[GOOGLE PIXEL 6A REVIEW]
If you subscribe to MrMobile, you probably already know that the Pixel 6a is a mid-range version of a well-received smartphone from one of the biggest companies on the planet. But in the week since most reviewers rendered their verdicts, it’s become more than that: now it’s the focal point of a debate about what really matters in smartphones. How you feel about a product will always depend on your particular priorities, but that’s never been more true than it is with this new phone, which is fantastic (as long as you take it for what it is). I’m Michael Fisher and if what you want is a review that doesn’t harp on screen refresh rates for a midrange phone - you may find this video “refreshing” as well. Join me for MrMobile’s Google Pixel 6a Review!

I was deciding wether or not to trader hers in or urge her to do so. I decided to not. I actually didn't trade in my 5a for the 6a. I sold my 5a (which if gotten used). (I traded my 4a because the battery life on the 4a was shot and it made more sense to trade it in rather than buy a new battery.) it has a better battery than my 2 yr old 4a. But is it worth upgrading from the 5a? No. My wife's 5a beats my 6a in that department.

Love the Pixel 6 (non-A) except the screen would never have the right brightness setting. Like the ambient sensor was inaccurate. I had to constantly adjust the brightness. If it weren’t for this one problem, I’d have kept the phone. Yes, this was after months of software updates from Google. If it weren’t for the screen it was the best smartphone.

Mr. Mobile how is the reception? If you didn't know, the Google Tensor chip used in the Pixel 6 Pro, 6, and 6a has the 5123b modem made by Samsung. This is a problem because reports and reviews of the 6 Pro and 6 say that reception is bad with loss of signal, dropped signals, and trouble with finding networks. As this is a phone... this should be a very important topic that everyone should talking about, but almost no one is...

The fingerprint scanner on my Pixel 6 Pro seems to be working quite well and is reasonably quick. Sure, there are times I wish it was an ultrasonic scanner in the screen or a capacitive scanner on the back like the old Pixels but it's very serviceable so I'm sure they can patch it up on all models some more. I would like to see them implement facial recognition on the Pixel lineup but that requires better front facing cameras. It would have been nice if they gave the 6a a 90Hz panel and kept the mid-range stuff for the price of an iPhone SE 2022.

That's the most balanced review I have seen so far, even though I have decided to wait for the Pixel 7 anyway. It also comes down to what you are currently using, as to what features you cannot compromise on. For me on my Pixel 5, it is too much of a downgrade to a 6a for the features I enjoy, e.g., I cannot lose wireless charging plus I like the small form factor. And I already enjoy all the smart Google AI stuff on my current Pixel 5 like call screening. So lets see whether Pixel 7 can convince me it is a worthy upgrade.

The 6a is essentially a downgraded 5. Worse battery, no headphone jack, no wireless charging, same camera. I'd go 6 or 6pro as you can likely find a good deal out there and you get the new camera hardware. The value proposition for the 6a just isn't there.

I joined the Pixel family through the Pixel 3a and have loved it since. A lot of great features for a great price. This time around I upgraded from the 4a to the 6a and have been playing with it the past day or so. While I'm pleased with it overall, my gripe with it is the in-screen fingerprint scanner. The one on the 4a was so fast and accurate, it didn't feel like a scan, it felt like a button. Now I have to press and hold, and while waiting a second is not a long time, it feels like it's a long time compared to instantaneous. In my opinion, this is one of the only - yet biggest - drawbacks from upgrading from the 4a. Hopefully they can improve the performance with software updates, but I'm doubtful.
@curiousabout1

Agreed, my first Pixel was the 4a, and it was perfection. I got the 6a because it was so inexpensive on sale, has a faster chip, wide camera, IP rating, and extra years of updates. I decided ahead that I'll likely trade it for the 7a so I don't mind missing the smaller size (really adored that though) and superior fingerprint reader. I do think I'll get used to the size and will probably like it more, the more I use it. If not, I only have a year to wait lol.

We're talking mobile devices here and since they rely on that sweet sweet battery juice, it means you can use your device for a longer period of time using the 60Hz screen refresh rate instead of 90Hz and above. I'm definitely willing to sacrifice the smoothness over longevity on a single charge. Actually, This is exactly what I do, because my phone supports 120Hz, but locking the refresh rate to 60Hz has made much more sense.

I am definitely "in the camp" of those who make no fuss about screen refresh. My current phone, Zenfone 8 has a screen refresh of up to 120Hz, with options of "auto", 60, 90, and 120 fixed. But what I am currently using is 60Hz fixed, less strain on the battery, and while I was using 120, 90, and "auto", I noticed that some of my regularly used Apps shuddered, which didn't happen on 60Hz. So that was a no-brainer, so to speak.

Hardware shortfalls? Do you mean the refresh rate ? Wireless charging or what? And what other phones would you compare it to? The phone is nicely balanced for the price.
