
